*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

Took the day off yesterday & played a nice track that's about an hour from Orlando, Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon course. It's one of the older courses in the state - opened in 1917 (though it's been remodeled several times through the years - there 's only one hole that is exactly the same as the original layout, with a handful almost the same but with tees moved back to add distance or moved at an angle to bring some additional trouble into play.
If you're ever in the area, it's a nice golf course that is far different than most Florida courses. The area is very hilly, so you get a lot of elevation change that you don't typically find on our courses. I played like crap much of the day - got a little too quick & repeatedly pulled tee shots into trouble throughout the front nine. Shot an ugly 42 that could easily have been worse. Hit it a lot better on the back, shot 39 that probably should've been a few shots better but I couldn't make a putt.

Side note/observation...I've been playing a bit more over the last few months than I have for the last 15 or so years. One thing I've noticed - the rule change a few years back allowing you to leave the flag in seems to have caused holes to get ragged a lot faster than when you had to remove the pin. I'm sure it's a result of players being careless as they reach in to remove the ball (or players being lazy & snatching the pin out to pop the ball out of the cup ); the result is the lip of the cup getting worn out.

I had some extra time yesterday so I stopped at Dick’s Sporting Goods to hit some drivers into the net.

The Calloway Rogue is freaking amazing. I was getting 152-157 MPH ball speeds consistently, which is not something I thought possible. Started out hitting the TM Stealth, and didn’t like it at all. When I have more time I would like to hit the newer Ping and Titleist drivers, but the Rogue felt incredible.

So I had a personal golfing first this past weekend. Home course (9hole) as a par 3 and putt tournament. Every hole is a par 3, 100-120 yards on average, 9 holes. And odd holes were long putting challenges. Add score up and see who wins. About 30 golfers.

I won the entire deal, by 3 strokes. I’ve never personally finished first in a single person tournament, no matter what the format.

Looking to attend the US Open next June in Carolina? The USGA just sent out their premium tournament offer...it’s nice, I am sure.
Climate controlled seating...
Valet parking...
Open “premium bar”....
Food service included...
Tix for all 4 days...
TOTAL = a tad over $23k.....
Anyone buying 4 tix here, will receive a complimentary round of golf on Pinehusrt #2...
I’m thinking this will be a great idea for the often discussed HROT Meet and Greet!
What say you?

Hmmm. My buddy (last name Herbst) has a place on #1 and is a member (every couple of years we do our own "pineherbst" cup with a bunch of old friends). May have to give him a buzz to see what the USO plans are...

I feel the governing bodies created a problem where there was very little consensus that a problem (the problem of the golf ball going 5-10 yards too long); like wtf? Like who all agreed there was a problem on the first place and then deciding in a solution that so many people oppose.

Pros will adjust with faster swing speed and their scores will hardly be affected at all but the amateur who was looking at a 169 par 3 now is looking at an equivalent 180 par 3, it changes the hole and the game for them.

As it should.
Distance is making golf course design much more expensive than it needs to be. The USGA/R& A had opportunities 40 years ago to reign in the golf ball but decided against it. That was a mistake then.

interesting you mention golf course design, has there been anything you can cite to show the designers of golf courses are having a difficult time building or updating courses because they want the ball to go 5-10 yards less? I feel the vast majority of golfers like 99.99% can go to any golf course and not feel like they are hitting the ball to long… I wonder how many of them have this thought after a round:

“man, I wish the ball didn’t fly as far off the driver today”

With the way modern clubs are designed I don't think this is as big of an issue as people are making it to be. It's not like we're only allowed to play old school blades. So instead of hitting a PW on approach. I'm hitting an 8i or 9i, big deal.

The narrative is that courses will have to get increasingly longer to keep the pros competitive. I think that's more an issue with course design. I think that's solved by doglegs and more strategically placed hazards.

Which equates to higher maintenance costs...these can be dealt with I am sure but, it is a real (cost) issue for groundsmen. And “pros” aren’t the only ones hitting the ball prodigious distances any more.

The only rollback needed - if any - is for the pros. Less than 2% of golfers are scratch players.

Joe Six pack is not carrying the ball 300 or overpowering courses.

It's a little hard to tell, but you just don't look very balanced. Your swing is very upright, and both elbows are hinged on your backswing when your left elbow should be straighter. I'm just an occasional hacker, so what do I know? I do know there are thousands of teaching pros willing to analyze every aspect of your swing, and offer thousands of differing opinions. Nearly every opinion will involve changing something that makes your swing more complicated.

I got my last 2 rounds of the season in this week. 76 on Thursday with 5 birdies (!) and 77 today with 2 birdies. Gonna spend a lot of time at the simulator this winter in hopes of not losing what I've gained this year.

Anyone else take advantage of this December heat wave?
