COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed eight bouts, earning bonus points in three, to claim a dominant 29-8 win at No. 7 Ohio State in its Big Ten Conference dual opener on Friday night (Jan. 14) at the Covelli Center. The Wolverines have claimed three straight against Ohio State since 2019.
Graduate student Nick Suriano and sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin set the tone with back-to-back major decisions at the lowerweights. Suriano, ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds, stayed unbeaten in a Michigan singlet with an 11-3 win over 18th-ranked Malik Heinselman. He scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and picked up a stall point and riding-time point to secure the bonus win -- his third in three matches this season.
Ragusin, ranked eighth at 133 pounds, defeated Will Betancourt 14-5 with six takedowns, including three in the opening frame to build up a big early lead. Betancourt used an escape and a penalty point early in the third period before Ragusin converted on a go-behind and rode out the match -- earning 4:16 in riding-time advantage -- to re-establish his major-decision margin.
Graduate student Stevan Micic, ranked fourth at 141 pounds, bounced back from last Sunday's loss with a 12-7 decision over No. 21 Dylan D'Emilio. Micic cruised for the bulk of the match, scoring on two single-leg takedowns in the first period and tacking on one apiece in the second and third. Pushing for bonus points late, he gave up a takedown in the final minute but earned a quick reversal to finish the match on top.
Ohio State (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) got on the board with a win at 149 pounds, where junior/sophomore Cole Mattin scored the first takedown and hung close with No. 2 Sammy Sasso but dropped a 9-4 decision. Senior/junior Will Lewan, ranked 15th, scored takedowns late in the first and third periods -- and nearly had another late in the second -- to rally to a 6-3 decision against Jashon Hubbard at 157 pounds.
The Buckeyes picked up their second -- and last -- win after the intermission at 165 pounds as seventh-ranked Carson Kharchla earned a 21-6 technical fall against senior/junior Pat Nolan, who bumped up two weight classes to step in for Michigan after wrestling primarily at 141 pounds this season.
Michigan (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) closed out the dual meet with four straight ranked wins, including back-to-back top-10 matchups at 174 and 184 pounds. Graduate student Logan Massa, ranked sixth at 174, used a huge third period to rally to a 14-8 decision over seventh-ranked Ethan Smith. After giving up a late counter takedown in the second, he claimed his first lead with a single leg with 1:11 remaining, broke it open with four near-fall points off a bow and arrow and rode out the match to accumulate 1:04 in time advantage.
Graduate student Myles Amine, ranked second nationally, converted on an overtime scramble to beat seventh-ranked Kaleb Romero 3-1 at 184 pounds. After two flurries early in the sudden-victory period, Amine used a low leg attack to initiate a third and wrapped up both legs to come out on top with 36 seconds remaining. He improved to 7-0 on the season and owns a pair of top-10 wins.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked eighth at 197 pounds, picked up his second straight ranked win this semester with a 5-2 decision over 20th-ranked Gavin Hoffman -- also his second win over the Buckeye wrestler this season. Brucki struck quickly in the first with a single leg and added another takedown -- a single with a double-leg finish -- with just one second remaining in the second period.
Senior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second, closed out the dual with a first-period pin against 12th-ranked Tate Orndorff in the final bout. Parris finished on a double-leg shot midway through the period and came down with a leg turk, which he used to four count before adjusting to collect the fall at 2:21. Parris owns a 7-0 record with seven bonus wins this season.
Michigan will kick off a three-match homestand with a pair of Crisler Center duals next weekend. The Wolverines host Penn State on Friday (Jan. 21) at 6 p.m., live on Big Ten Network, before welcoming Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 23) at 4 p.m. Tickets are still available for both contests through the U-M Ticket Office.

As the No. 19 Pittsburgh Panthers took on No. 6 Arizona Sun Devils at the Fitzgerald Field House Friday night, the underdogs came out on top.

Pitt had the odds stacked against them from the jump. Referees made a series of questionable calls against the Panthers during Jake Wentzel’s 165 bout that had the Fitz in an uproar. At one point Wentzel was on top working a cradle when he was flagged for stalling.

