****Official Republican Debate 2023 Thread****

Not from a policy perspective but just a politics perspective on Haley, I’d be curious how some of her comments about being a woman (and as she was the only woman on stage) play to the republican voters. I did see some republicans on reddit a bit annoyed that she brought it up (i.e. identity politics) multiple times. However, that group skews young men. I wonder if it is a nice selling point to conservative women / suburban women.
To be honest, I found myself not even thinking about that ... and I kind of ignored it when she brought it up. Republicans elect women to public office all the time. In fact, I do not think I have ever had a conversation with another Republican about a candidate's gender ... ever. We (at least in my circle) are all about the issues.

We get it Chis you don’t like Republicans. You have my permission to stop searching every nick and cranny in the social media land for anti Republican stances and posting them here. Go get some rest and start fresh in the morning
Chis ain't the only one!

It's why Republicans keep losing the popular vote every cycle. They are the Party of special interests.

I love who Trump calls RINOS. Real Republicans. Not the cultist trash doing his bidding in the party turned cults current "leadership".

Like most I thought Haley really did the best and should see a boost.

I thought Pence was extremely unlikable and hope he goes away.

Tim Scott who I had some hopes for didn't get to speak much and when he did he basically said what he does on his commercials.

Christie was pretty awful. Retire Chris

DeSantis was what we thought he is. Didn't help or hurt himself tonight.

Vivek had some good moments and bad moments. Kind of scary on the international front, but on point with the importance of the family and education.

I liked Burgum more than I thought I would, but don't give him any hope to move the needle.

Asa was okay but a longshot as well.

Trump. Wish he would go away.

Biden. If I'm the Democrats I'd keep him off any debate stage. He is degrading mentally since he took office. Another year before he debates isn't going to help.

Biden > Any of these Clowns.

Thanks for the laughs

Liked Haley the best but am a dem voter so guessing the republicans felt differently. I do plan to caucus republican so she’d have my vote if only based on tonight.

For the couple republicans here, who did you like best? Assume none did enough to really weaken Trump as front-runner.
I thought Haley had the best night for speaking to moderates and independents.

I thought RDS had a good not great night, he didn’t separate from the pack as much as the herd thinned itself. Some of the criticisms I’ve seen on this board of him about his energy or dullness etc were more on display with Scott, Bergam, and Asa.

I thought the questions pretty much sucked.

A debate with that many people on stage is a poor format and a total shit show.

If republicans are the party of special interests, then democrats are the party of special ed.

My big issue with Haley is her pledge to support Trump if he is the nominee. No one putting party over country like that will get my vote - especially when the front runner is such a piece of shit. It’s a real shame her party loyalty casts such a blind spot on her judgement as I like her fiscal discipline and her thoughts on foreign affairs.

The perfect candidate from either party doesn't exist from my POV. Nikki did enough to satisfy some/most of the Trumpers while seeming some what less far right on other issues that makes the rest of the field a hard pass from the middle. Keep in mind this was a republican debate, so in many ways they were jockeying to get to the right of each other, just as we would see some of the most progressive/liberal stances taken in a democrat debate.

As I was writing my answer I knew some clown would play the race card. Congratulations you are the winner
It’s not “playing the race card”, just a fact. Trump exposed just how the major cornerstone of today’s GOP is white nationalism. You getting your panties in a bunch over it doesn’t change that fact, You had no substantive response because deep down even you know it’s true.

I would much rather have somebody who gets things done rather than plays politician. I can’t believe you posted that crap

Meatball gets things done? He has been absent from his job for almost 6 months. Aside from culture war attention grabbing stunts, he’s accomplished very little in 5 years in office.

Pathetic that he fell asleep in Maui after democrats failed their citizens and contributed to their deaths
Maybe get your mouth off the dicks of far right propagandists. You try and pretend like you care about Maui, but here you are once again proven either a liar, or too stupid, or too lazy to get the truth…

All fair points. But I still don’t think courting Trump’s base will work for any of the candidates in this primary season. Trump will almost certainly be on the primary ballots, even if in prison, and no one is going to take away his far right base if he is on the ballot. In this election I just don’t think there is enough wiggle room to sway them.

Acknowledging that, the only conceivable path would be to try to welcome the more moderate RINOs back to the party and potentially go a step further in converting independents. Christie has the right strategy, but he is the wrong candidate to pull it off. I think Haley could, but she is blowing it with the loyalty pledge.

I think the problem all of last nights candidates have is that even if one of them won the nomination, too many of the far right tea party MAGA zealots will still put Trump on their ballot as a write-in due to cult loyalty.

Usually these republican ghouls will have one outlier issue where they are sane but not this guy. He literally has a terrible answer for every issue. Mostly he clings to old, tired and failed republican talking points but claims to be an outsider who isn’t handcuffed by 30 year old slogans.

I’m no Biden lover. I have been conservative most of my life, but the GOP has been losing me since the Tea Party. I’ve voted Perot-Clinton-Bush-Bush-McCain-Romney before Trump. I think I could vote Perry, but she has basically zero chance at the nomination. I’ll never vote Trump. I’ll keep listening, but it’s really unlikely I’d vote DeSantis. Talk to me about Haley.

The trouble is, the few remaining Republicans with integrity, like Haley or Christie have virtually no chance of winning over the MAGA wing of the party in order to win the nomination.

It was true though, conservatives have gotten away from their fiscal responsibility
This started in the 1980s though. I was Republican then. I started realizing with the expensive hammers, toilet seats and coffee makers that Republicans being fiscally conservative was a myth. They aren't and haven't been for 40 years. They spend and then cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations which should never have happened.
