*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

What are your thoughts on Copper Creek? I only played it once about 10 years ago, it was pretty wet and soggy at the time, so I didn’t have a great experience.

I grew up a couple miles from there. Shot 78 there in high school on JV.

The back 9 is fun as hell, tight in spots and challenging for a shorter course (I think it's around 6500 from the tips if I remember right). The front is easy if you can keep it on the planet. I enjoy Cooper for sure.

A buddy of mine and I flipped a cart over doing "the jump" on #13. They have since put in some terracing which ruined the fun but back in the day you could put the cart in neutral down that hill and there was a plateau. You'd get some serious air.

Thanks. I caught a lot of sh*t at the bar for sandbagging. It's only week 2 of the league.
I played a sandbagged last week. The holes I won, I won by 2-4 strokes… two two holes I lost were just by 1 stroke. We tied net score, even with him shooting 5 shots worse, we both have the same handicap.

My best round ever is an 82 on my home course, a par 72. Best 9-hole round is a 39 which I shot a couple of times last year.

My biggest issue is getting off the tee. I know, I know, drive for show putt for dough, and the best way to a lower score is to work on your short game. None of that matters if you are consistently hitting 3 off the tee or dropping two hitting 3 from a hazard. My home course is laid out that there is water/natural area/OB on at least one and often both sides on every single hole. There are no bail out areas. If you do not hit the fairway you are screwed. This is not like some small-town Iowa 9-hole track where you can slice your ball two holes over and still be good. This is a course where if you lose it even a bit left/right you are toast.

I've seriously considered just hitting a 6 iron off the tee all day to see how that goes but there is one hole that is a forced carry that requires a 3-5FW minimum.

I know everyone says 'drive for show, putt for dough' but you're exactly right. If you're consistently 1-2 strokes behind getting to the surface you could be Seve and you won't score well.

When I was at my best my entire game came and went with the driver. I still have the short game of a 0-2 but, as evidenced earlier in this thread, I haven't played much good golf because my driving has been inconsistent but ok but I can't hit a green outside of 125 to save my life. Last fall I went 71 holes without hitting a green and averaged 87 during that timeframe. Even with a stellar short game.

Drive into the trees, punch out, missed green (not even close), chip to 5' and make the putt is still bogey on a par 4.

OB drive and re-tee into the trees, punch out, missed green chip to 5' and 1 putt is a 7. It get's away from you quickly.

You cannot put too much pressure on any one element of your game for any extended period and expect to be good (or even decent).

8 dudes doing golf trip in DSM in August.
Most coming from Iowa City area. Likely playing 4 rounds over 3 days…. Current setup:

Thursday: Bos Landen on way to DSM
Friday: Cooper Creek
Saturday: TCI and Otter Creek

30 minute radius or so from downtown DSM would be good.

Most have never played any of the DSM courses

Thoughts? Would you swap any courses?
Like others have said I'd swap out otter for Waveland or Legacy (my home track). Copper is one of my favorites in town. Otter is always packed and they don't allow proper spacing between tee times so the round takes 5 hours.

Sneaky fun, underrated, and cheap course in town-Toad Valley. Although it's not in as good of shape as the others.

God I hate Toad Valley. And, you know I am a tried and true EASTSIDER. Terrace Hills is a much better course in the area, IMO.

When I was a child we would play both and Toad's fairways were ALWAYS concrete.

It's not as bad as I make it out to be. I remember playing there in a tournament when I was 11-12 and I got a ton of bad breaks because the fairways were concrete and I still remember it to this day. That's absolutely 75% of the reason for my hatred of that place.

Also, the driving range is stupid. Straight up that hill? WTF

They redid it and added some top golf technology to the range. It's pretty impressive investment for a family owned course. The 2 sims are legit as well.

Terrace looked rough earlier this year. Very patchy on many greens. Playing there tomorrow so we'll see how it looks.

Update on terrace (as I take a deuce at the turn)-several new cart paths, but the requisite straw everywhere trying to grow grass back. They must have scalped the greens this morning. Like putting on ice.

I struggle off the tee many times as well, I bought this last spring and after a bit of work it has really helped me get decent distance off the tee and keep it in play.

I got new TaylorMade irons last year, but as is Midwest tradition, I must point out I got them on sale for $200 off.
I have all TaylorMade second hand as well. I lucked out and a buddy gave me his P790's for $250. I'm a big fan of GlobalGolf

Got my full Mizuno bag a couple of weeks ago. Irons are the 245’s 5-PW,GW. T24 52,56,60 wedges. STZ 230 driver and the ST Max 3 and 7 wood. Putter for is the OMOI 3.

