Official Exhibition Game Thread

Gesell made a last shot 3 from about 35 feet to end the half to get the lead, 46-40.

Pretty awful first half. Just shaking the rust off. It happens guys.

I went to an exhibition where Kansas was hosting a D2 school about 3 years ago. Only ended up like a 10 point game.

Relax.

Forgot about Moss. I was about to say Hutton may be looking at the redshirt considering Williams got a few minutes. No Moss either though.

Iowa leads 46-40 at half on consecutive 3's by Jok and Gessell. Just a few observations:

  • Iowa is uninterested. Period. And it shows. 13 turnovers. All around dreadful performance.
  • No rhythm at all on offense. One pass and a shot. Or no pass and a shot. Even with the older guys on the floor, which was surprising.
  • The challenge between now and Thanksgiving night against Dayton is to find 2-3 newcomers who can contribute/play at a decent level against good competition. Not one of the new guys has looked good against very poor competition. They will get better, it's the first time in the big arena against college-level competition. But this is the reality when you don't bring in high-end recruits. They take time to develop.
  • The veterans have all had their moments. I believe the only newcomers to score are Fleming on a layup when Augustana threw him the ball on an inbounds play and Baer
  • Fran pretty calm until the play got so sloppy and Fleming chucked a 3-pointer 1 on 3 or 1 on 4.
  • No Moss, no Williams, no Hutton in the first half. 3 of the guys I was most interested in seeing.

Baer actually looked pretty competent with his minutes. Very few minutes for Uhl which surprised me.

I'd hate to think that Fran could get upset after an exhibition first half, but someone needs to light a fire under them. Someone be a leader and settle this team down. Find some rhythm.

I know it's just game 1 but come on.

If you can't blow up Sioux Falls what chance do you have against D1 teams.

holy over reaction batman. its opening night in an exhibition game. I seem to recall Iowa struggling to beat lower division UNI in football a few years ago and we ended up in the Orange Bowl. That and Fran is going to try out different combos and situational plays...regardless of what the final score, this game won't define how the season goes.

I think a challenge for us will be establishing any kind of post presence when Woody is out. Or at least being able to mask it with 3 point shooting.

And rebounding. But that's more a lack of effort in a game like this.

A workmanlike effort would be appreciated in the 2nd half. Be where you're supposed to on the floor and execute. That gets the coaches attention. Baer did a nice job in the opening half.

Now, that's what I'm talking about. They do know how to play basketball. (I wasn't worried)

Starters are really rusty, need more gelling time. How does Woody missed 5 bunnies around the rim? Moss finally comes in with 5 mins left.
