Onside Kicks

I was at the game and it was hard to see the replay, but it appeared on the only Iowa player who stayed home was Falconer who recovered it. Nice work by the true freshman.

On the second one, we thought maybe they could move up the second line a few yards to help cover but didn't realize how much ground Hillyer could cover. :)

Under the old rules (where the kickoff team can block a receiver before they have a chance to catch the ball) we might not recover.

Thankfully it didn't work, but I thought it was a gutsy call by the Terps. It was one heads up player away from working.

Good point, OP. Great plays on the onside kicks. These are the kind of play that tend to go unmentioned unless the receiving team botches them. Hats off to the kick-receive team for stepping up and making plays to keep the Terps at bay.

I thought that play by Falconer was the play of the game! Momentum was turning and it was obvious Iowa's offense wasn't going to be able to score again in the game. His heads up play got us 3 points and put us up by the ever important 3 scores.

Falconer made that play all on his own, and it was a ho-hum GREAT PLAY as it turned out. Darn good kick by Maryland too. I do think Iowa was "on alert" in that situation, but we know that doesn't mean much typically............

Nice play by Hillyer as well.

Onside Kicks 0 - Iowa 2

That's a helluva day!

It would be interesting to know why special teams play has stepped up this year, compared to last year. Is it more veteran players on ST, is it coaching, is it winning puts more pressure on players to stay focused, is it player leadership, is it coaches putting in the best players for each position (such as King on punt and kick off return), or is it plain luck?

He was the only one that stayed home which is surprising because my first thought was they have nothing to lose and high probability of an onside kick. Guy in middle of field bailed before ball was kicked.

A lot of the credit goes to Seth Wallace. He has implemented a lot of changes including the new punt.
