Official Exhibition Game Thread

I think the big takeaway tonight is the gimme non conference games should be auditions for which newbies can occupy the 7-8 man spots. Any lower than that, we may be in trouble.

Tonight, Baer surprisingly looked most capable.

Hawks up 26 as game in its waning minutes. Fleming looking good with a flurry of baskets toward the end. Leading scorers: Jok with 18, Gessell with 24; Uthoff around 13. Announcers saying Gessell best player on the floor, but Dolph (during game) gave Peter Jok the 'Player of the Game" because of his accurate shooting. Bobby Hansen said a lot of the freshmen are "Projects." Final 99- 73, Iowa over the Cougars. First games, especially exhibition games, in my experience, can really be ultra-horrible, with all the turnovers and frequent substituting. Also--Nickolas Baer looked good with 8 points and no turnovers. Clemmons was 4-4. After the game the announcers revised the POG variously to Gessell, Jok and Clemons. Freshmen-- nobody did all that well; probably Fleming the best. Woody, Uhl and Jones were not spectacular. Random thoughts. Fran said Uthoff needs to be more aggressive. The coach thought that Baer stood out. Most best words from the coach were for Gessell. The next game will be much more difficult.

Scored 99 points and turned it over a lot, forced some shots. If they clean that up this could be a very good offensive team. Think Clemmons could be the kind of player Eric May was his senior year.

By the end of the game, Woody had missed all 5 point-blank lay-ups. Not what I was expecting from a 4-year starter. C'mon, Woody, if you can't make a lay-up, stuff it!

Stop, please just stop. I can't take another season of people think Woody can just go up there and stuff it at will. Not his game, never has been, never will be. Now he needs to make those chippies but he isn't going to be throwing down much of anything unless he has some momentum towards the basket AND his steps are right.

Well, that was...interesting....

Oddly, a lot can be said, but I'm not sure it says much at all yet.

Team leadership is going to be a work in progress. I do think MG could have a big year.

Unfortunately, Woody is probaby higher percentage shooter 10 feet out facing the basket vs point blank underneath.

Its one game. Don't jump off the ledge yet. Its the first "game experience" for the year. They will get better and be fine.

Adam Woodbury has made 238 of 480 shots in his first three seasons. That's pretty much 50%. Gabe Olaseni his last three years as a Hawkeye? 199-388, .513%.

McCaffery said in his postgame comments that he was really surprised with all the misses by Woody. Said he has been finishing everything in practice.

They turned it over 17 times, had a couple parts of the game where they were out of sync, shot from the line under seventy five percent and still scored 99 points.

And treated it like the scrimmage it was getting plenty of minutes for guys while they look for players seven, eight....just like McCaffery said he would before the game. I would not claim to say I came away "impressed". But I came away confident the staff is doing what it takes to prepare for the real games.

win is a win.... newcomers will come and go. Holy hell we got a bad/good situation. plenty of new talent/ability but not enough spots to let it grow. 2-3 of these newcomers will leave no doubt

Forgot this was on tonight. Doesn't sound like it was very entertaining or informative.

Wonder if Fran wanted to split the minutes between the freshman between the two exhibitions considering there really isn't enough time for all five to get into any sort of rhythm.

Guess well find out next game.

Dan I thought your guy Williams was really solid. He had a nice steal and at one point he used his length and athleticism to take it to the hole and score against a smaller guard. That really showed me something.

I was most excited about his defense, and secondary to that he handled the ball and didn't look like a complete newbie. Though he did make one pass to the third row. :)

These new guys will have us shaking our heads in frustration for awhile...Williams did alright this game. Baer did very well. Next time it might be Moss, or Ellingson...who knows. Fran will work it out and during the year as lights come on the team will get better and better.

What we've got...most of all...is eight new faces and knowing McCaffery at least some of these guys are going to end up pretty special. Call it Bubble Gum Basketball Card Recruiting. Buy an unopened pack with eight cards and maybe you get a couple really good rookie cards.

its a learning curve for anyone who has not played ...true freshman & Jones....that is all there is to it ...Baer & Ellingson looked more in sync because they have the advantage of being around since last fall...wait til the true freshman have been around a while....way too early to see how the 2nd group will unfold ...

the only thing we know is
* Uhl is indeed Woodbury's backup.
* no one can tell Baer he can't be in that 2nd group...played the best game of any of the freshman.
* at least in this game (exhibition) Moss & Hutton played the less minutes (5 & 2)...

The last two minutes of the game Fran had all new guys in there. They ran no offense whatsoever. Whoever got the ball over half court made the move and took the shot. I know it was garbage time but these guys (as a group) are not ready. And that is to be expected. It is really early. Hopefully some learning took place last night. That Sioux Falls team gave us more of a game than I would have expected. They were very physical and they played hard.

TV Teddy was calling them pretty tight early in the first half.

Iowa tied at 38 with 1:25 left. Augustana was 8-21 last year in DII. And we are tied. That tells you pretty much how things have gone.

Sioux Falls was 8-21 last year, yes. Their cross-town rival, Augustana, was 20-2 last year.

Just to clarify, we were 20-2 in conference play, 31-3 overall last year. That being said, USF should be better this year than their 8-21 2014-15 record would indicate. They've added some solid pieces for this year's campaign, including last night's leading scorer, who is new to their roster. He'll obviously help them quite a bit this season. My point is that we should be a better challenge than they were (I hope), but the difference in talent might not be as vast as last year's records would indicate. Overall, I hope our game is better beginning to end than last night's was, but I'll be surprised if Iowa doesn't end up winning by 15-20 (or more).
