"More than 30 black football players at the school, known as Mizzou, announced on social media Saturday night that they would boycott games and practice unless President Tim Wolfe resigns or is fired over accusations he mishandled racial issues on campus. On Sunday, the athletic department, made up of university employees, issued a statement saying it supports the players’ actions"

If the President doesn't resign, I doubt they will be able to field a team next Saturday. Or maybe some type of arrangement can be agreed upon within the next few days? Sounds kind of dicey.

Anyone close to the action?

Not sure how you call for the university presidents job over statements that may or may not have been made by students at the university. The "riot" mentality is what makes the university "unsafe", not the alledged comments that may have been made by some foolish subjects. The list of "demands" are ridiculous and shows an unwillingness to come to a peaceful compromise. This group has an opportunity to sit down and work this out, hopefully they take advantage of it or they should start looking for a new place to go to school.

Well that is what is curious. According to the Wall Street Journal article, the Athletic Department supports the football players. Also, there is a photo of HC Gary Pinkel standing arm-in-arm with the players. Seems like there is more to the story.

This seems so ridiculous. The President is calling for dialogue to work through the concerns and the group of players wants his firing.

Meanwhile Pinkel, seeing his own interests in play, sides with the extremism, because he needs the players to be successful on game day. Grow a spine Pinkel.

This smacks of the Black Lives Matters movement. And most people are well aware of their extremist views and falsely created narratives.

I say go ahead and boycott, lose your scholarships and move on.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/08/us/missouri-football-players-protest/index.html

"About 30 players made their thoughts known Saturday night in a tweet posted by Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians."

"The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe "Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere," read the tweet."

"Later, a group of African-American students complained that a school safety officer didn't more aggressively pursue an apparently drunken white student who disrupted their gathering and used a racial slur in addressing them."

"African-American students then disrupted the school's homecoming parade on October 10, blocking Wolfe's car in a protest calling for greater action on the part of administrators. They accused Wolfe of looking on impassively and said his car struck one of the protesters. No one was injured, but protesters accused police of using excessive force to disperse protesters."

"Head football coach Gary Pinkel seemed to be more direct, tweeting a photo Sunday of dozens of white and black students standing arm in arm with the message, "The Mizzou Family stands as one. We are united. We are behind our players."

This is ridiculous. There is no proof the people that made those racist statements even went to the school. Maybe the President could have tried to hear the concerns a little better, but to be expected to resign over the matter is pretty extreme. How is the President supposed to address issues of people calling others derogatory words and their are no names being given?

So how does one get "racially abused"? If the cop didn't take enough action against the drunk student just look a few hours away for your reason... cops hands are tied, I doubt we see "aggressive" policing much anymore.

There will be more complaints of lack of action..

They're holding out because of the amount of blatant racism on campus and the administration not really doing anything about it. The president has had a few "this is not my problem" comments towards it all.

Btw, the president said he is not resigning. Good for him. These bully tactics are stupid and need to be stood up to

I remember events at the U of I in 2000 when racist e-mails were being distributed. They later discovered that the person doing the acts was a female black student. She was charged in the case.

That case illustrated the need for everyone to proceed cautiously and rationally.

It seems that the issue must be long-standing and deep, beyond the recent incident. The CNN article you linked makes it pretty clear that the President is on the defensive:

"Wolfe later apologized"; and

"in his response Sunday, Wolfe said that many of the student group's demands are already under consideration"; and

"It is clear to all of us that change is needed, and we appreciate the thoughtfulness and passion which have gone into the sharing of concerns," his statement said. "My administration has been meeting around the clock and has been doing a tremendous amount of reflection on how to address these complex matters."

Looks like he is desperately seeking a compromise of some kind to avoid an escalation which would surely threaten his job. The Athletic Department is in open revolt.

The students, and anybody else for that matter, have every right to protest in any legal way they see fit. However, if the students on scholarship to play football refuse to play football, I believe their scholarships should be revoked. I would like to hear the argument of those that disagree with this, as I'd truly like to understand that way of thinking.

I think he's doing whatever he can to avoid any type of escalation and after seeing his car surrounded by these "students" I can see why he might just be afraid of what they are capable of. The president has reached out only to be slapped in the face by the students demands, sorry but I've never been a fan of those creating a protest\riot when they could peaceable handle the situation. If my kid was on that campus, I would seriously consider getting him out of there, sooner than later.

Well, because somebodies feelings got hurt, so somebody else has to pay with their job (somebody Caucasian preferably, and Male wouldn't hurt either, and for damn sure heterosexual - that should about do it - does the Mizzou President fit the bill?). Ya know, equality and everything.

