Just read the board rules and didn't see it. Could you post please? TIA

Rutgers was the first University to enjoy a live mascot. The "Scarlet Knight" was a patient from a local sanitarium by the name of Ebenezor Starlinghood. They would dress him up in an actual ancient suit of armor. This was long before football of course. The preferred sport was dueling with pistols. Eb would wander about the dueling field and on more than one occasion managed to block a shot! Of course the armor only slowed down the round ball and thus the term, "Scarlet Knight".

Eventually, the Civil War broke out and metal was needed to make weapons. Rutgers had the suit melted down and no one knows what became of Eb.

1) Does the team fly in on Thursday during the day and then fly out right after the game?

2)do they fly in Wednesday and leave after game Thursday?

3)fly in Thursday, sleep, and fly out Friday morning?

TIA

Edit 4th option; fly in Wednesday, play game, sleep, and then fly out Friday?

Little Known Facts.

Origin of the Rutger's name. Names have beginnings just like anything. Some names come from family businesses, for instance, a Smith could come from blacksmith. Some are due to a family trait, Baer for example is a Germanic name for bear. Perhaps some in his family looked like bears? Then you have names after regions, blah blah blah.

So how did Rutgers get it's name? A popular misconception is it comes from rotgut, a kind of cheap whiskey brewed by lower classes and nearly impossible to find these days except for in prison where it is made with raisons, sugar and toilet water. While there is ample evidence of some kind of connection to Rutgers, no, the University did not take it's name from rotgut whiskey.

In the 1700's as travel by wagon and carriage became more popular, roads were not up to shape for comfortable riding. It is easy to imagine water runoff creating large ruts in the road which upon crossing a wagon could lurch, causing chipped teeth, accidental scratching and unseemly bruising of the torso and appendages. Wealthy travelers took to employing low paid, low skilled labor to run in front of carriages and throw themselves into ruts, filling them up long enough for the carriage to smoothly pass over. These laborers would then jump up, run to pass in front of the carriage and do it again and again.

The sound they made when run over was a "Guurr!" as air was forced from their lungs. So, you might have guessed by now they became known as "Rutgers". As roads improved in the Colonies their services were no longer required and a school was formed to reeducate Rutgers in other minor skills like cleaning latrines, fish, game, and the nasty bits of old people.

The spirit of the name today is honored at Rutgers University where at many sporting events the Rutgers team seems to enjoy laying down and being run over by their opponent.

In modern times, there exists what is known as an "Insurance Rutger", a person who makes a living being hit by cars.

Thanks for reading, "Little Known Facts". Tomorrow's story: The man who put Northwestern in the Midwest and the Wildcat that Inspired Him.

Excellent post, Daniel. I was always curious why they were called Rutgers University and not just New Jersey University. Learn something new everyday.

Football Related: Rutgers played the first ever college football game in 1869. There were less than 30 players on each and the ball was like a sphere. Rutgers won by a score of 6-4. The more you know.

Bump

Can someone with inside info with team help answer this?

I thought SUNJ or the State University of New Jersey became Rutgers during one of the World Wars when someone with the last name of Rutgers saved the university with a financial gift.

I hope the Hawks get in and get out of N.J. quickly Thursday. There is a major storm due to hit the area later in the week.

Ozzie Nelson (of Ozzie and Harriet fame) played quarterback for Rutgers.

No, not at all. The story I made up makes much more sense than yours, or in fact even the true story which is terribly boring.

Rutgers has lost 21 straight Big Ten conference games. Last victory occurred on January 11th, 2015 against #4 Wisconsin (67-62).

Hopefully, Fran can substitute frequently and play the bench liberally in the 2nd half.

Prediction: Iowa 91 Rutgers 69

Go Hawks!

How did New Jersey beat Wisconsin last year? Wow.

Iowa is 2-0 this year when wearing gold.

Here's hoping for a quick, painless game.

There's little, to no, doubt as to what should be the outcome [W/L] of the game, so lets pray for not a lot of fouls by RU or play stoppage. Get the W and on the way back home as quickly as possible. Just come out of there with no injuries and get ready for PU on Sunday.

Almost wish this game wasn't on the sked this year, despite the 'easy W' it represents. Its the type of game where the outcome isn't the worry, its the possibility(s) of detrimental season-affecting things that could transpire.
