I want to preface this with the fact that I haven't bothered to sift through EVERY SINGLE ONE of the hundreds of individuals threads and thousands of posts, by now, talking about whether Fran will be fired and why he will or won't...........
But one reason I think Iowa might choose to let Fran stay, that people are failing to really talk about..................is whether or not Iowa feels they can get the head coach THEY would want if they do let Fran go.
I guarantee you Iowa is not going to just blindly fire Fran and open the door for any and all takers, with the hopes they can land their guy, but are fine if they have to settle for their 8th, 9th, or even 20th option.
No, I think Iowa already has a short list of coaches they want to go after, and if they don't think they can land them, either because they just recently took new jobs like in the case of DeVries, or because they feel that other schools will outbid them, as potentially could be the case for a coach like McCollum and the growing interest that Indiana has in him.........then I don't believe Iowa will just move on from Fran simply to give anyone else a chance.
If Iowa doesn't think they can land the coach they probably already have their sights on, why would they and why SHOULD they get rid of Fran?
P.S. and I will remain on record as saying that I want Fran gone, but I am looking at this from the University's/AD's perspective and what they're gonna potentially do.
This isn't just a "fear of the next coach being Todd Lickliter". The last thing the University wants to do is let go of Fran after 15 years just to settle and bring in a "bridge" coach.
And you can say "well do everything you can to lock up your guy. Don't let an Indiana buy out McCollum if that's who we want". But unfortunately the world doesn't work that way, and especially in Iowa's case, history tells us we don't always get what we want no matter how hard we try or how much we want it.
Just sayin.
