There has been an Instagram video making the rounds of a Panthers fan sucker punching an Eagles fan last night. The post states that the Panthers fan and girlfriend were standing the entire game and refusing to sit even though everyone else was sitting in the section. .There are some people saying the Eagles fan says a slur right before he gets punched but I cannot tell for sure so ignore that for this conversation if you can.

I have definitely met and sat near people at Hawk games who have similar stances that they have to stand 100% of the game regardless of what everyone else is doing. In fact, at the Rose Bowl (sorry for bringing it up) I was sitting behind 2 or 3 Hawk fans who refused to sit even after it was a huge blowout. Their justification was "I have season tickets for the Hawks and I haven't sat down in Kinnick in 10 years." Eventually, the people directly behind and these guys got into a verbal altercation and the standers moved to a different section before it progressed any further.

Anyway, curious to see how people view this: whether it is your right to stand regardless of the people behind you, whether you are similar and refuse to sit, etc. etc.

Here is the video, warning there is some blood, violence, and possibly a slur/bad language:

Edit: Here is a link to another source in case WaPo is blocked. SI does say a slur was said but I'm not looking to start an argument on whether the punch is justified if that's the case. Just curious how people view the sit/stand situation!

They were both Panthers fans. The POS who threw the punches has been identified and will probably be arrested soon.

Unless you're in the student section sit your ass down. Standing for big plays is fine.

There's no argument about the punch. It's not justified and I hope that POS is arrested and charged with assault.

As to the sitting/standing discussion, I rarely attend games in person these days.
If my entire section is standing, I'm all for it. If most are seated, I'll typically only stand for 3rd/4th downs/big plays.

I would love to stand the entire time, but I try to be cognizant and respectful of others around me.

Yep. I won't go to NFL games anymore. Experience doesn't justify the cheddar it costs.
Yeah I've never been to one. Bears tickets are stupid expensive even when they usually suck. Only time tickets price drop is for games with absolutely awful weather.

My bad, I had seen it reported somewhere that he was an Eagles fan.

The young kid is a POS. I'm sure even if the 62 year old wanted to stand the whole game, he couldn't. He couldn't even stand up to defend himself.

Don't wast your money. Especially if you're wearing hat/shirt/etc. of the visiting team. You'll get all kinds of crap yelled at you.

I'll adapt to my surroundings. Section stands = I stand. My bigger gripe would be Carver. If you're in one of the good sections, many of the folks don't stand up unless they're heading to the exits. I've felt bad standing up and cheering down there before.

I stand at games. I paid for my ticket and it's my choice.

Don't like it? Tough luck. I'm not moving from the seat I paid for.

That's why I don't like going to Carver for basketball. You feel like you're in a library. The old blue-haired season ticket holders will bitch about you even making noise during the game, let alone standing up.

You never sit down? If I were the only person standing I guess I would feel a little embarrassed. Do you feel you are helping the team and/or the environment or is it a comfort thing? Do you stand all game watching at home? Not trying to flame, I just want to understand your thinking.

Been to one seahawk game...fans in my area were generally classless pukes but maybe that's just seahawk fans in general....won't head back anytime soon.

Just have no idea what has happened to people nowadays. Its a f'ing sport people! I realise that people have there allegiance to a certain team but if you get that worked up over grown men playing a kids game you got deeper issues.
Its crap like this that has turned me off more and more from watching sports. Its all about money now and people take it waaayyyy to serious.

My thoughts:
  • If he'll hit an older gentleman like that, he'll beat the shit out of the girl he's with. Run honey run, you're gonna be next.
  • Crimes like that demand jail time. At least 60 days to humiliate him and screw up his life enough for him to take personal inventory.
  • The old boy who got hit can flat take a punch!!!! Prone to cutting, but man, he can take a hit.
  • Maybe the punk didn't have much power and perhaps that little bitch he was with abuses him.
  • Pathetic behavior. Just disgusting.

My, you're quite a man!!! And I'll bet you demand people to respect you since you appear to have no concept of courtesy or kindness.

I hope you're a troll. If not good luck to you in life and God bless those with whom you deal daily.

PS. You pass on yellow lines too right?

It was bad enough to hit him once but he thought it was necessary to hit him several times. Wish someone would have clocked that punk a good one. He would have never done it to someone his own size..and age

If that's not a punchable face I don't know what is.

That dude wouldn't of been able to walk out of that stadium if he punched my Dad like that. Some people just need to be given some of the medicine they dish out. I'm not one to start fights but have no problem defending myself or family should the need arise. That video is just terrible to watch.

One Seahawks game I was at a guy literally fell on top of me from the row above because he was so drunk he couldn’t get to his seats. Hurt my neck because I was seated and he literally fell on my head. Could have been very dangerous for him and me.

You should have sued him, and I'm totally serious.

This assailant needs to be arrested and serve time in jail and be put into anger management classes. I also hope the man who got punched files a criminal suit against the assailant and gets a big settlement.

That being said here is my take on the standing issue

1) A seat is called a seat for a reason otherwise it would be called SRO or standing. The majority of a game should be spent doing just that sitting allowing for others to enjoy the game behind you.

2) Of course there are times when standing is appropriate maybe on a big third down or big play or when the team comes on the field or when during the action there is a big play in progress at the other end of your sight line. I would guess however that's really less than 20% of the time.

3) Common courtesy dictates that you allow others to enjoy the game ... almost always people will accommodate you if you feel the need to stand but do not ask someone to stand the whole game that's just being rude. Just purchasing a ticket does not give you the right to be rude.

Extra Bonus:

* coming in late to the game and during the kickoff if very rude as well. Walking in front of the row to go to the restroom or get a snack during live action is rude as well ... wait for a timeout...

I was blessed with virtually no temper. I think with great clarity in crisis situations. About the only thing that sets me off is rudeness (and sometimes arrogance). I basically come unglued.

I'm with you 100% on what you have stated Nile. Nicely done.

Anyone who has been to Carver knows that is a gross exaggeration.
