***Official Northern Illinois @ Iowa Football Prediction Thread***

If NIU scores more than 17 that does not bode well for our defense going forward. They have a decent line, but their QB, RBs, and WRs are just okay. Unless they have made massive strides between last year and this one, they are going to struggle on offense (unless our LBs struggle more than we expect...in which case, buckle up).

Offensively, I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised. NIU has a respectable defense, but we can attack them. Iowa has a full complement of weapons offensively like we haven't had in a long, long time. And, year two of BF is going to look a lot smoother and more consistent than year one. Pass Pro is obviously a concern, but we can do things to cover that to a large extent.

If we are where I think we are, we win this one 40-13 or so.

Less than 2 weeks ago you started a thread here on HR entitled "IOWA WILL LOSE TO NORTHERN ILLINOIS".

You're an idiot.
You should be more direct on how you really feel about this:(

Well it's that time of year again. It is time for Iowa Football.

NIU will not be easy. They have a solid DL and Iowa's two starting tackles are suspended.

Iowa's game plan for this game and all season needs to be Stanley, Fant, and Hockenson. I don't think Iowa runs the ball well. I say 113 yards for the game. Stanley to the tight ends will be the difference unless we have a lot of turnovers.

Iowa - 28
Northern Illinois - 24
21/10 Hawks

24-16 Iowa

Iowa wins, but doesn't cover.

NIU has been extremely aggressive on defense in the past, and I expect the same in this game. They'll give us some problems, but I also expect to make them pay a few times. I see ISM or Fant breaking some long plays.

WTF does Leroy Smith have to do with this kid. We have plenty of TE's who can chip him, and a DL they cannot handle.

38-3
I was responding to a comment that appeared to demean the size of the NIU kid ...just pointing out size doesn't necessarily mean a lot when you have superior talent.

Try using your brain instead of shooting off at the mouth before posting next time.

Copied from the Husky football message board. Interesting take. I think what this guy fails to address is depth. Fresh bodies in the 2nd half is where Iowa should prevail in the trenches.

-Like many fans of P5 teams when facing a MAC school, there some Hawkeye fans proclaiming - "we will grind them down and wear them out" Well, here's a look at the lines of both teams for a comparison. I'm assuming they mean the wearing out will be done on the lines unless they were going to wear NIU down with their safeties and wide receivers.

O-lines:
Starters
NIU avg 6'4.00", 307lbs
Iwa avg 6'4.75", 299lbs

Reserves(less true freshman)
NIU avg 6'5.00", 302lbs
Iwa avg 6'3.50", 294lbs

D-lines:
Starters
NIU avg 6'1.50", 267lbs
Iwa avg 6'5.75", 275lbs

Reserves(less true freshman)
NIU avg 6'2.33", 264lbs
Iwa avg 6'2.33", 277lbs

Tight End:(starter + back up)
NIU avg 6'3.50", 254
Iwa avg 6'5.00", 245

RB(largest starter)
NIU 5'11", 227 lbs(Harbison)
Iwa 5'11", 221lbs (Young)

NIU's total weight starting O-line + starting D-line = 2578lbs
Iwa's total weight starting O-line + starting D-line = 2570lbs

I did the best I could for who the Iowa starters will be on both lines. Being so many suspensions and all. And there's no denying Iowa has a noticeable height advantage at D-End. Crazy tall there. If you can wear someone down with height I suppose they have a case. But I don't see any huge advantage in weight.

Another tidbit...

"At least one inch of Iowa's DL advantage comes in the form of DE AJ Espenesa who I believe is 6'5" vs 6'0"(6'1" if we're being generous) Sutton Smith. Now who would most pundits pick as the better player? While I believe the team respects Iowa and all of our opponents, I have to think that there is not an ounce of "fear" playing any big ten team. I would consider Iowa as essentially an equal in the product on the field."

No respect for AJ? Which player has NFL written on him? Is Sutton a Linebacker at the next level?

I love that. Like their OL having a lager average weight makes them equal or better players? Be sure to turn the switch on your electric football game there buddy........

Exactly. Depth of talent will probably come into play in many Iowa games this year. Unfortunately we’ve artificially contracted our depth for the NIU game and I’m hopeful that won’t be a deciding factor in the outcome. On the positive side, this early experience may actually expand our overall depth on the Oline for the rest of the year.

I’m glad Sutton is 6’1” 235 instead of 6’5” 275 with similar skills and motor. But attitude, heart and execution are much bigger factors than an extra couple of inches or 30-50 pounds.

Iowa 20 - NIU 14 . Full disclosure I did take NIU and the points when it was +14.5 for all of 2 days. line now around +10 , I got a small play on NIU moneyline +300 , I think this game is closer than people think and Iowa will have to help the Tackles some , I hope BF runs straight ahead blocking and play action for some deep shots in this game, I don't believe running wide/ zone will be effective . I do think Iowa wins a game that takes a few months off peoples lives , too stressful a game that it should be.

Exactly this. Perusing the NIU message board they are concerned about their offense and think, if they’re going to win, it will be an 18-16 field goal kicking contest. I’ll say 31-13, iowa.

Iowa up 14-7 at half and gets a 28-10 win. Mark it a success, if there are no significant injuries. Look for Iowa to get a break when a wide open NIU receiver, trips over the tiger hawk at mid-field! (In response, NCAA requires Iowa to use paint rather than plywood for the insignia.)

Iowa - 28
Northern Illinois - 24

I think this score and result is a pretty good guess. That said I have some very serious worries...

1) This NIU QB is supposed to be mobile and a decent passer.....we always struggle with guys like that. Our Dline should be good but rushing 4 could be very frustrating.

2) As mentioned above our starting tackles are suspended...they have a stud DE. I think the kicker is Brian F. Can he design a game plan that overcomes this issue? Run right at him? Play action after some success running right at him? Use TEs to chip block?

I think this will be a struggle but hopefully we can survive and get to week 2 with our tackles back and our defense all on the same page.

About five years ago, Iowa played what are likely the best two NIU teams in consecutive years and split the games. The 2012 Iowa team was poor and the 2013 team didn’t start off very good. So, I think very good NIU teams are on par with average Iowa teams. This Iowa team should be better than average and I don’t think NIU is as good as those previous teams, so I’ll go with Iowa in this one with a score that is similar to last years opener.

With a rough count to this post, the picks are Iowa 51 and NIU 5.
I'll go with Iowa 38 NIU 17.

Make it 52 for Iowa victory

Something like 21-9 Iowa. Ain't gonna be easy and I guarantee the game thread and week after here will be full of DOOM - but Iowa should win.

I just don't see NIU being able to generate enough offense, and much like their win over Nebraska last year, Iowa would have to help them for NIU to win.

Iowa 27-17. If a couple suspensions means we can't win a home game against a solid MAC team at home with months to prepare...well than we should swap leagues.
