*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

Played a few times last week. I must have dialed in the perfect amount of drinks on the front 6-7 holes at Copper Creek because my last 10-11 were the best stretch of golf I've played in a long time. Had a stretch of 5-6 holes where I was only +2. Which is huge for me.

Been out around 10 rounds since early April. New irons in the bag. TM Stealth, + 1 length. Starting to really dial these new ones in, yesterday I drew a 175 yard, 6 iron to a few feet from the hole. Also hit a 4 iron to a 200 yard par 3, distance was exact, had a 10 foot putt for birdie (missed, greens being aerated, like playing plinko on the greens rn).

Still very hit or miss with the driver. I don’t want to upgrade it for the sake of upgrading it, but I wasn’t fitted for it and have never hit it very consistently, so might have to bite the bullet.

All my basement chipping drills over the winter are clearly paying dividends.

My best score has been +3 on 9 holes. Handicap around 12-14 for eighteen holes; but I think that is going to drop to 7-9 range by mid summer.

What kind of driver do you hit and what is the shaft? I have 16 years of club fitting experience and can give you some pointers and or recommendations for a new driver or shaft.

Thanks, it’s a Ping G400 with a Alta CB S Flex SS shaft
You have a mid to mid high spin head with a higher spin shaft. It is good for higher trajectory and control. I am guessing you are in the 6’4” range and get steep putting even more spin on it.

Option 1 would be to find a lower spin shaft such as a HZRDUS Smoke Black with a Ping tip on it.

Option 2 would look at a new setup. The G400 was from 2017 I believe. Newer tech with the added use of more carbon can get a higher launch with lower spin. That is where your distance comes from.

If you want a driver recommendation let me know.

That’s really good feedback, thank you. I am between 6’3” - 240 pounds. I’ve been told, proportionally that I have a longer torso, my hands resting at my side go down about 1/3 from the top of my thigh.

Yes, a driver recommendation with a shaft recommendation would be awesome.

Exactly what you said is what I think is going on.

When fitted for irons, we ended up going with a stiff shaft.

Best bang for the buck right now is the Cobra LTDX. It is a 2022 model priced at $299.99 down from $499.99 last season. Compared to my current driver which is the Callaway Epic Speed it has a touch lower launch and I dropped my spin numbers by about 300 rpm's. For my job I try and demo as many clubs as possible. I would fit you to the 10.5 degree head and the Project X HZRDUS Smoke iM10 60 stiff.

Cobra's LTDx Driver is designed for the golfer seeking ultimate distance and stability. LTDx combines low spin, fast ball speeds, and extreme forgiveness all to deliver the longest total distance.
Key Features:
  • PWR-COR Technology – The club includes a multi-material weighting system that positions the weight as much forward and low as possible. 19 grams total (14 gram steel internal weight and a 5 gram exterior aluminum weight). The addition of a 15 gram back weight perfectly balances the LTDx with low spin and high launch.
  • CNC Milled Infinity Face – The face wraps around the leading edge of the club to increase the zone of maximum ball speed. The face also has an alignment aid on the topline of the driver.
  • H.O.T. Face Technology – The club face utilizes variable thickness design, that is precision tuned for speed. H.O.T stands for "Highly Optimized Technology". Using captured data, Cobra identified 15 different zones to maximize ball speed across a larger portion of the face
Option two would be the Callaway Rogue ST Max. Compared to the Cobra it is a touch more forgiving on mis hits, especially towards the toe. Launch is a touch higher and on dead center strikes it is long but I was consistently longer with the Cobra. The Callaway has a touch more draw bias than the Cobra and I already hit the ball right to left so that was why the Cobra for me was a better fit.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver is built for all levels of golfers seeking a driver producing a high launch with mid-spin and minimal draw bias to slow fade ball flights and improve accuracy. Weight positioned low, deep, and in the heel of the driver delivers players a stable, forgiving club that optimizes launch to achieve deeper carry distances from various angles at impact.

Key Features:

  • Tungsten Speed Cartridge – A new Tungsten Speed Cartridge structure pushes 26-grams of weight and mass deep and low in the driver to rebound faster ball speeds from off-center strikes and improve stability at impact.
  • JailBreak Speed Frame – Enhancing stability in both horizontal and torsional directions, a Jailbreak Speed Frame stiffens the face to impart enhanced energy to the golf ball and dependable distance from impacts across the face.
  • Titanium Unibody Construction – Lowering the center of gravity, this construction design works with saved weight from a Triaxial Carbon crown and sole to redistribute mass to produce a high launch angle and draw bias ball flight.
  • Artificial Intelligence Designed Face – A new formula in the artificial intelligence designed face lowers spin while adding forgiveness for more control over the ball flight.
For the Rogue I would put you in a 10.5 degree head with the Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei AV White 65. Price is $399.99

For latest and greatest it is the Callaway Paradym. For 2023 drivers it was the longest and straightest for me. Compared to my current Callaway I picked up 3 mph ball speed and even more on toe shots which is my miss. I am most likely going to pull the trigger on one soon.