After the match, head Coach Keith Gavin said he was proud of the match Wentzel had, even with the loss. “I thought he wrestled one of the best matches he’s had all year,” Gavin said. “Sometimes you don’t get rewarded for it but you have to stay the course.”
After Wentzel’s loss, his teammates were out for vengeance. “We were aggressive and really going for the kill tonight,” Gavin said. “This isn’t how we drew it up at all, to get 3 pins and a disqualification, that’s not something we thought would happen.”
Cole Matthews, James Lledo and Nino Bonaccorsi all left the mat with pins. Greg Harvey won after his opponent, Josh Nummer was flagged numerous times for stalling and was ultimately disqualified.
No. 9 Nino Bonoccorsi redeemed himself after a tough loss against Michigan’s Patrick Brucki on Sunday. Bonoccorsi said of the loss, “I think it was a good thing, sometimes I think losses are better than wins, it made me step back and really zone in and work on things I was struggling with.” And he showed that work against ASU’s Jake Ortiz. “Once I got that first take down, I thought, I need to bite down and stick them.”
Bonaccorsi had Ortiz on his back in the first period, a move Gavin said the team was not expecting. “He doesn’t have a whole lot of pins, he’s more of a takedown artist.” Bonaccorsi was able to secure the pin and help the team win the dual.. The final score was Pitt 24, ASU 19.

32 Gage Curry vs. 4 Brandon Courtney
The Sun Devil’s Brandon Courtney wasted no time racking up points with a takedown seconds into the first period. Pitt’s Gage Curry was down 4-1 after the first period. While Curry attempted to recoup the lost points by remaining aggressive in the circle, he found points only in escapes. By the end of the second period, Curry was down 7-2. After taking bottom in the third, Curry was able to score yet another escape, but Courtney continued to own the match in takedowns. Courtney won the match 10-4.

A fairly even match up for Pitt’s Micky Phillippi and ASU’s Michael McGee. A three-minute first period saw nothing but hand fighting. Phillippi chose down in the second and was able to earn one point after an illegal move by McGee. McGee had a questionable take down at the end of the second, which was reviewed by referees before points were awarded. McGee chose bottom in the third, and was able to reverse. To bring the score to 4-2. Gavin challenged a no call on locked hands, which earned McGee a technical violation and awarded Phillippi another point. McGee kept Phillippi’s ankle locked for most of the match, giving Phillippi little room to escape. Final score was 5-3, McGee.
141
22 Cole Matthews vs. Julian Chlebove

Tying up the score with seconds left. Valencia was able to escape and earn another take down bringing the score 6-2, Valencia.

James Lledo vs. Zane Coleman

#4 Eric Schultz (197) then battled #30 Michael Foy in one of six bouts between ranked wrestlers on the night. The wrestlers scrambled before Foy received a stall warning, and Schultz took the match by decision 2-1 to stay undefeated in this season's conference play.

The consensus No. 1 285-pounder in the country, Minnesota heavyweight Gable Steveson, came into tonight's match holding a perfect 36-0 record over the last three seasons. That record remained unblemished tonight after he worked a hard-fought 17-6 major decision over NU's #11 Christian Lance.

Facing his second top 10 opponent in a week, Jeremiah Reno (125) tallied a reversal against #8 Patrick McKee in the first, but McKee held a 5-2 lead after two periods. In the third, McKee recorded an escape and used the riding time point to push past Reno by a final score of 7-2.

The dual continued with 133. Alex Thomsen grappled with #24 Jake Gliva. Thomsen recorded an early takedown, but Gliva responded in the second period with a takedown and four near fall points on his way to an 8-3 decision.

#9 Chad Red Jr. (141) returned to the lineup as he faced #17 Jake Bergeland in the fourth ranked matchup of the night. Red impressed early as he scored a takedown and four near fall points while holding Bergeland scoreless through two periods. Entering the third period, Red led 8-0 and recorded an escape to claim the major decision.

Following Red's victory, the Huskers trailed 16-10 entering #4 Ridge Lovett's bout with #26 Michael Blockhus. Blockhus grabbed the early takedown and held Lovett scoreless through two periods. In the third, Lovett dominated with a reversal and four near fall points to take the 7-2 decision. Lovett is still undefeated in dual competition the last two seasons.

