I believe it will be same, we lose 2 avg at best guards. the only problem is C Williams has a bigger upside but has not played enough to say it will be better or drop off. Only wish he would have got Ellingsons minutes sooner in the year. 70% of the games we played with 2 1/2 players on the court that could score. Woody and Mike G were no threat to score consistently. How many open looks do you see other teams guards give up like Mike. Love the kids hustle and heart. Woody got to a point this season were he would not put back a missed shot back in under basket. Minus last second against Temple. The other 1/2 player that scores SAP can drive to the hoop and shoot 3's some times not consistent. I don't know much about new players but if a guard can come in and slash to hoop and get other teams to double that would be a big plus.

I think no one will recognize Iowa next season. It will similar to the season after Brunner, Horner and company left. It took us a while to adjust and see the new players. I think Fran has some of the pieces to a good team. I think he is just missing a decent (cartwright type) player at PG. Someone who can handle the ball and break the press and attack and get into the lane. I think if he can find a player such as that, you will see more open jump shots for our shooters. We will have shooters at each position, which will help next year.

We will be more athletic but a lot less experienced. I expect 17 or 18 wins and an NIT bid. I hope for better.

Without looking at a schedule or which teams should be better or worse in the B1G, I think this is pretty fair and close to what I'm expecting. If Williams can step right in and/or they maybe get a 5th year PG or a juco transfer, they could maybe get into the NCAA.

Worse season, but more hopeful and more upside.

Look, this team and these seniors were great, but the ceiling was capped, and I think most of us are ready to move on.

Yes, next year we will completely stink barring Fran not going out and bringing in 2 more playmakers (1 at PG).

But, we will get glimpse's of the future, and that should be encouraging.

Looking around the league, the teams at the top are losing a lot.

MSU - Valentine, Costello, Forbes
Purdue - Hammons, Davis
Maryland - Sulaimon, Layman, Maybe Stone and Trimble
Indiana - Yogi (thank god), Bielfedt, Zeisloft, Maybe Bryant
Iowa - Woody, JU, Gesell, Sapp

Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan lose basically no one from the teams they had this year. Nebraska and Illinois should take a step forward and compete for the top half of the league.

The B1G next year is going to be a toss up, with a lot of young teams. Basically all the best players in the league were seniors this year. Iowa will compete, at this point I would set the O/U at 9.5 conference wins.

I don't think Tremble leaves, he did not have a great year.

MSU- They will reload and their returning players will be good
Purdue- They will lose Hammons and what about Swanigan? Possible Pro?
Maryland- I agree they lose a lot and I think they will be hit the hardest
Indiana- They will lose their PG, but Crean will have another one waiting in the wings
Iowa- Loses a TON, 4 starters will be hard to replace.
Wisky- Will be towards the top again next year. WOW they return a lot
OSU- Another team that doesn't lose anyone, should be toward the top

Could be an interesting year!

As for next year, probably outside looking in as far as the NCAA tourney.
The seniors leaving had their ceiling, but they also achieved at a good(though not great) level.

Despite the weird trajectory of this season, I expect next year to be more uneven game to game. Hopefully, we won't see the ugly pattern of late season collapses repeating.

18 wins (+/- 2) sounds about right.

Hijacking the thread here, but who were the main guys for the team after those guys left? Was that like Justin Johnson and Cyrus Tate?

I am actually cautiously optimistic about next year. I feel like the the youth will provide plenty of ups and downs and games where we all collectively scratch our heads. I expect wins over teams better and losses to teams worse, but the trend of losing down the stretch is one area I have confidence we will improve. One major difference in an inexperienced team vs a veteran team should be learning and growing throughout the season. This years group showed us their best about 2 months early. I would expect next years team to show us their best in March, even if that best is a level below this year's.

Worse. We'll struggle to find identity, and definitely struggle with finding effective combinations of players, partly because of inexperience and partly because our best combination of players won't every stay on the floor at the same time for more than 8 minutes/game. Just a hunch.

Next year will be an adventure, that's for sure. Record definitely will be worse. Might reach NIT if we play well. I worry about guards. I just don't see Williams, but I hope I am wrong. Played at a very small school in Illinois, like our 1A- 2A. We've had a lot of guards go through the ranks in Iowa that we passed on that I thought were much better, but who knows. I think Bohannon or maybe one of the vets will be better. We may lose a player or two to transfer, which may make things even more interesting. A year for the dedicated Hawk fan.

We lost an All-American and only have one shooter, Jok. Defense will be improved because this group was awful. Offensively, will be worse, but hopefully will peak more towards end of season unlike this past year's group.

It's to early to say what next year will look like.

I can't ever remember so many new pieces all at the same time.

Love what I've seen on video of Moss, Hutton, Cook, and what little we saw this year from Williams, Wagner, Baer and Jones.

I expect it will take half the season just for rolls to get figured out but this should be the most athletic team we've seen since Ravelings recruits.

Most likely an NIT team but could be really good the following year.

Confidence Suter, confidence. He have 10 guys returning, who come December 2016 will have played together for over a year & a half. TEN. That is not a bare cupboard. It's a Baer cupboard and it is very much something to grow on.

