*******Official Cubs 2025 Thread*******

Did you not cheer when he smashed a WizBomb?
He regressed defensively, otherwise he would have been fine. Best wishes to him. Good guy in the clubhouse from all reports.
Yeah a lefty version of him that could play 3B like Wizzy did 3 or so years ago would be great. Especially if they could play 2B and 1B too.

I hope the Mariners paid more than the Cubs did for Festa.

Scott Boras really wants it to be known that the Cubs are kicking the tires on Bregman for a short term deal.
I don’t know how I’d feel about that one. He’s declined offensively. Still good, but the walk rate is down dramatically and I wonder about a right handed hitter like him who might be too used to the Crawford Boxes.
I hate to give up the draft picks and IFA money on a short term deal, too.

I think Scott is working hard to create demand.

So, a guy whom the Cubs thought so high of just 14 month ago that they added him to the 40-man to protect him from the R5D even though he was only in A-ball.....just got dumped for a bag of balls. Didn't realize how strapped for cash this organization was. Meanwhile, we have Festa and at least 2 middle infielders who probably won't ever have an impact on the Major League team there taking up space, waiting to be DFA'd by Spring Training. WTF.

I was told we gave away Bellinger so we could use that freed-up money on a pitcher. Looks like it’s more likely to go towards buying another property in Wrigleyville.

Arias throws 100 mph, but has little to no control. He was close to averaging a walk per inning last season. I can see why the Cubs kept him for a year, and I can see why the Yankees see tantalizing promise in him.

Arias was definitely a guy who could have been at-risk of not sticking on the 40-man, but I was surprised that he went first. Roberts, Hollowell, Festa are certainly at risk and add Merryweather to that list if he’s not right in spring training (no minor league options) and while I think he’ll be ok and could stick all year, Keegan Thomson is out of minor league options, so he becomes a trade candidate as well.

While I’m still surprised that Arias went this early, a lot has changed in the org since they put him on the 40-man. As lucas80 points out, he averaged 8.92 BB/9 last year and maybe the Cubs didn’t like the way things were trending with that. Also, the Cubs have added Tyson Miller, Jack Neely, Gavin Hollowell, Nate Pearson and Eli Morgan to the roster since Arias was added and it may simply be that they didn’t see the big league path for Arias.

I wish him the best, I haven’t caught him live, but I have caught some MiLB games where I got to see him pitch and he’s a fun guy to watch.

Nothing but happy smiles tomorrow at the Cubs Convention.
Really? One year for all the Cubs gave up in the trade. A one year rental. Why wasn't there an extended contract worked out, like 3-4 years?

I'm beginning to believe the "Rickett's are being cheap" line. Starting to feel like the Cubs are not interested in putting a winner on the field and the focus is on Wrigleyville real estate and making as much money as possible knowing we stupid Cub fans will show up no matter what.

What has really fundamentally changed on this roster from last year to this year that makes any of us believe this team will contend for the division, playoffs, and World Series? Swapped out Belli for Tucker, that's about it.

Bregman/Boros gonna be eating some crow by the looks of it.
Offers on a longer term deal appear to be well under what they got offered by Astros.
And signing a short term deal is risky if he has a down year or even an average season.

Cubs can probably get him on a 2/3 year deal for less than they paid Bellinger???

I’m playing 3B for the May San Fran series.

Thats’s how Tom talked Old Man Ricketts into buying the Cubs. I was thrilled because it seemed like Tom was a true fan and would do whatever necessary to win. Now that he has his championship, he’s morphed into his dad. It’s all about the money now.

1 year deal to avoid going to arb. Multi year deal is 2 ways - Tucker may want Soto $$$ to not get to FA. Long term deal is still possible but I'm not expecting it.

Boyd better than Hendriks, bullpen additions, I like Shaw over Paredes at 3B, Kelly is good co starter at C.

Young talent is a year older and they will most likely spend another 20-30 mil on RP, bench, and maybe another starter.

I really like our chance to win the division - a LOT has to go right for the Cubs and wrong for Dodgers to make the WS though.

This Kyle Tucker situation is starting to grind my gears. Unless he A.) carries the team to a deep playoff run or B.) signs an extension during the season, this trade might top the Cease/Quintana deal. I still can’t wrap my brain around sending that package to Houston for 1 season of what will likely amount to nothing.

Let's save the frowns for next week. My point was simply that they wanted to avoid Tucker being asked 138 times about his arb hearing.
Maybe they work something out, maybe they don't. I have some faith they are going to try. I also recognize a lot of GMs are assuming there will be a work stoppage when the CBA expires.
Giving up Cam Smith is big, but he's 2 years away from the majors at best. He has a whole in his swing that has to be corrected. Paredes is a nice player, who fits in better in Houston given his swing. I also think he is getting chunky, so best to deal him. And, they gave up Wesneski, who was expendable, and fingers crossed for him Houston unlocks something in him the Cubs couldn't. It was a decent trade for both sides.

It's all good. :)

Hey, at least Jed is happy they made into the final 8. I lose more faith in him every single day.

Welp, looks like we’re not getting another SP.

I'm okay with this. There isn't a power arm, but the Cubs have a top 10 rotation in MLB, and have depth. Getting Sasaki would have been a cheap bonus. I also think a trade is still a possibility. But, a closer is going to cost money, and very few of the FA pitchers excited me this offseason.
