Stanford ranked 6 spots higher despite having the same record and Northwestern having the head-to-head win.

It's because they feel that Stanford has better wins than NW.
In the scheme of things I dont think Stanford is very tough and think they deserve to be ranked behind NW.

But...but...but...Stanford had to play really early in the morning (Pacific time) and therefore we should discard the results against Northwestern.

Sincerely,

Everyone who tries to explain why they lost and Iowa killed NW.

I wonder if it has something to do with Ty Willingham (though a former Spartan QB) coached at Stanford, and Condi Rice also going to school at Stanford being on the committee.
Could be a little of this. Which by the way I never understood the notion that Osborne and Alvarez are in there thumping their chest for Iowa? That directly impacts their jobs and their schools. I'm not saying they dislike/favor anyone but I highly doubt they are going out of their way to push Iowa surpremecy..

They are humans, therefore they do have agenda's & biases, whether they think they do or not.

Part of the reason is HOW Northwestern lost. Although they lost to good teams, they lost by 38 to Michigan and 30 to Iowa. Stanford has lost by 10 and 2 point. Not being competitive to good teams is why Stanford is ahead of them.

Northwestern is fighting the same, or worse, preconceived notion that the Hawks are .... "It's NW. How can they be really good?". Then you go watch them, and you say, "See, not that good".

When you are expected to be good, and appear to be good, excuses are made on your behalf for losses. When you are not expected to be good, and don't look that good, excuses are made for your wins.

Which of course doesn't explain that NW beat Stanford.