To cap off the night, #5 Peyton Robb (157) took the mat with a chance to win the dual for the Huskers. Robb wrestled #4 Brayton Lee to a scoreless first two periods. In the third, Lee attacked and recorded the first takedown of the match. Lee extended his lead with an escape and used the riding time point to grab the 4-0 decision.

With the loss, the Huskers fall to 3-2 (0-2 Big Ten) and the Gophers improve to 3-2 (2-1 Big Ten).

The Huskers will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Madison, Wisc., to take on the #9 Badgers (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten). The dual will begin at 7 p.m. and can be streamed online via B1G+ (subscription required).

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling got its first Big 12 win in a last-minute scheduled dual against Air Force, 27-11.

COVID protocols postponed the Northern Colorado dual that had been set for tonight for UNI. Air Force invited the Panthers to the Clune Arena in Colorado Springs after USAF also postponed a dual against Utah Valley due to COVID in UV's program. Air Force had been set to compete Saturday.

UNI got bonus points in four matches and won seven of the 10 bouts.

UNI improves to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 duals. Air Force slipped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12.

Kyle Gollhofer, a redshirt freshman, secured his first career dual win to open the match with a 7-2 decision over Quinn Melofchik at 125 pounds. This was Gollhofer's second time in the dual lineup, having made his debut last week against South Dakota State.

Back-to-back, bonus-point wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds got the Panthers out to a 13-0 lead.

Kyle Biscoglia, ranked No. 31 by Intermat, notched his 15th career fall, pinning this week's Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, Sidney Flores in 4 minutes, 58 seconds. Biscoglia is now on a four-match win streak, and 10 of his 12 wins have come with bonus points this season.

At 141 pounds, No. 25 Cael Happel secured riding time heading into the third period and continued to rack up the points against Air Force's Garrett Kuchan. Happel won in a 21-9 major decision.

UNI's Colin Realbuto (149 pounds) got his first Big 12 career dual win with a decision over Dylan Martinez. Realbuto secured riding time in the second period but trailed, 4-2, to start the third. An escape, takedown and more than two minutes of riding time gave Realbuto the 6-4 decision.

UNI extended its lead, 16-0 after four matches.

Air Force got its first win of the dual with a 4-1 decision over Kaleb Olejniczak (UNI), who made his debut in the Panther lineup.

No. 20 Austin Yant was the third Panther to earn bonus points, with a 9-0 major decision over Wilton, Iowa, native Trey Brisker. Yant got an escape in the second period and built a lead in the third with nearfall points and riding time for the win.

At 174 pounds, Dajun Johnson fell behind 12-2 in the first period to the 2021 Junior Pan Am gold medalist Sam Wolf of Air Force. Wolf went on to win by tech fall in 5:43, 18-3. This was Johnson's first time in the lineup at 174 pounds. He's jumped in at 184 pounds three times this year.

No. 4 Parker Keckeisen improved to 13-1 with a major decision over the Falcons' Jake Thompson. Keckeisen notched six takedowns against Thompson for the 14-4 major decision at 184 pounds.

UNI's Noah Glaser jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first period of the 197-pound match. He notched six nearfall points against Kayne Hutchison, who closed the gap with a reversal and two nearfall points. Glaser kept the 8-6 lead and added an escape and two more takedowns to win his first career dual, 15-8.

The Falcons took the final match of the night. UNI heavyweight Tyrell Gordon was edged out by undefeated No. 6 Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson had won his previous 11 matches with bonus points. Gordon broke that streak, but lost in a 9-4 decision.

UNI will open its home dual season hosting in the West Gym next weekend. All home duals are set for 7 p.m.

Wrestling Wins via Tiebreaker at No. 12 Purdue

MSU victorious with 50-49 edge in total match points

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In a battle that saw two bouts go to sudden victory, the Michigan State wrestling team sat tied with No. 12 Purdue after ten matches and had its win come down to a tiebreaker in total match points on Saturday night inside Holloway Gymnasium. With the team score even at 16-16 after the heavyweight bout, the Spartans came away with the 17-16 victory after officials tallied up a 50-49 edge for MSU in match points.

