One Upset Victory from Big Ten Championship

Iowa wrestled very well.

They are a lot closer to a National Title than it seemed earlier this year.

All 10 guys are in. The Title is there for the taking!!!!

I love the black and gold optimism, but you’re reaching my friend. Iowa scored a decent amount of points on Med Def (Assad’s 7th place match, JWar’s 5th place and Murin’s consi-semi) which is the same as a pin. Dudes don’t tend to default in the finals, which is where more than half the Nittany Lions were wrestling on Sunday night. The 12.5 points Iowa lost by is likely going to double at Nationals. RBY, Brooks, Star and Kerk are all likely finalists again with Haines demonstrating he can get there too. Iowa probably drops from 3 finalists to 2. PK wrestled tough as nails, but he’s probably the 5th best guy at his weight. I think it’s another blowout win for PSU and a dog fight for 2nd between Iowa and Missouri. I’m excited to see Spencer go for 4 and Woods for his first. Max Murin has his best shot at the podium, with Gomez being out. He helped himself out with that 3rd place finish and he already has multiple wins over Blockus. We should get Cass on the podium and maybe a couple others surprise, but 5-7AAs with 2 champs likely isn’t going to be enough unfortunately.

At nationals there's a lot more drama. I think Iowa State could make some noise at a few weights ... along with Mizzou and AZ state.

I confess that saying the title is 'there for taking' is too much of a homer comment .... However, if there are few upsets and Iowa wrestles like they are capable of wrestling, Iowa may stun the college wrestling scene. I think it's very possible Iowa could be National Champs.

Especially, being Spencer's senior year I hope we get some help from Divine Providence!

Not many likely scenarios to the prize. But if Assad and JWar are able to wrestle through whatever it is, Cobe and NB pull some surprises and the rest just wrestle to their ability we are definitely in the running. There will be some head to heads we will need against PSU like Murin, PK and Cass.

We have a chance. If the scenario played out a thousand times, I believe we would win once.

Anything can happen. Look at last season. In the summer I was hoping we'd have a chance at the scoring record. By January over half the team was injured beyond season repair.

For reference (not a prediction) last year PSU was -2.5 against Michigan at B1Gs, and +36.5 at NCAAs. +25 might be on the low end of the spread, but we know crazy stuff can happen.

The nature of the NCAA wrestling tournament will favor certain teams. I think some guy posted something on the Penn State board stat wise about the tournament, they said he doesn’t post much, but it was pretty interesting explaining the stats.

So we’re going with the Avengers vs Thanos scenario? Alright I’m back on board, Hawks for the win!!!

There was some guy in the Penn State board that likes to post stats every year and that’s literally what he put the odds that about 0.1%..
It’s why we play the games. Obviously with wrestling in the nature of a tournament it’s harder to make up ground because we have 40 to 50 individual athletic events maybe per team and it’s hard to dominate them enough and have luck go your way with favorable opponents, dominate your closest opponent.
But you never know? In 2021, Penn State finished a somewhat distant second, I think I forgot to finals in one. I think it be a great showing for Iowa. If they had two finalist win, maybe they get lucky with cass also it heavy and have three final wins.
I personally look at two NCAA championship wins and respond mount of all Americans in second place finish has a great season for iowa with this year.

For the record AZ state finished 4th in the PAC-12…………..out of 6 teams. I don’t foresee them making much noise.
