In 1887, Penn State's school colors were dark pink and black.

Coach James Franklin had a thankful, semi-sarcastic approach to Iowa’s legendary mind game. - PSU newspaper back in 2017

“I’m actually going to talk to our guys about it being a really, really nice gesture by the University of Iowa to welcome Penn State,” Franklin said. “Since our original school colors are pink and black, and how wonderful it is and what a wonderful gesture it is that they painted their locker room pink for us.”

Last year, Iowa hadn't beat Wisconsin, since 2008 at Kinnick. Iowa won 28-7 to close out the 2020 season with six straight wins.

After five straight wins to open 2021, Iowa plays Penn State. The Nittany Lions have won three straight games at Kinnick. The Hawks haven't won, since the 2010 season, when the Hawks had a dominating 24-3 win.

Iowa finally won in Happy Valley last season, 41-21. The Hawks scored 21 points in the 2nd quarter. For the game, they ended the game +3 in turnovers, including two interceptions of Penn State's QB, but that was last season.

“Extremely critical, but it’s critical every single week,” QB Sean Clifford said. “We talk about the turnover battle all the time, so it’s nothing new. I think obviously, [it’s] maybe emphasized because of how well they’ve been doing with 16 turnovers, leading the country. That’s definitely a stat that pops out. But yeah, it doesn’t change our philosophy.”