With the win, the Spartans moved to 6-1 in dual overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Boilermakers shifted to 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference duals.

MSU opened the night when freshman Tristan Lujan entered the third period tied at 0-0 with 12th-ranked Devin Schroder, but the Boilermakers' 125-pounder came out victorious with a 3-0 decision. The Spartans countered at 133, as redshirt senior Rayvon Foley picked up a 13-0 major decision over Matt Ramos for his 16th-straight win. Graduate student Matt Santos looked to have a sudden-victory decision in the 144 match, but officials overturned his takedown and Santos was eventually defeated in a 7-5 decision by No. 20 Parker Filius that put MSU in a 6-4 hole in team scoring.

Redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania retook the lead for the Spartans with a 5-2 decision over Alec White in the 149 bout, but Purdue went up 10-9 entering the intermission following No. 10 Kendall Coleman's 10-3 decision over sophomore Chase Saldate at 157. Fellow sophomore Caleb Fish came out of the break by winning a 5-3 sudden-victory decision over 165-pounder Hayden Lohrey and giving MSU another lead, although No. 16 Gerrit Nijenhuis scored an 11-3 major decision over redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez to make the team score 13-10 in Purdue's favor.

At 184, redshirt junior Layne Malczewski got a third-period takedown to get a 4-2 decision against No. 21 Max Lyon, and 197-pound redshirt senior Cameron Caffey followed it up with an 8-1 decision over No. 13 Thomas Penola to put the Spartans ahead, 16-13.

The heavyweight match saw redshirt senior Brad Wilton do just enough hold Michael Woulfe to a 10-4 decision over the MSU wrestler. That bout ended up making the difference in the final score, as another takedown from Woulfe would have flipped the tiebreaker and gave Purdue the conference victory.

In extras action, sophomore Eddie Homrock used a strong first period to knock off Trey Kruse in a 6-2 decision, closing out the evening.

Michigan State continues its road trip on Monday, Jan. 17 with a 3:30 p.m. battle at Indiana, with that match airing on the Big Ten Network.

Bout-By-Bout
125: No. 12 Devin Schroder (PUR) dec. Tristan Lujan (MSU), 3-0

Lujan and Schroder were called for a stalemate in a first period that ended scoreless and the second period went the same, but Schroder got an escape after starting down in the third and defended against a Lujan attack before responding with a takedown of his own. Schroder rode Lujan the rest of the period to earn the 3-0 decision.

133: No. 11 Rayvon Foley (MSU) maj. dec. Matt Ramos (PUR), 13-0
Foley avoided an early Ramos attack and got the Boilermaker on one leg, but Ramos broke free before Foley finally got his takedown near the end of the first period. A second-period escape after going down was followed by another Foley takedown to go up 5-0 entering the third. A two-point near-fall by Foley set him up for a four-point near-pin just a few ticks later, while a penalty point for Ramos' stalling and Foley's riding time gave the Spartan a 13-0 major decision,

141: No. 20 Parker Filius (PUR) dec. Matt Santos (MSU), 7-5 (SV-1)
Santos was able to work out of an attack attempt by Filius, rolling through a takedown of his own in the first period before Filius escaped and got a takedown himself to take a 3-2 lead. Filius escaped quickly in the second frame, but neither was able to convert on an attack the rest of the period. Santos got an escape 57 seconds into the third period and added a takedown, but Filius got the quick escape to tie it at 5-5 before time expired. In the sudden-victory period, Santos had a takedown that was taken off after a Purdue challenge, and Filius got a takedown of his own shortly after the restart for a 7-5 overtime decision.

149: Peyton Omania (MSU) dec. Alec White (PUR), 5-2
Two minutes of grappling in the first period led to White starting down in the second frame. White got the escape 17 seconds into the period and an Omania attack after ended in a stalemate, but Omania was able to land his next attack for a takedown and held White down for another 29 seocnds. In the third, Omania escaped to start after being on the bottom and added another takedown before White escaped, and the two grappled the rest of the way for Omania to earn the 5-2 decision.

