I remember the night of 32. Basically when I started paying attention. Can’t recall the number, but saw the 3/18/09 goal that was just as good imo

Yeah, would say so for sure. I'm shocked, I would have never thought that record could be touched.
Jagr was 45 when he retired. I guess it depends if his body and what performance level he's willing to put up with.

Yeah, I would have said no before 50 goals last year. That makes it seem way more doable. He needs to average like 28 goals for four more years. He's already got 20 I think this year. If he puts up another 40+ spot this year, it will be all but inevitable.

Gretzky's career points record, on the other hand, may in fact be untouchable. Just a mind boggling number.

Had an interesting side discussion the other day. Interestingly, Ovi probably doesn't make the top 5 of all time despite his truly mind boggling consistency (the only things that have stopped him from 40 goal seasons have basically been labor stoppages and Dale Hunter). Obviously, Orr, Gretzky, Howe, and Lemieux are on that list. But then you think of guys like Larry Robinson, Messier, Richard, Jagr, Brett Hull, and even Crosby could arguably be that fifth guy. And that is not even considering any goalies.

Ovi has missed 17 games due to injury over a thousand plus game career which is almost unfathomable. When you see him up close, what really stands out is how damned "thick" the guy is.

he's on pace for 50+.

Of his 18 years:
1. This year he's on pace for 50+
2. Of the remaining 17, he's had 40+ in 12 of those years, with an average in those 12 years of 50+!
3. Of the remaining 5 years:
a. Two featured labor stoppages
b. One he was coached by dale hunter who thought it would be a neat idea to get him to play defense and right wing
c. All of them are over 20

Short of catastrophic injury, he'll catch Gretzky a year before his contract expires. The other night I laughed when PK Subban suggested 1000 was possible. I doubt he'd want to play that long but Subban might well have been right.

I was going to say Hank Aaron. Then I google searched a few "greatest baseball player" lists and saw that he's ranked in the top five in a lot of lists.

Which is kind of interesting, as when I was growing up in the 1980s, Hank Aaron would almost never appear in the top 5, which would usually be some variation of Willy Mayes, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, and then either Mantle, DiMaggio, or some other old old timer like Tris Speaker or something.

Hank Aaron was respected as a great player, but NEVER in a top 5, Mount Rushmore level. It's odd that he would move up given 40 more years of ballplayers.

I wonder if it's a combination of:

- backlash of the Barry Bonds steroid era, and the fact that hatred for Bonds elevated the appeal of Hank Aaron.

- fewer people making these lists have the experience of the "eye test" factor. Aaron has great numbers, and great consistency, but was probably at no year in his career the most exciting and compelling player in the game. I'm sure that affected people who were talking about guys like Aaron, Mantle, DiMaggio, Musial, the latter three that won multiple MVP awards to Aaron's one, with the benefit of having watched their careers.

I mean, as great a player as Ovechkin is, and he's great, from the eye test, he's just not in the same building as Gretzky and Lemieux. But maybe 50 years from now when few remember seeing them play, people will look at the numbers and consider him a top 2-3 player.

Interesting re: Aaron. The only thing I will say about Gretzky and Lemieux in Ovi's defense is that they played in a somewhat more "defense-optional" era. But still, they were both, definitely, more complete players than Ovi, even though i think Ovi is actually a little unfairly viewed as one dimensional.

A week or two ago I picked up tix for 12/19 v Detroit. Hoping to see him catch or pass mr hockey against the wings, but I fear last night put him a bit ahead of schedule with Dallas and Toronto still this week.
All I know is his wife is smoking hot.

I'm not so sure it's a lock for him to catch Gretzky. When goal scorers get to the end of their careers it's like running in to a wall. I could see him drop to 15 a season in 2 years. He still has a long way to go.

Yep, that's why I would have never imagined that Gretzky could be caught by a modern player. He was the greatest, but even Gretzky wouldn't be Gretzky today.

And it's not just the defense, looking at 1980s goaltending is hilarious. As much as defensive principles changed the game, to me the goaltending is the most radical change.

The goal at :30 here...LOL

Of course you could go round and round with that argument...guys in the 80s didn't Ovechkin's lighter sticks with more curvature, the nutrition, the access to analytics and video, etc.
