NFL Viewership Down 9.7% in 2017

Disagree with you on this totally. Protesting the flag is total disrespect whether you think so or not. You can disagree with how the country is going and what you want to see changed. Do it and then back it up with actions like joining in some solutions for change. Respect for those that put it on the line is a good start in being positive not the crap on the flag that we see now. Do we have problems? Yes we do but these NFL players doing this then saying the fans can go to hell if they don't like it, well most of us say screw you. And if you don't really think viewership is down no matter the format you are totally mistaken.
Here is the most perplexing thing to me about this situation. There are those that find the protests disrespectful to our country, our flag and our military personnel. Yet support someone who thinks a soldier who was captured is not a war hero. And more importantly for my family, disrespects a Gold Star family.

It’s hard to think clearly and be logical when your just one big ball of emotions and people are trying to make you mad and disrespecting you .. just ask my wife.. It’s a real thing!

I don't know any of you personally, but the people that I do, that are anti NFL because some players kneel - white players, black players, good guys and undoubtedly some that probably aren't always good guys - are some of the most shallow, simple minded people I know.

They include high school friends I knew well for a brief period a long time ago, in-laws, people at our place of employment. The constant is they are mostly incapable of understanding or caring why some players kneel, they think it's an jab at our military, and often there are racist overtures even though players of different races kneel and stand.

I've also learned no one can get them to understand it's not a jab at America or the military no matter how many quotes, pictures, etc are supplied as examples to the contray.

I have many friends that served our country - and this small sample group all loves the NFL and they still watch, except for one nephew. Unfortunately my nephew is a dumba$$, and has nothing to do with the kneeling issue - he's been a dumb a$$ his whole life, with many horrible decisions detrimental to others. All vets I know, but the nephew, support the kneelers position, and what they are doing it for.

That said, my viewing patterns haven't changed. For the past many years I typically have games on if at home, but usually doing many other things, watching bits and parts of many, but very few full games throughout a year. I typically don't know who is playing until the game comes on.

for those that use to love it, but now don't watch because of this, I feel sorry you are missing out on something you they use to like, because someone seduced you into thinking its something it isn't.

If anyone disagrees with this - good for you.

My biggest issue in all of this is not that they are kneeling. It's that they don't really believe in the cause. Why are some players kneeling some weeks and not others? Why do we have 200 players kneeling one week, but you haven't even noticed anybody kneeling the last handful of weeks?

The people I know that REALLY care about a cause, don't do it for one week and not the next. They devote as much time as they can to raise awareness to what they stand for.

I don't feel the least bit sorry for Kaepernick. Once he put on the socks with pigs wearing a police hat, he devalued his message. Maybe he should go protect and serve now that he's got free time on his hands.

From Nate Boyer, a Green Beret and former NFL player who spoke with Kaepernick about his protest:

We sorta came to a middle ground where he would take a knee alongside his teammate. Soldiers take a knee in front of a fallen brother’s grave, you know, to show respect. When we’re on a patrol, you know, and we go into a security halt, we take a knee, and we pull security.
but guess what? when you take a knee for a fallen soldier, that is showing love and respect.

I am not going to change anyone's opinion and that is fine. What I do know is that over 50% of Americans are not happy with the player protests that involve the flag, anthem and soldiers.

And like I said, I feel strongly that the players and owners are a bunch of idiots to involve the anthem, flag and soldiers when trying to bring attention to an issue. INSTEAD, they could have used all their money, popularity, influence and power to make a difference AND not piss off half the country.

Seriously, how stupid are these millionaires and billionaires? Colin Kapernick was so stupid and did not think things thru to the extent that no one will hire him.

For me, it started with ESPiN. When they decided to get political I said FU and haven't watched in 4 or 5 years. No College Gameday, no games, nothing.
Then Trump gets elected and the left act like little biatches over everything he does. So when the NFL started their antics, I said FU to them. And Hollywood? FK them pieces of trash.
If I want to hear politics, I'll watch the news.

While voting for and supporting trump it's undeniably the he has said and done some pretty stupid crap. The things you have mentioned are a couple of them. I'm still not sure what the deal was with the gold star family. I still believe he has America's interests first and loves the vets and this country.

Good rule of business: do not insult your customers.
LOVE this.

yes and about as smart as a company openly declaring their political prejudice/alliance. Only costs a company 50%*/- of the possible market for it's product. Pure genius!