The Paradym driver model provides a refined shape with high MOI and adjustable perimeter weighting. Engineered for players of all skill levels, this club promotes high launch and low spin characteristics along with a neutral ball flight. It’s our best combination of distance, forgiveness, and adjustability.

· A PARADYM SHIFT IN DISTANCE FROM AN INDUSTRY-FIRST 360° CARBON CHASSIS

360° Carbon Chassis promotes unprecedented weight redistribution for maximized distance. The Triaxial Carbon crown and Forged Carbon sole is 44% lighter than a titanium chassis. This massive weight savings is repositioned for higher MOI and increased forgiveness.

· SPEED & STABILITY FROM NEW JAILBREAK A.I.

Our new A.I. designed Jailbreak system provides stability in both the horizontal and torsional direction. Now with a 33% lighter weight design, we’ve enhanced stability for faster ball speeds from our industry-leading COR.

· NEW A.I DESIGNED FACE OPTIMIZED FOR DOWNRANGE DISPERSION

An all-new A.I. face optimization enhances speed, launch and spin, and now downrange dispersion. This is the world’s most advanced driver face designed by artificial intelligence.

· INDUSTRY-LEADING FACE CUP AND FORGED TITANIUM FACE FOR FAST BALL SPEEDS

Paradym is the first driver to utilize Callaway’s industry-leading face cup technology. We’ve paired the face cup with a powerful, forged titanium face, a combination that provides higher energy transfer to the ball than a standard driver face insert.

· ADJUSTABLE PERIMETER WEIGHTING FOR DESIRED SHOT SHAPE

The driver head features a refined shape with high MOI and adjustable perimeter weighting. From a 15g sliding weight, players can experience an average of 12 yards of shot shape correction.

10.5 head again with the Project X HZRDUS Black 60 stiff shaft. Price is $599.99

I left out the Stealth drivers as I don't care for the carbon face. They are long and low spin but they do have a noticeable drop off in performance on toe and heel shots compared to the others listed. Titilest makes great drivers as well but I think you need more forgiveness at this point.

Full disclosure I do sell clubs for a living on an online platform. I can hook you up for a deal if possible and the company I work for has a 14 day playability guarantee on all stock clubs.

I like Scheffler’s game for this course. But I think he might be going through a “Spieth” thing where the funky idiosyncrasies of his swing are showing some vulnerabilities. His creativity with wedges will be useful here.

I know they’re LIV guys and we’re supposed to hate them, but DJ and Brooks are built for Oak Hill. Most tee shots favor a fade, and length will be tested. Strength to get out of the rough is important.

I’m probably going to bet 3 or 5 guys to finish top 20. I’ll post them once I can get a closer look at the field and the odds.

In my salary cap league I have:

Koepka, DJ, Hatton, Scott, Fowler, "The Hotel" Clark.

In my tiered league I have:

Rahm, Cameron Young, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Brooks Koepka, Christiaan Bezuidenhout

I like Rahm. Don't love Scottie (but he certainly can win easily). I do like the LIV heros DJ and Koepka. I'd like to see Cam Smith perform well also. Hatton is interesting and I think he is either in contention or MCs. No in between.

Others I like: X, Spieth
Others I don't love: Thomas, Rory

Also, before he wins the damn thing since I decided not to pull the trigger, I was eyeing Tom Hoge as a longshot winner. I like the toolkit, but he simply hasn’t been good lately.

Frost delay this morning, leading to some epically stupid takes on golf twitter.

Got 9 in on Tuesday afternoon, 43 at my local track. That seems to be my number. I was dead set on sub 80 rounds last year (1) but with a toddler I think I'm going to make my goal sub 40 9s in my quest for 80.

My slice off the box is back and I need to become much better within 30 yards.

If anyone has putting drills for a 12 foot mat I would love to hear them. It gets boring doing the same stuff.

Played a little last night, felt good to swing a club again.
Should be a fun week of golf watching the PGA at work and not actually working..

You have a website or you sell on ebay or something?

Just picked up a replacement Vokey for my son today. State tournament next week and he's lost some spin on his "old" one.
Independent contractor for Curated. We get leads in and use our experience to recommend, fit and sell clubs.

Their sales model is really unique in today's world of doing everything from your phone. So far it has exceeded my expectations. If you want my direct contact information if you have an interest in any clubs let me know. If I can give some sort of discount to anyone here up I will. Note TaylorMade, Titleist, Wilson and XXIO are excluded. I can't even discount those for my brother.

Edit to add I will be having a set of PXG 0311P Gen 2 irons I will be getting rid of when I get my new Srixon irons in. I was going to get JPX923 Hot Metal irons but they are 6 plus weeks backordered for custom orders.
