I'll admit, I was pretty sure this was a joke thread, but maybe these guys are serious? Tickets are stupid expensive, but the crowd still pulls through fine. The NEZ remodel went a long way in that regard.
I did notice the band playing bad tunes from the 80s', but at least they are not playing Hey Jude anymore since the old fart director retired. I can just see all the band parents heads spinning right now. Not the kid's fault the director picks shitty tunes.
I'm surprised you heard the band play anything. They have the PA run nonstop these days and shove the band further and further into the periphery.

Yes, the HMB, as well as most bands-and most radio stations!- are playing the same songs they have for decades. I'm sure you can deduce why. Also new music is not written in a way that translates to a band arrangement. When marching bands have tried to play some newer hits, they tend not to work. It's an instrumentation/balance thing.

Hey Jude was on its way out over a decade before LKK was, just so you know.
And they let the band wear shorts and t-shirts.
They've done that for years, too. It's a godsend vs wearing those wool blankets they call uniforms.
Hey Jude was overdue to go. But it had less to do with the age of the director than the quality. The band sagged under Kastens. He was overdue to go. The music department has made some questionable hires too...they just don't get fixed as quickly because there are no Ws and Ls to track. The band had its version of Bob Stoops that was passed over about the same time Kirk was hired. He went on to take the job at Indiana and had a stellar career. His name is still on many arrangements the HMB use.
Hey Jude was a blast, but it was for the HMB, not for the crowd. It was fine for the pregame show (why'd they stop that anyway?) and the Extravaganza, but the gameday crowd didn't go for it. Kastens was middling, I must agree. He had strange ideas of what makes a marching band good. But I'd take him over the new guy, personally. I just don't see what he's contributed.

I'm not sure who else you're referring to? Dr. Jones? He lasted a long time and took the HMB to the Sudler, FWIW. The name I always saw on every arrangement was Ken Dye, and he was never at Iowa.
"I'll take bitching about the band as a topic I never thought I'd see discussed on the board for $500 Alex"
This topic is like locusts. Lies dormant for a long time, but it sure as clockwork to arise every so often.

I haven't done a scientific study because, well, a significant number of today's Iowans don't give a damn about facts, but I will say this:
The average age of a Kinnick crowd is well below that of the Hawkeye head coach.

You seem to be in the know...are you a fossil? The guy who should have been hired instead of Kastens was David Woodley. Outstanding arranger, director, leader and all-around person. He excelled at Indiana and sadly passed of cancer recently.

Dr Jones is a legend. Last I knew they still do a pregame show in the Rec Building. Of course they were much better in the Field House when you could get away with a lot more.

Yup! 02-05 here. You?

Love it after a huge play when the crowd cameras find a group of people and half are looking at their phones. Seriously, it's not hard to find a section cheering like crazy after a big play.

I'd worry more about the people with their faces stuck over their phones than anyone else. Always amazes me how people at an event are more interested in what other people are doing.
Why not. The dumb asses can't drive their cars without holding their phones (so they can video chat I guess) since pretty much all cars have bluetooth hookups now so you should be able to talk without holding the phone.

Thought the atmosphere for a non con game was pretty good. Also a 11:00 start

I think if we have a top 50 offense with this defense it will be plenty loud.

Weather plays a factor in the crowd involvement. 84 degrees with no shade and sun on top of you isn't a good combination for a loud environment.

And an opponent like illinois state doesn't excite many people.

It was a geriatric crowd thirty years ago! It's getting too expensive to go to home games and the younger crowd probably stays in the tailgate lots watching, or at home in the air conditioning. Personally, I'm going to watch the game in a garage that has been repurposed into a man cave. The owner's a huge Raiders fan so I will have to hold my nose and my tongue for a few hours. Go Pack Go!
You should feel honored to share in the joy of a Hawkeye victory with a Raider fan. Bow Down.

Wait until there is a rival/conference opponent, IMHO.
Frankly I'm happy that the fans sold out a FCS opponent.

What a coincidence, all the people I know are getting older as well. Weird.
I know people who are not getting older, but can’t say I’ve seen them at the games lately.

Although, I swear I saw Elvis, so there’s that.

Could be legit. I'm getting up there and don't even want to go through the hassle of trying to go to a game in person.

Still some who haven't completely figured out you do need to be quiet when we have the ball and are at the line.