"It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier." That is Trump's quote about avoiding the Vietnam War and being able to avoid sexually transmitted diseases while chasing women.

My parents were Gold Star parents. They lost one of their sons in that war.

I respect your right to support any type of "moral values" you align with. My brother died for you to have that right.

Herschel Walker??? Nothing against him personally, but that guy single-handedly led to three Dallas Cowboys Super Bowls and set the Vikings back about six or seven years. That was a horrible front office decision and it changed the landscape of the NFL in the worst possible way. If I never hear that name again it will be too soon. Ugh. Herschel Walker. He would have been a great NFL running back in the early 1970s. 1989? Just ... no. No, no, no, no, no.
GREATEST TRADE EVER!!! :D

It is disgusting what the NFL players are doing. I have not watched any NFL games for years but every year had some friends over for a Super Bowl party. Not this year. I will stick with college football.
no super bowl for me either!
i'd watch the secfp before i watch that!

I want to thank your brother for giving his life for our freedom. And feel bad for your parents and you for losing their son and your brother.

I never really liked trump from the beginning and preferred others over him. I think many including me voted more against Hilary and their corrupt political machine and we were willing to vote for anyone but her.

We all are sinners including trump. One of his biggest problems is talking before he thinks. That being said, i have no regrets that he's in there over Hilary.

The NFL is awesome. Can't wait for playoffs on Saturday and Sunday. People boycotting the league because of protests are fvcking weird, and the product is just fine.
No, it's the protests that are fvucking wierd. The people are just fine.

I understand and agree. Both choices were unacceptable for me. I wrote in John Kasich.

Anthem kneeling complainers are funny. They claim to love the country, yet shit on its most basic principles. They whine about kneeling, yet say nary a word about the rigged economic system and the ever-increasing gap in wealth and basic rights. Comical really.

You can do and basically make as much money as you wish as long as you are willing to work your butt off. The majority of the complainers that don't have anything are too lazy to work for it and want everything given to them. That's what's comical

Broad generalizations aren't good on either side. Of course those kneeling have a right to do so. Fans also have a right to not follow a team or watch games if they don't like the kneeling. Am I allowed to believe that players have the right to kneel, while still wishing that they didn't?My opinion is that the kneeling shows a glaring lack of respect toward the country and those who serve and have served. I realize not others share my opinion. But if I am not supposed to question the motives of the kneelers, shouldn't those who disagree with the kneeling be shown the same benefit of the doubt?

The problem I've seen consistently with those that disagree with the kneeling is that they are not willing to listen to the other side, i.e. "they are wrong, no ands, ifs, or buts". That makes it hard to have any kind of a discussion. I'm in the camp that understands the kneeling, and respects their right to do it, but wish they would find a different way to protest. Not saying you fall into this category, just an observation I've made.

Cord cutting, cost cutting, and not getting to see the games I want to see have driven me to online streaming less than legal ways. I’m sure I’m not alone.

Kapernick is a tool, period. Hope the NFL takes another big viewership again next year. This is from a guy who tried to never miss a game. Haven’t watched in two years and have survived fine. Great way to spend some quality time with my wife.

I don't feel sorry for Kaepernick either. He's a grown man, went into this with his eyes pretty wide-open.

As for your question, I believe more are just staying in the lockeroom. Also, I'm not a partisan person, but the president has a few larger issues on his plate and has quit fanning the flames...another reason the 'story' is dying.

I have a question of my own - for the anti-kneelers - when the anthem is played, and showed on TV how many of you stand? How many of you sit on your fanny and keep swigging beer?

Agree, I don't want to pay for Sunday Ticket so when my team isn't on national TV (They aren't on TV 12-13 weeks out of the year), I stream the games.

If I am AT the game you bet your ass that this ass isn't gonna be in a seat!
No I do not stand at home....

Is there nothing you do at home you wouldn't do in front of millions of people?

No doubt the NFL is having trouble, but those numbers don’t reflect the uptick in streaming. I think they’re going to survive, but we might not see the increase in salary cap that we were anticipating
I tend to agree, ratings are harder and harder to calculate. Butts in seats remains easy to calculate though, I wonder what that looks like?

Regarding streaming, I wonder how many tune in weekly via Reddit or other "free"/shady streams out there? I'm willing to bet that's increased significantly in recent years.