Love the irons. Similar in size to the P770 with a little more workable ball flight and still plenty of forgiveness for its size.

Driver is very accurate but short compared to my Paradym and Darkspeed. I am giving it one more round.

Fairway woods are straight cheat code. If you want a high launch, slight draw with great distance give them a look. They are staying in the bag.

I love the look of the wedges but they are short heel to toe. Feel is great with good spin but they are too small for my liking and I am not a fan of the leading edge.

If you are thinking of a milled putter roll one of these. Feel is incredible and if you like a heavier weight look here. Plus you get the weight kit at no extra cost and they are cheaper than a Cameron.

Nice set, I have the hot metal 921 (4-GW), Not quite as nice as the set you just got but I really like them.
Congrats on the new clubs!

I'm relatively a new golfer (4 years) and decided to dumb down my bag to keep my game more simple.

Perks of the job so this was all free! Proper fitting for myself is the 923 Forged irons but if I get them free why not try the 245's out.

I’m 33 and still use my high school clubs and shoot consistently in the 80s. The benefits of high quality equipment I feel like are rarely felt by most duffers like us. JMO.

Third round of the year had both my worst 9 and best 9. Shot a 48-39 at Legacy. The 48 on the front was pretty inexcusable. Second shots were crap today. Hoping to get the GHIN in single digits this year.

Going out to Panorama to see if I can beat the old man tomorrow @Bank of Hawk @Whiskeydeltadeltatango
No invite? What a jerk. Legacy is my home track. And I'd be thrilled to shoot that there. The 6th hole gives me fits. And I think I've donated a ball to the pond on 2 in all but 2 rounds. Anymore my plan is to drive it into the water and take the friendly drop zone on the other side. Otherwise if I lay up I'm usually dropping 3 on the other side.

I love Legacy, mostly because they allow singles to book instead of forcing them to walk on and it’s challenging, yet fair, course. And for whatever reason, I usually play pretty well down there. My favorite public course in the metro.

Lake Panorama is a toughie. But I love playing that course.

Golfed Bent Tree in council bluffs in March for the first time and came away impressed.

I played that in high school when I had about my lowest handicap and I still shit the bed.

That course is tough. 18 still going 480-500 from the tips?

They do, but they force you to fill in another group to do it. I prefer to call on the slower days and get my own spot on a totally open time. Any random playing partner would probably appreciate it.

Oh yeah they do but I’m used to that by now. Many courses can be a real PITA when it comes to single players.

Tiger is playing the US Open on a special exemption this year, for the first time in his career. I think it's completely appropriate this year. After this year? I'd judge that by how much he plays and how well he does.
Not a fan of special exemptions, but, Tiger probably should get a special exemption for as long as needed. He has won several USGA events.

Interesting.. if I had to play 3 courses in Des Moines area (from about five years ago), for public courses:

*TCI … tough track
*Legacy in Norwalk .. beautiful and challenging
*All 27 holes at Beaver Creek (the far back 9 is wild and has an island green)

Other courses I would consider:

Otter creek & AH Blank

For a more scorable round, Grandview Golf has a bunch of short par 4s.

TCI sucks - stay away

Bos Landen - haven't played in a number of years, was not in great shape. Challenging course with a few really bad golf holes

Otter Creek is okay - pretty generic - the old Otter Creek was a lot of fun

Copper Creek - not bad, holes on back nine get pretty tight

Waveland is a good choice - each hole is different

Jester Park has always been a good option - they have lengthened it over the years and is always in good shape

Beaver Creek is not bad - the east course is a group of good holes up to the last one.

Grandview is short and fun with a lot of slopes in the greens. Relaxing muni atmosphere

Blank is a fun course - not sure what kind of shape it is in now.

When I hit the lottery, I’m buying Waveland, upgrading it, and bringing in a U.S. Open.l to Des Moines.

I love that course
It has been upgraded some. Have played many many rounds on Waveland. The variety of holes makes it fun to play. Tough walk. #16 is a challenging hole. I know they have been trying to figure out #3 the par 5. Great set of par 3's

The greens always seem to be their best in the fall

Mr. Hogan once famously said the tee ball was the most important shot on every hole. When asked to explain, he replied…”have you ever tried to make par on a hole when you have to hold a tree limb with one hand and swing the club with the other?”
