*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

It may be a little early yet, but what will Scottie Scheffler need to do to get in the Golf Hall of Fame? He's won 12 PGA related events, including 2 Masters, and 2 Players, and 2 at Bay Hill. He had 2 Korn Ferry tour wins. He's got a 2nd place at the PGA and US Open. He was the PGA Tour Rookie of the year 2019-2020 season.

Qualifications are:
45 years old or 5 years from active competition
15 or more wins (from list of tours) or 2 major wins (includes Players)

Seems to me he just needs to reach age 45 since he's won 2 Masters and 2 Players.

BTW, Bubba Watson is 45. He's got 12 wins, including 2 Masters.

On this date in 1967 I attended my first professional golf tournament…The old “Tournament of Champions” was held annually in Las Vegas….usually at the old “Desert Inn” golf course but because Howard Hughes had bought the Inn it was forced to change venues, to the Stardust;s golf course….think “Casino” and the plane landing on the (7th) fairway in that movie…..

Well, this day in 1967 the opening round featured Arny vs. Jack…..Most of the crowd was with them of course……Interedtingly, as this was an “unofficial” stop on the PGA Tour, some protocols were not followed…..There was a club maker there who had a new putter out and the deal he made with the PGA folks was he would pay every player to use his putter on the front 9 on the first day…The only model he had available was his “Original” model….and honestly sounded like a tuning fork when the club contacted the ball….Most players (including Arny and Jack, abandoned the putter after the front 9…but some used it the entire 18. It was a major coup for some guy name Karsten Solheim and his fledgling golf company, Ping. ;)

Come Sunday, the winner was Canadian George Knutson, famous for his sweet swing and dark glasses. My highlight was a brief 1 on 1 conversation I had with Jack Nicklaus outside the locker room after his round….he was on a cigarette break 🤐….Asked me why I wasn’t in school….where was I from…and that he really liked playing golf collegiately at Finkbine…. It was quite a day fro a kid from town Ioway…..

A guy that I played against regularly in junior tournaments in the mid to late 70s had one of those early model Ping putters. Of course, we had to walk during matches, and every step it would bump against another club and would like a damn bell ringing.
DING DING DING DING. Damn near drove me crazy, but good motivation to beat him.

Good start to this golf year. I have been on the golf forever program for over a year now as well.

Prior to this year, I had one eagle in my life. So far, 2024, after about 10 rounds or so, I have had 4 eagle putts, making one. Yesterday, facing a strong and gusty easterly wind.. par 5; nailed a drive, still had about 230-240 to the green. My second shot, I caught a 3 wood flush as I’ve ever hit one in my life. It stayed pretty low, penetrating the strong winds and it landed on the dry ground took a few bounces and stopped on the green, leaving a 10 footer for eagle, I missed it, but that feeling of flushing a 3 wood is just about as good as sex.

Looking forward to this season, my 2 person scramble partner is playing the best he ever has, so we are looking for compete more.

Bank…
This is the way the Golf Gods tell you (the golfer) “we are getting ready to phuque with you”…next thing you know, you’ll be applying for Scottish citizenship. Good luck in your quest, however.

Played my first round with new driver in Friday. Hit some nice shots. Had 6 pars, which is great for me. Still shot +24 on the other 12 holes. Very up and down day.

I had a few boost for today so hit Scottie to win. Should be fine, but I hate that he has to finish up tomorrow

PGA Tour doesn’t even think to move up tee times by an hour with rain predicted.
It’s incredible how often the Tour messes this up. Not sending groups of 3 off 1 & 10 when the day is going to be short, late tee times too often when darkness could be an issue…they have the best weather models money can buy at their fingertips, and don’t use it. So frustrating. Having a tournament finish on a Monday is such a hassle for so very many people.

Really is.

Plus they are horrible in promoting their stars. There should be golf equivalent shows of Hard Knocks and Inside the NBA.

And they suck with TV coverage - spread over 5 networks - and apps - compare the PGA Tour app to the Masters app.

They are amateur hour compared to the major leagues.