We will have much more energy coming off the bench. Jones, Baer, Hutton, Fleming and others have those personalities. Williams has shown flashes, plays good defense and is someone who can take it to the rim, or hit from outside. They say the same thing about Moss. We have been missing that.

Some say we will miss the height in the middle. But we need to keep in mind we are bringing in two 6-6 guys in place of two 6'-1" guys. Plus adding three players that are 240+ lbs. It will be a different team for sure. But not lacking depth, athleticism, length and talent.

Give them time to mesh and we should have a good product... Scheduling will be huge. We need to eliminate the 250+ RPI teams and pick up several 125-175 ranked teams in the non-conference. And stay away from the higher ranked teams. We will have enough of that in the B1G. That will be the key to getting to the NCAAs. This year's schedule we had wouldn't work.

What to Skinny on Hutton and Moss ? and info about their skills we need scorers.

We will start worse and finish better. When the team clicks will determine whether we are a bubble team. I think Jok is an All American who scores 20 plus a game and I really like the leadership Baer brings. Uhl has potential to improve like Jok did this year. I have a hard time believing Williams isn't an improvement at point, although he no doubt will have moments. More athleticism, better defense and rebounding. Fran had far less talent his first 3 years.

I remember hearing that Moss' game was ahead of Williams. That was about a month ago and do not remember the source... All I have heard about on Hutton is good defense and a Dunk posted by Jok. Nothing much, but I'd love to hear some insider info...

Some good questions that Tom Kakert, or Morehouse or Harty or whoever has access, can interview Jok or Clemmons or another elder; Who are the top 2 or 3 new players in practice? Who do they see as the top 3 players with the most potential? And what do each bring to the table for skills and abilities?

Now that season is over they can elaborate more. Especially the seniors. Would like to hear the perspective from all the seniors on the future players for the Hawks.

Sorry, didn't read all the replies, so sorry if someone already came up with this: I expect that next year's team will not win as many as this year (maybe 16-17 wins), but will actually be a better team than this year by March, and could make an NIT run like in '13.

Next year's team - I think more athletic from everything I've been reading, and seeing. Talentwise, probably no real drop off, maybe an improvement if you're talking raw physical ability but am not real familiar with the incoming class's skill sets... But, they will be a whole lot less experienced. Next year's team will be young, no two ways about it.

I'm going to say somewhere in the mid to upper teens in wins, NIT seems most likely, and I would view an NCAA bid as gravy. This is just on the surface of course.. It depends on HOW we get to where we end up. If the team ends up in the NIT, but are coming on strong late in the year, we can probably all feel encouraged for the future. It's always easier to evaluate how you feel about a season after it's over and you saw how everything unfolded.

I'm thinking/hoping 2017/18 is the year this group is more likely to impress folks, with an added year of experience. Next year will have some bumps.. Maybe many.

Seems like a good plan to me regarding scheduling. You don't have to play murderer's row, but avoid the RPI killers (300+). Just a lot of winnable games to help the team build some confidence instead of having them get murdered every game in December.. The conference slate will be challenging enough by default, and there'll be enough opportunity for good wins.

Agree. I think we can possibly beat UNI at Wells, and ISU in Carver. If the league lines Iowa up with a lower level foe in the ACC challenge....Iowa could go 10-3 in the non-conference.
Get a good league slate and get to 9-9 and Hawks could be bubbly.....best case for next year...would be a great surprise.

My bro-in-law is a principal in Decatur, Il. He's watched Williams play in HS and said we were getting a hell of a player. My bro-in-law played PF in college. I trust his judgement on Williams. Let the kid get acclimated.

Wisky returns Brunsan and Nigel freekin Hayes? Aren't those guys like 30 by now?

I worry less about experience in basketball than I do in football. These kids have played in hundreds of games. They played in officiated games in front of fans starting at, what age 6?

Of course, big adjustment - new players, new surroundings, elevated competition. But, I think they will catch up quickly.

Do they get an overseas trip this summer? That would be huge.

Don't they pair you up with a team in the same position as you in the previous year standings? So Iowa was 5th they will get the 5th place team in the ACC?? Its looking like Duke or ND, but I am sure there is a little lee way with those match-ups. I thought that is how they did it, but maybe not.

I am thinking this team will have its ups and downs. I think personally we will be between 16-20 wins and more than likely a NIT or Bubble team. Its all going to depend on the Big 10 slate and if we can take advantage. If get a schedule like Indiana did this year, I think we could do quite well. If we get a schedule like we did this year, it could be tough.

Fran is building at Iowa what he did at Siena, next year is the first year it'll happen if Jok stays. A starting line-up that is all 6ft6 to 6ft8 and athletic. Next year is the year we can see what he's been recruiting for and find out if it was worth it.

That is exactly it. These guys will have been playing "together" for a year & a half by the time next year starts. They will be the type of players that Fran wants for his system, for the first time at Iowa. The experience could be further along. But this is what he has wanted from day one. Now that the seniors are gone, his system can be implemented in full, or darn close to it. I have been ready for the 2016/2017 season to start for months....

No overseas trip this year. I believe the NCAA limits it to every 4 years, unfortunately. And Fran took Gabe home a couple years ago. So we are two years out. Next time will be for Uhl to go to Germany his senior year. That would be sweet if he could pull that off again.
