****Official Republican Debate 2023 Thread****

I watched that.

God, Iowans are stupid.

Trump, and his surrogate Vivek, really know how to manipulate the minds of White Nationalists.

There wasn't a minority in that group and just verifies how Iowa is no longer representative of this country's electorate.
BTW: That group was the Story County Republicans in Nevada Iowa.

Which states that went for Trump are going to flip for Biden? North Carolina, maybe? Otherwise red states will continue to vote red. I would love it if you were right.
I don't even count those as returning. I just mean he'll have a comfy margin. The states you've rightly mentioned are poisoned with magats.

Honestly, the last true landslide election in my opinion was ‘84. People have won comfortably since, but imo a landslide is just a rout.

It's quite interesting watching the different cable networks and their post debate reviews.

Fox talking heads thought RonnyBoy and Scott did well.
CNN picked Haley and Pence.
MSNBC picked Haley and Vivek, calling him "Trump's stand in".
I think the next debate only has 6 contestants when it happens.

Florida and Iowa if you think all these posters on here are saying they won't vote for Trump again aren't lying.

It must burn you to ne end that it's on video. The lefts owellian attempts to tell us not to believe the evidence of our eyes is comical. Cultists in denial.
Sounds like one of the main tenents of Lying Donnie Sexual Abuser's playbook. Don't believe your eyes or ears... only believe what I tell you.

Hey Scruddy... "Owellian" ?? Are those dang owls up to no good again?

My big issue with Haley is her pledge to support Trump if he is the nominee. No one putting party over country like that will get my vote - especially when the front runner is such a piece of shit. It’s a real shame her party loyalty casts such a blind spot on her judgement as I like her fiscal discipline and her thoughts on foreign affairs.

I had the opposite reaction to that issue. Remember that when Trump the president started meddling with what she considered her responsibility (as UN Ambassador), she promptly quit. I was relieved that she came out in the debate and said she liked him and considered him a friend.

The point stands that she is her own person. .... and that she would be a complicated choice for Vice President.

I watched that clip and was surprised to see an Amishman, maybe even a couple. Don't they count as a minority?

Not from a policy perspective but just a politics perspective on Haley, I’d be curious how some of her comments about being a woman (and as she was the only woman on stage) play to the republican voters. I did see some republicans on reddit a bit annoyed that she brought it up (i.e. identity politics) multiple times. However, that group skews young men. I wonder if it is a nice selling point to conservative women / suburban women.
Doubtful women are often the worst critics of other women. It's a difficult balancing act to run as woman for higher office. It you're too aggressive you're bitch. If you're too nice then you're not taken seriously.

Whereas if you’re a guy shouting at the top of your lungs, you’re enthusiastic.

The bearded guy?
That's Brett Barker, the mayor.

Those 15 were active Story County GOP.
Having previously lived several miles from Amish country, I can guarantee you they are not a politically active group of people.
Just the opposite.
Or did I miss your sarcasm?

Last night's debate was revealing. Vivek was definitely trying to be Trumps stand-in which begs the question if he's so enamored with Trump why is he running against him. Nikki Haley absolutely destroyed Vivek over his insanely stupid remarks on Ukraine. Finally, last night's biggest reveal was that six out of eight candidates said they would support Trump as the nominee even if he was convicted of a felony. What?? This alone should disqualify all of them.

So I didn't watch the debate, but this is pretty interesting.

So, Desantis did pretty well, considering most politics-heads watching thought he was merely ok. His favorable/unfavorables are pretty remarkable given the months-long assault from both the left and from Trump. And the fact that he clearly came out of the debate in an improved position is interesting. I think that for a lot of people, this is the first time actually seeing him, and some of the constant criticism of him being weird, awkward, or detached kind of backfired, as he could still be a bit uncomfortable, but a lot of people thought he was going to be some kind of freak show when they finally got a look at him.

He has not had a very good campaign so far, but he still has a decent starting space right now to right the ship. One of the few who's unfavorables went down after the debate.

Haley's strong showing definitely paid dividends too. She needed this.

Trump lost ground not being there. It's a small amount, but its not nothing. While he still holds a commanding lead in polling, others are in striking distance in Iowa and NH. If he continues to slip from not showing up at debates, and that leads into losses in Iowa and NH...that could put him in a troubling spot.

The best thing about DeSantis and Haley coming out of this as "winners" is the idea planting the idea that there is an actual alternative to Trump. Some Republican voters still care about winning. Not all of them, a large percentage just care about Trump, but some are going to look at a DeSantis/Haley ticket and see something that can beat Biden.

The next thing that needs to happen is for some of these people to peel off, particularly Scott, Christie and Pence. I like Scott a lot, but he didn't have the debate he needed to get over the top. Pence has no constituency, although I respect some things about him. And Christie serves no purpose if Trump isn't on stage with them. I think the sooner they withdraw and throw their support behind DeSantis or Haley the better.

Scott should be campaigning with and for DeSantis, he's a likeable guy. Christie should just be doing talk shows attacking Trump, but he doesn't need to be anywhere in the same frame as DeSantis or Haley. Pence should probably just go away (and I have respect for a lot of things about Pence).

Lying Donnie Sexual Abuser being the Repub nominee would making the Dem's job much easier. You think Lying Donnie Sexual Abuser has gained any support in the almost eight years since he lost the popular vote by millions to HRC and Choir Boy Joe? To the contrary, millions of normal Repubs have sickened and tired of him. Lying Donnie Sexual Abuser is a sinking ship. Which means the Repub party will probably go with him.

From what I saw I can see why Haley gained ground. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would be more inclined to vote for DeSantis after that, unless anger and owning the libs are qualities they prefer in a candidate.

Biden is a good President. Stop
By what measure? Dead serious. Because no one actually thinks that. Well except for hardcore leftists that is.

Its just like the 35% that thinks we should reelect Trump.

According to Gallup, 55% of this country thinks he has done a poor job.

The dems will win in a landslide. Mark my words. People are freaking livid.
I think you overread the importance of abortion in 2024. Not true in 2022 I'll grant you but I don't think this issue defines voter's choice in 2024. Just my take.

I think Nikki Haley answered this the best. There is no sense in moving towards a national piece of legislation. The high court has put this in the state's hands where it should be IMO. There is just as much a chance of getting a piece of legislation to support choice as to nationally restrict abortions. People in different parts of the country feel differently about this.

I f the Rs nominate Trump I agree. But if we on the right could manage to get a Tim Scott, Nikki Haley or Vivek Ramaswamy on the top of the ticket I think we'd have a better chance. And in that order.

Well, this gal apparently wants to keep it as a major issue in ‘24, and if they do, they lose.

Think about it - six of eight candidates on the stage last night said they would support Trump as the nominee even if he's convicted of a felony! Ironically, these same people wouldn't support Joe Blow for county dogcatcher if they knew he was a felon. Sadly, this is today's Republican Party.
