NFL Viewership Down 9.7% in 2017

I have a feeling that's a low ball estimate at 9.7%. I haven't watched one single down this year...and I haven't missed it at all. The sad thing is I grew up watching teams in the 80s. Oh damn well.

There was talk to start the year they were going to figure ratings differently this year to account for multiple people watching in sports bars. They expected a ratings bump due to this change so this number may be worse than the 9.7% reported. Haven't heard anything about it with the lower numbers.

I can still watch the team that I like, Go Vikes!

But I can’t really stand to watch any other 2 random teams play.

Yeah, I don't know what everyone here is talking about. Probably Cleveland Browns fans. ;-) As far as I can tell, this is the greatest season in the NFL since at least 2009 (hopefully this year ends better than that year did, though).

NFL sux. Those ridiculous celebrations they do now just bring them that much closer to pro wrestling. Probably the only thing I watch anymore is the Superbowl.

I am a devout 49er fan, but cancelled my NFL Sunday ticket last season when Kap started kneeling. This year, I have the sunday ticket, and watched every Niner game that CJ played, but since Jimmy G took over, haven't watched a lick. As long as the NFL is going to tolerate anthem kneelers, I am out. Of course, now that I have been out and really have no more interest, I think there is a good chance they lost my viewing for good. I used to watch baseball, all the Cubs games on WGN back in the day, until the rich pricks thought they needed to strike, and after that, with the exception of the Cubs world series last season, haven't watched a game. They will soon figure out that it's not wise to bite the hand that feeds them because the viewers bite back. ;)

I watched the NFL for 45 years. I've been losing interest for the last 10, mostly because it's boring. This season drove a stake in it. The same thing happened with the NBA first, then MLB, and I've never even considered going back to those. I'm basically down to some Big Ten football, and anything hockey related.

The NFL is awesome. Can't wait for playoffs on Saturday and Sunday. People boycotting the league because of protests are fvcking weird, and the product is just fine.
Ya, when you put on the uniform and represent the team, and then you protest, you are a distraction to the team, and make it about you, and not the team. As Bo Schembechler said, there is nothing more important than "The Team, The Team, The Team". :)

If a player wants to protest, fine, do it on your own time. Example, you're a spectator at some sporting event or concert, take a knee there. How's that sound? :)

NFL owners and coaches don't like distractions. I don't blame them.

Yeah, I don't care about any of that. I like really good football and the NFL provides it for me. I love America and our freedoms, but I wouldn't care if someone took a shit on the flag at the 50 yard line before the game as long as I still get to watch the game.

Ya, you one of those new fangled "millenials" or something? lol

I’ve watched a total of 1.5 games maybe when I used to watch a ton of NFL football. I continue to watch a ton of college football except the SEC. I refuse to support the SEC and ESPN whenever possible.

The NFL product is very boring compared to the college game and the anthem protest definitely sticks a fork in it for me. There’s a complete lack of respect for the fans as they are essentially protesting many of their own fans who are average joes and hard working people trying to eek out a living while they are paid to play a game. The disrespect for our country, military and our police force is untolerable. Their stance is also not supported by data.

Like someone else said I do support and am proud of the Iowa Hawks in the NFL and try to check up on them from a distance (highlights, stats, etc.).

What would I stand for? Although I think it's stupid they kneeled, the right to do so is what makes America great. We can do shit like that, right or wrong, without getting our head cut off.

You are right, they are "standing" for something and while I too disagree with what they are doing it is one of the greatest liberties in the world that they can speak put. My thing was with someone shitting on the flag. Ill bet those protesters wouldn't even be ok with that. (If they understood it was said flag that gave them such liberties.)

Ya, economics will sort this type of disrespectful behavior out by next year. Either written into player's contracts, or league enforcement. Beauty of capitalism lol

LIke I said, if you want to protest, no problem, just do it on your own time lol

That was simply hyperbole.

Yep. I love the nfl. Also. I don’t thin’ the viewership is as bad as this makes it sound. I spend most of my time watching the red zone. The red zone is not used in these numbers. We will see what the ratings are during the playoffs. NFL is doing just fine.

Also. Many people are streaming now. This is also not accounted for in ratings.

And, we hate to point out the fact that the nfl had 37 out of 50 highest viewership last year. Yeah, the nfl is really struggling.

I couldn’t tell you 3 people that kneeled this last weekend. Why, you ask? Because I don’t give a f***. Why would I? That is the beauty of living in America. You have that right. Just Give me some good football.

I don’t support Kap by any means, but there are so many quality individuals who play as compared to those who kneel or sit that it is hard for me to blackball the league. Take Marshall Yanda. Dude ain’t gonna kneel for anyone and has submitted his body and brain health to the game because he loves it. It’s his passion.

The game that we all love and are currently on this board talking about is in jeopardy because of the actions of a few. If there is not a league that pays a high premium to those who jeopardize their lives to play, the college game willl be gone as well.

I already think those who play in the league are a little crazy for not dedicating themselves to Baseball or Basketball, more money in both of those sports for the individuals (guaranteed at least).

Agree that we need to see some changes from the NFL, but what is the right and just answer? Have the league suspend players who kneel, sit, or raise a fist? In my opinion, that is Gestapo sh*t. We have the right to peaceful protest, even if they carry repricussions. Let them do what they believe is just.

That said, your popularity means everything in a league where you are paid millions of dollars on the value of your ticket and jersey sales. If a franchise sees your individual actions as detrimental to their business, they can and should have the right to cut you. I applaud Jerry J. for this very thing and the statements he has made.

And yes, I know Kap sold more jerseys in ‘15 or ‘16 than anyone else, but he still is blackballed, which should appease some of you. Every action has an equal and often opposite reaction. Choose your path wisely as a millionaire with a great degree of visibility. Hope it was worth it, Kap & others.

The NFL is far superior to college guys. It’s a level playing field unlike college, and you know only the cream of the crop makes it to that level. I find it weird that people actually take pleasure in the NFL being down in the ratings. You guys realize without the NFL, the college game would suffer immensely.