157: No. 10 Kendall Coleman (PUR) dec. No. 24 Chase Saldate (MSU), 10-3
Saldate almost had a takedown early, but Coleman had a successful attack with 11 seconds left to grab a 2-0 lead after one period. Coleman then got free after starting down in the second, and neither side could score a takedown in the middle frame. In the third, Saldate escaped quickly but Coleman had a takedown that Saldate escaped from in short order. Coleman had another takedown with about a minute left in the bout, while a Saldate escape was countered by Coleman's fourth takedown, as the riding time gave Coleman a 10-3 decision.

165: Caleb Fish (MSU) dec. Hayden Lohrey (PUR), 5-3 (SV-1)
A back-and-forth opening minute nearly ended with a Fish takedown, but Lohrey held off the attack and later got a penalty point on a Fish stall towards the end of the first period. Fish then escaped in the first couple seconds of the middle period, and resisted a Lohrey attack before time ended in the second frame. A Lohrey escape in the third set up a Fish takedown later on, but Lohrey escaped again to end the period and force sudden victory. In the extra period, Fish finished the bout with a takedown to give himself a 5-3 decision.

174: No. 16 Gerrit Nijenhuis (PUR) maj. dec. Nathan Jimenez (MSU), 11-3
Nijenhuis scored an early takedown over Jimenez, but the MSU wrestler escaped before Nijenhuis took him down again in the opening period and built up 1:25 of riding time. The Boilermaker then got the escape after choosing down in the second and added another takedown following a stalemate to take a 7-1 lead. A Jimenez escape opened the third, Nijenhuis got his fourth takedown before Jimenez got free with a minute left. A stalemate was followed by a stalling call on Jimenez, as that penalty point and a riding time bonus handed Nijenhuis an 11-3 major decision.

184: No. 21 Layne Malczewski (MSU) dec. Max Lyon (PUR), 4-2
The Spartan and Boilermaker grapplers both had shots in during the first, but neither scored a takedown, and Malczewski got the second period escape to go up 1-0 heading into the third frame. Malczewski reversed the riding time in the third before Lyon escaped, but Malczewski got the first takedown of the match in the final minute, as a Lyon escape before the buzzer gave Malczewski the 4-2 decision with riding time.

197: No. 23 Cameron Caffey (MSU) dec. No. 13 Thomas Penola (PUR), 8-1
A scoreless first period put Penola down to start the second frame, who escaped after Caffey built up 27 seconds of riding time. Caffey's takedown in the fourth minute set him up to score a four-point near-fall, and his escape to start the third period gave him a 7-1 edge. Caffey attacked several times in the final two minutes, but could not get another takedown, as riding time handed him an 8-1 decision.

285: Michael Woulfe (PUR) dec. Brad Wilton (MSU), 10-4
Woulfe got the first-period takedown and built his riding time to 1:15 before an out-of-bounds call put the two back in the center where Wilton escaped before the end of the frame. In the second, Woulfe went down to start and escaped 14 ticks in, adding on a takedown right before time expired in the period. The third period started with Wilton down, who got the reversal but Woulfe countered with his own reversal a few seconds later. Wilton escaped, but Woulfe added another takedown and the riding time for a 10-4 decision.

I think at the time Iowa was more interested in Brody Teske (both were 4 Timers that year, Teske in 3A, Thomsen in 1A), and not real sure we had "tremendous" interest in either one (money dependent and returning Starters and such). Teske has proven to be the better collegiate wrestler to this point IMO, but certainly neither was a miss by Iowa.

Could that have changed for either being in the Iowa room? Maybe, but not likely to the point where they are a Gilman, Clark or Ramos, IMO.

Glory 13-6 over Courtney. Glory with TD and 2 backs from a tilt in the first. Courtney chooses down for some odd reason and gives up 4 more tilt points. Courtney got 2 tds in the 3rd.

Did Glory gas in the 3rd to give up those two takedown?

Because that would bode well for Drake.

Saw ISU also lost some match/matches from sickness.

One fan suggested a dual against WSR or SEP. Would the Clones even be favored?

Looking like the fightin Dressers still a joke of a program.
