Nunge

I had high hopes Nunge was going to use his extra 25 pounds to be a more physical player inside. Doesn't appear that is going to happen and that's probably OK given Garza and Kriener are better equipped for that role this year. I don't care how Nunge gets his 8-10 as long as he gets them. Nice to see him get a little swagger back last night vs. hanging his head in frustration.

Nunge has late bloomer written all over him. I kind of figured we would see something emerge from the funk we saw from him the first couple of games. I too like physicality and have hopes we will eventually get that from him. His game just seems like a work in progress at this point but happy to see him making a positive contribution and getting comfortable with that mid-range jumper.

Jack needs to move ball quicker at the high post. Had Joey wide open like 5 times and CJF 3 times....Move the ball!

I actually think that's one of the only things he actually does somewhat well. Bottom line remains though that he shouldn't be on the floor for a Big Ten team. You can't teach athleticism, physicality and attitude. He just doesn't have it.

I think Nunge is still too passive and seems to be deferring to Luka, who is being isolated in the middle. I wish Nunge were getting more opportunity around the basket, but because of Luka's offensive skills and Luka's slowness on defense, Nunge spends more time on the perimeter or in the mid-range area. I still believe Nunge will become a very solid contributor, once he becomes more assertive and isn't taking a back seat to Luka.

He's at least shown some improvement making him a reasonable option for minutes, especially if the opponent goes bigger and slower.
Against a smaller perimeter oriented opponent I think he can provide spot minutes at the 5 as needed, but will be in deep trouble trying to defend a good athlete on the perimeter.

Don't totally disagree, but the other main options at 4 (Pemsl and Kriener) are probably even slower on the perimeter. We can play Weezy at 4 in certain match ups, but that isn't going to be frequent in the B1G.

The key is use Nunge's size as a mismatch advantage, but, as long as the interior is almost "reserved" for Luka in the offense they are running, the only size advantage is shooting the 12-15' around the FT line or the high/low pass to Luka from that spot. As the Hawks play in the B1G, more teams will have bigger 4s, and that should at least keep Jack closer to the basket on the defensive end.

I honestly don't know if the kid will ever work out. He was really bad at defending the pick and roll last night and as many here have stated he seems to have slow BB instincts and for a 6'11" he plays/looks really small out there.

Hope he figures it out but he might be one of those cases of a physically well put together player that never reaches his full potential and I think it mainly has to do with how he wants to play, doesn't appear to want to use his size as the advantage it could be.

When it come to Nunge's attitude, I'd like to see less of Dom Uhl and more of Aaron White.

That is a good comparison, sadly though I don't think attitudes at this level change all that much as they are firmly set by this age.

Just to big/slow to defend the perimeter. Not shooting the 3 well. Move him inside...
I think this is the biggest problem that people kind of forget. Everyone's worried about offense. He has shown some troubling perimeter defense.

At least every game this year, including a few times last night, someone will get the ball in the corner, Nunge will stomp out to defend him and overcommit, then the player will pump fake and blow right past Jack. That is a huge problem.

Some writers were billing Nunge as the next Uthoff. He just doesn't have the same feel for the game.

I think the offensive strategy is to get Nunge to knock down a midrange-longrange jumper 3-4 times a game and create the ability to isolate Garza in the post. Fran doesn't want to run Nunge at the 5 when he has two better options in the post in Garza and Kriener. Both of those guys are excellent 1 move post scorers. Nunge has the tools to be bullseye from 10ft out at the 4 which creates the ability to isolate your big weapons in the post. Fran is going to run this and keeping running this until it consistently works or never fully materializes and I don't blame him. Nunge is that x-factor on the team that could open up the entire offense.

I agree that he’ll probably never develop an “in your face, exuding confidence” type of personality, but hopefully he can at least gain the confidence to know what he needs to be doing and to be going 110% all the time. He reminds me a lot of a bigger, but less athletic Jarrod Uthoff tbh

A White was interesting the way he displayed his emotions on the court. Dude had serious attitude but I always thought it was funny when he would throw down a thunderous dunk and just put his head down without much reaction. He almost looked sad sometimes

He did flash some attitude at times.
I remember playing Nebraska and that big oaf Andre Almeida put a hard foul on AW and White got in his face.
That baseline lob dunk from CJ to JW was very Aaron White like! It'd be nice if Nunge had those hops like Aaron!

I think Kreiner is at least as quick as Nunge, just my opinion

He might not be as skilled but he is willing to stick his nose in with the trees, no fear in that kid, I'll give RK credit for that.
He's definitely not afraid of contact. The biggest issue I've seen with him is he tends to bring the ball down and it gets knocked out of his hands pretty frequently

Hes taller, heavier and quicker than Garza.

I don't think the opponent is the problem, it's his own lack balls.

Nunge plays scared like hes a little guy while Garza thinks hes unstoppable.

If you swapped whats in their heads Nunge would be an all conference players.

Compared to some conference's maybe but its still trending away from that overall even in the big.

The guy has gone 14/10, 11/6 the past two games. Whether you think that will translate against better competition is one thing, but at least the past two games he has been one of Iowa’s better players.

I think it's funny how people equate making shots with playing well.

Hes still looked like a major liability out there outside of shooting wide open shots.

Plays timid, weak and slow. Makes bad passes/decisions, get stripped, doesn't hustle back. Isn't in position on defense, doesn't rebound well, doesn't move well in general.

He overall looks lost to me.

Defense aside, Jack has shown some flashes the last two games. I think most fans would be happy with a season full of 11 and 7 efforts from Jack.
