***Official Caitlin/Fever/Kate/Meg Games Mega Thread***

Last season the Fever finished 6th in the league (after 1. New York, 2. Minnesota, 3. Connecticut, 4. Las Vegas, 5. Seattle).

Based on all of the player movement, where would you put the Fever now?

How close are they to making the finals?

Minnesota lost to New York in the Finals last season.

I think they’re up to the 4 spot. Still concerns about what happens when CC is on the bench. And their starting backcourt still has defensive issues. But the new players help shore up those defensive issues to protect the rim better.

But the Liberty, Lynx, and Aces need to be dethroned to move out of the top 3 spots unless they do a tear down like the Sun did.

Next offseason will be interesting. 2/3 of the team’s contracts expire. Bonner, Howard, Cunningham, and Mitchell are all on one year contracts. That’s a relatively young super max, an older veteran max, a close to max that is close to retirement, and a younger veteran likely looking for more money. Plus an overpaid KLS, Lexi looking to get paid, Dantas looking to extend her career, and getting rid of Wallace.

The Fever were very fortunate to get Clark. They realize they cannot afford to plod along and waste their good fortune, so they are going all in. Over the next several years they want to win multiple titles.

Bonner to the Fever is hilarious. When the Sun and Fever played last year, Bonner was not shy with the trash talking and IMO did not appear to like Clark much. This is similar to when a bad guy all of a sudden becomes a good guy in the WWE.

I think anything less than a 30-14 record next season and a spot in the semifinals will be a disappointment. Even a SF loss will be disappointing, but they would likely have to face one of the Liberty, Lynx, and Aces, so it'll be tough.

That’s a lot of movement for the Fever, definitely pushing their chips in.
What do you think? Have they done enough to be seen as the favorites?

So....

Clark
Mithchell
Bonner
Howard
Boston

Or if they want to go a little smaller

Clark
Mitchell
Cunningham
Bonner
Boston

Either way, they will always have 3-4 capable 3-pt shooters on the court. Going to be very hard to double team CC

No Hull?

The new lineup, pending any more moves, is
PG Clark, Berger
SG Mitchell, Cunningham, Hull
SF Bonner, Hull, Cunningham
PF Howard, Bonner, Dontas
C Boston, Dontas, Howard(in a pinch)

Leaves Wallace, Saxton, and KLS watching from the bench.

Gives good flexibility to go small and fast or add some length to provide some defense. Backup Center is still an issue, but they may be able to work around it.

Nothing wrong with appearing to not like an opponent. She had some kind-ish words for Clark. Something about her not being “a typical rookie”. So I think she certainly respects her game. And i doubt she’d sign with the Fever if she truly didn’t like Clark.

And yet, the hits keep coming. Here’s an update from the Sophie/Smith trade. Another player thrown in.

Means they have to get rid of someone as they’ll be at 13 players. Saxton and Berger are unprotected. One of them will be gone unless a two out/one in trade happens.

Not with A'ja and Co. in the way. I sure hope that the Fever come into the season in great shape. Last year was a learning curve in what it takes to play with CC. No reason not to start out fast and furious. And I sure hope they learned how to set/keep screens and how to run off of them.. including CC.

I am shocked and very pleased by the Bonner signing. She can play the 2 and 3, or even the 4 if need be. That 3 spot is pretty jammed up with Cunningham, Bonner, and Hull. Maybe Bonner came to the fever because she is getting older and she can play less minutes in the interest of load management. In any event, I think this is a 30 win team now. What a transformation from a few months ago!

So unless they get rid of someone, the roster is full. No room for a rookie.

Oh wow I did not even see this addition. Yeah, someone has to go now.

Regarding "No Hull?", I just listed the starters. Hull is a quality player, but her minutes are going down next year.

Also, you have Hull listed as a backup SF and Cunningham as backup SG. I think it should be the other way around. Cunningham has 15-20 pounds on Hull, and Cunningham actually has had spot-duty at PF historically.

Based on the trades and signings, I am going to assume that somehow Wallace Berger or KLS are gone. Here is how I see it:

1 Caitlin/Berger/Brown/Wallace
2 Mitchell/Hull/Brown/Wallace
3 Bonner/Cunningham/Hull/KLS
4 Howard/Bonner/KLS/Cunningham/KLS/Saxton
5 Boston/Dantas/Howard/KLS/Saxton

I appreciate the opinions and the thought process behind them. Did Aja and company get better with the Plum trade?

Another upshot of signing Bonner is that we no longer have to worry about her guarding or helping guard Caitlin. IIRC, her length and savvy presented some problems for Caitlin.

It was impressive, she played with what we call pissivity. Is she one of those ‘hate playing against her but love her on my team’ type of players?
Might go see if X has anything or something else I could copy and paste to see if that’s the case.
She didn’t seem dirty but she wasn’t giving an inch at all.

Sounds like when Rodman moved from the Pistons to the Bulls. Hated him. Loved him.

I never thought of her as dirty. The closest thing to dirty on that team was Carrington, although I personally don't think she intended to poke Caitlin in the eye. She just didn't GAF that she did it. In any event, she is a massive addition to the team.

I think KLS goes next, cut or traded. I hope all these new players get to Indy ASAP and get acclimated to the pace at which CC22 plays. It took until the break last year, but once they found their footing, Indy was a tough out.

Race horses need to run. And no more standing CC22 in the corner on offensive sets.

Frankly, I'm not sure how the cuts work with salary caps. I did not think they could just waive Berger, but apparently they could. Similarly, I do not think they can just waive KLS but what in the hell do I know at this point.

Take a look at this page. Unprotected contracts can be cut in the offseason without a cap hit. Boston, Clark, and Saxton are the only unprotected contracts from last year. It isn’t in this site, but Cunningham is also unprotected and could be cut. KLS and Wallace are protected and would have to be traded or retire.

At this point I think they see what they can draft with the #19 pick. Then choose between the pick or Saxton for the 12th spot. Or they draft an overseas player that won’t be coming for at least a year.

Or they have some other move we aren’t expecting.

I had been thinking that Berger would get more playing time next season as CC's backup. Clearly, she was not a part of their plan.

I’m not about to guess what happens next. Well I guess I just did. But I have been very surprised by all of this. Maybe they can get an older vet like Tina Charles to sign on for whatever cap space is left just for a chance at a ring with this group…
