North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum was injured while playing basketball and taken to a Milwaukee emergency room on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and USA TODAY have learned.

"Gov. Burgum sustained an injury while playing a pick-up game of basketball with campaign staff," Mike Nowatzki, communications director for governor's office told USA TODAY, referring other questions to the campaign.

It was not clear whether Burgum, 67, would be able to participate in the first Republican debate Wednesday night.

CNN first reported the injury.

Burgum is among the eight candidates that qualified by the deadline to be on stage. Former President Donald Trump is skipping the debate and has indicated he will hold a competing event instead.

I've said it before, and this is a big compliment for me to a Republican, Burgum isn't crazy. He panders slightly to the crazies, but he'd probably be an effective president. He's doomed in the GOP primary field, though.
I actually agree, there is him and one other that I saw their commercials and thought “hmm….dude almost sounds reasonable….I could support him” and then cracked up laughing because I knew that automatically disqualified him….he’s just a dumb RINO.

Curious how badly he was injured.

Playing a basketball game with his staff makes him seem oddly relatable.

Yeah, he's sane and relatively moderate, but still supports horrible Republican policies on climate change and the environment, and repeats wingnut lies about Biden. He's not as bad as Nikki Haley and her China obsession though.

For me, I don't know enough about Burgum to seriously weigh in on him...but...to me...our big problem in this country is that our winnowing process actually effectively sidelines "normal" people like this way too early.

I accept your opinion that he is not crazy...unfortunately though, he will be an "also ran" and not generate enough momentum to seriously challenge for the nomination. Aaaarrrgghhh.

Meanwhile, big personalities will likely carry the day.

No matter how moderate some of these GQP types pretend to be, every one of them will appoint extreme far right Federalist Society judges. This includes the billionaire from the Dakotas.

I used the $20 gift card he sent me last weekend. It came in handy. As someone that played pickup basketball well into my 50's, he should not be doing anything other than shooting buckets at 67.

The problem with a Republican President is what we experienced with Turd...SCOTUS appointments.

Merica can't afford more of that.

I completely agree and so does my left knee.

It calls into question his level of common sense.

I believe he signed an extreme abortion ban - 6 weeks IIRC. That’s crazy for all the reasons previously discussed in this forum.

I have met him. Nice guy but he has zero chance to win. Too small a state

Living in North Dakota can do that to you, though. He does gave a couple of really “fringe” ideas on how things work.

It isn't what I want, but I don't know if he fully supports that, did it because he needs the cred for the primary, or did it because the ND legislature was going to pass it right over a veto. I'm a Dem, but I'll always remember that Bill Clinton let the execution of a mentally handicapped man go through because he needed the cred to protect his flanks.
Burgum has expressed openness to the LGBTQ community, and understands America needs immigrants. North Dakota has a burgeoning immigrant population in Fargo and Grand Forks as I understand it. He understands we need laborers, and skilled workers.
I do not think he gets green energy enough, and the supposed economic miracle in North Dakota does not translate to the rest of the country. Green energy is happening whether a President Burgum, or any other Republican replaces Biden. But, as I said, he seems competent. And, in the low bar for Republicans, he seems like a guy who wouldn't stage a coup if he loses in 2028.