Ordinarily I would agree with you but the Athletic Department at the University where they play football fully support their boycott.

Because if they don't support it publicly, they will be chastised as being racists themselves. BLM and Sharpton will be there in no time and that is not what Missouri wants.

That's a reach. It appears as though Pinkel is giving approval. But for what reason? His own survival as a coach?

Regardless, you can't convince me that everyone on the team or within the athletic department are on board with this. I expect many are publically saying they are on board for the same reason many often do...the fear of being falsely labeled racist. That fear is palpable and real.

Per the NY Times:
"The Legion of Black Collegians, the black student government, posted a photograph to Twitter on Saturday night of more than 30 football players linked in arms with a graduate student who is staging a hunger strike."

"Sixty of the 124 players on the Missouri football roster are black, although it is not clear whether all of them are participating in the strike, according to The Columbia Missourian, a newspaper published by faculty and students."

northern - fair enough, I might have misread the WSJ article. Just trying to figure out what effect the boycott will have on the football program and, specifically, how it will effect next week's game. I'm not keen on the politics of the situation and don't really care to step into political fights ..... my interest is more practical - how the situation might get resolved, etc.

Since they are boycotting football and they signed a contract to play football then kick there @$$ off of the campus with no food and no place to stay.

I see what you're saying but then what? Forfeit the remainder of the season? Do you take the same punitive action with the coaches and administrators who supported the boycott?

Seems like there would be repercussions, short and long, with any rash actions.

i know nothing about the events leading up to this but a football coach supporting a public demand that the president resign is amazing. it seems one of them has to go. in today's climate i would put my money on the coach winning.

This points, I believe, to a truth: the University needs the black athletes much more than they need the University. Also, programs dominated by black athletes are a major source of revenue for the University.

BLM has created false narratives? Areyou saying they're making stories upabout blacks being choked to death or shot in the back by the police? How easily you dismiss a very real and serious problem within our society, unbelievable.

THIS. The players, students, etc, all involved in the protests are classless low life individuals. The president is not held accountable for the actions of others. PATHETIC. ALL OF THIS

Since they are boycotting football and they signed a contract to play football then kick there @$$ off of the campus with no food and no place to stay.
Then good luck to Missouri getting any athletes ever again. No one would go there knowing the University didn't have their back and is willing to kick them off campus.

I know people here do understand this, but I'll say it anyway. There are more important things in life than football.

I do not know the details of what is going on at Missouri, but these young men have every right to stand up for what they believe in.

God willing there will not be a need to fight against racism someday. In the meantime, minorities will continue to have to band together and stick up for themselves. Some of you seem in denial that discrimination is still a big problem in this country.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Reminds me of Iowa City 1969.
That didn't end well for most of those black athletes in 1969. It was a different era, but if I am remembering correctly only 1 black athlete was let back on Iowa's team that year.

Considering missouri backed out of playing and was to chicken to play Iowa good riddance for what is going on there.

This whole Missouri stuff feels very orchestrated.
Wouldn't surprise me to find George Soros minions and money involved. This is blackmail, pure and simple.
Look at the support agitators and anarchists have been getting in Baltimore, Ferguson and other places, all they way up to POTUS. Remember, George Soros was paying these agitators in Ferguson, and there was news on these agitators upset on not getting paid by one of George Soros organization.

Aren't theses athletes on full scholarships?
If they are, they have contracts with the university, so they either play or they need to figure out a way to pay for their education.

If the blacks on this football team don’t like majority white schools, why don’t they just go to the black colleges?!
You don’t see whites going to black colleges and then crying about racism and demanding that the president be white.

Remember, a white guy was Valedictorian of Morehouse College about 5 years ago, and there were quite a few people there who thought that shouldn’t be allowed.

98% of Americans are living and want to live in a homogeneous society, and the remaining 2% are agitators who like to agitate, because it pays.

Now, Gary Pinkel supports this nonsense?! Fire the coach, kick the agitators off the team and hold tryouts for people who want to play, and transfer scholarships from the agitators to these new tryouts, based on athletic merit.

Btw, the president said he is not resigning. Good for him. These bully tactics are stupid and need to be stood up to
Who is doing bthe bullying?? If president has been non- responsive to racial issues then he is allowing bullying to take place. I only know what I have read but... Discrimination stinks. I have had to deal with it as person with disability and hit sucks and shouldn't be happening

Discrimination is not the presidents fault. Using this logic, Obama should resign, he has not done enough to curb violence in his hometown of Chicago since being elected. This whole mizzou protet is pathetic. Complete rubbish. This is coming from me, a black man.
