One bad ref...

The officiating is very difficult to deal with. They are consistently bad in this dual tournament.

And all last weekend they said I was that guy! We try hard, you know. Get on the mat sometime, and see how it goes. By the way, this was my first folkstyle tournament in 35 years. Everywhere I know of is in desperate need of officials. So lots of room for you all to get the work in and see if you are as good as you think you are! By the way, I do agree about Angel.

In Illinois they had a coaches meeting before our first tourney and told the coaches that at least one or more coaches on the staff should be a registered official. They say the shortage is so big that the sport may be injeopardcy because they cannot get enough officials. It may come down to arriving at a tourney and having the coaches officiate. They may not be perfect, but I have been trying to cut them some slack.

we are close to that. obviously not ideal situation there. As far as I am concerned, we have to tools at hand already to mostly eliminate the abuse from coaches. We, as officials, just can't be hesitant to use them. At my age, I am too old and cranky to listen to someone scream at me about either a rule they don't know, or about something that most of the time they have no angle to see. The first coach misconduct is a freebie-but it is allowable to give 2 during the same "discussion". Schools won't tolerate coaches that arent allowed by state rules to coach due to ejections for very long. I had to give one warning at that 2 day tournament-it got out very quickly that I had low tolerance. But, i also had some long discussions post match, and admitted that "gasp" I may have missed some too, or maybe I saw something differently. But none of those discussions involved yelling and screaming

Too many officials have given up their authority due to being worried about being hired for the next year. It needs to be enforced just like other sports-if you let the coaches get out of control, you wont get hired for the big shows-regionals and state tournament. (or in college, conference tourneys and nationals). That will take care of most of in imo.

It is rampant in ALL sports. You think the refs suck, HELP the sport, pay your membership and grab a whistle!! Trying reffing a high school match! You will see why. MOST officials quit after 2 years. (NFHS over 60% of new officials do not make it past 2. years. #1 complaint parent abuse #2 complaint coaching abuse)

I reffed the past 3 years. Taking this year off due to time constraints. It is rewarding and the kids are great. 99% of the parents are great. The coaches that didn't know the rules, yelled the loudest and were the most confrontational.

Been thrown out a few times for "calling the match"--AKA pointing out what the ref missed or was inconsistent about calls. A God complex at work wont allow that. The worst was a kid being choked out by illegal headlock...kid was pointing to it until he went limp. Ref was on wrong side and did nothing so I ran onto mat screaming when he went limp. I was ejected. I spoke with him after and he was apologetic when I pulled up video and reminded him that safety was first priority. That was the exception. Most were arrogant.

The worst moment for me..
It was the semis, U13 ķids. I was looking forward to this match. Kid hits a great Peterson for 2 and 2 at the end of the 1rst. The coach/dad goes apeshit. I start the 2nd period and he is still flipping out calling me every name in the book. When action stops in the 2nd. I walk over to him and tell him one more derogatory word and I will have him removed. I blow the whistle, he yells Hey ref you're a Bitch!
Security removed him. He waited outside for me to come out for over an hour.

And then?????

I hate sore losers but not as much as dads (and moms ) re-living their life through their middle/high school kids mat wins.
He ended up leaving.

It was so silly his talented son was only down 2 going into the 2nd and he had the first takedown.🤷‍♂️

How much does a ref get paid in Iowa? All day Saturday tournament? Dual? It's not enough whatever it is
