FOUR TIGERS GET WINS IN DUAL-MATCH OPENER AT INDIANA

Quincy Monday, Blaine Bergey, Nate Dugan and Luke Stout were winners Friday night in the Princeton wrestling team's dual-match opener at Indiana, but early wins for the Hoosiers built a lead that was too much for the Tigers to overcome in a 22-13 Indiana win.

Indiana started with six points on a forfeit win at 125 for Jacob Moran, beginning what became a four-match win streak to build a 16-0 lead. A 12-4 major decision for Henry Porter at 133 followed over Princeton's Sean Pierson fueled by a pair of takedowns in each of the first two periods to put Porter ahead 9-3 after five minutes.

Indiana's No. 32-ranked Cayden Rooks held off Danny Coles at 141, rallying with two third-period takedowns to win 12-9 after Coles led 5-4 one period in and the wrestlers were tied 7-7 after two. Rooks' brother Graham Rooks turned in a 4-1 decision over Tiger rookie Rocco Camillaci at 149, holding Camillaci to a second-period escape while Rooks took the lead on a takedown in that period.

Monday, ranked No. 1 in the nation, got Princeton on the board with an 8-4 win over Derek Gilcher at 157, scoring two first-period takedowns and leading the rest of the way. Bergey followed that with a 3-2 win over Tyler Lillard at 165 to pull Princeton within 16-6, taking the lead on a first-period penalty point and adding an escape in each of the last two periods while Lillard had a point each on an escape and a penalty in the third.

Rookie Kole Mulhauser, joining Camillaci in making his dual-match debut, came up just two points short against Indiana's No. 17-ranked Donnell Washington, who fell to Travis Stefanik at 184 in a wrestleback in last year's NCAA Championships. Washington led 2-1 after a period on a takedown before Mulhauser tied it with a second-period escape. Each had a third-period escape, but a takedown in the final frame for Washington was the difference.

Princeton got back-to-back wins from Dugan at 184 and No. 18-ranked Stout at 197 to pull within 19-13. Dugan had four takedowns during the match to win 12-4 while all four of opponent Drayton Harris's points came on escapes. Stout's win came on a sudden-victory takedown after he and Nick Willham were tied 1-1 after three periods with each getting a point on an escape.

In the final match of the night, Indiana's Jacob Kaminski was a 3-1 winner over Stefanik at heavyweight, getting a first-period takedown and leading the rest of the way.

Princeton will compete again at the Garden State Grapple at the Prudential Center in Newark on Dec. 4 against Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Indiana's write up is a little thin for the winning team.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– Indiana Wrestling earned a huge dual victory in their home opener of the season, defeating No. 23 Princeton, 22-13, on Friday night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The win improves Indiana's record to 2-0 in dual meets this year.

After building a 16-0 lead through the first four bouts, Indiana had to hold on late in the dual as Princeton only trailed 19-13 going into the final match at heavyweight. Freshman Jacob Kaminski fought his way to a 3-1 decision victory to seal the win for the Hoosiers.

The win marked Indiana's first victory over a ranked opponent since beating No. 24 Northwestern, 18-16, on Jan. 30, 2021, in Evanston.

KEY MOMENTS

• Indiana junior Jacob Moran (125) won by default to start the match and put Indiana up 6-0.

• Freshman Henry Porter (133) added on to the lead, defeating Sean Pierson by major decision, 12-4.

• Senior and No. 23 ranked Cayden Rooks (141) won by decision, 12-9, over Danny Coles.

• Redshirt Senior Graham Rooks (149) took care of business over Rocco Camillaci in a 4-1 decision win. The win gave Indiana a 16-0 advantage.

• Redshirt junior Donnell Washington (174) beat Kole Mulhauser via decision, 5-3. This improved Indiana to a 19-6 lead at the time.

• Freshman Jacob Kaminski (285) closed out the night with a dramatic bout over Travis Stefanik winning, 3-1, by decision.

NOTABLES

• Indiana won six of the 10 bouts from the dual.

• Moran, Porter, Graham Rooks, Washington and Kaminski are all still undefeated.

• Every win this season for Porter has been a bonus-point victory.

• This was Indiana's first dual in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since 2010.

• The win also evens the all-time series between Princeton, 1-1. The only other dual meeting between the two programs came on Jan. 9, 1974, when Princeton won, 23-15.

• The match marked the return to Indiana for Princeton associate head coach Joe Dubuque and assistant Nate Jackson. Dubuque was a two-time national champion at Indiana and Jackson was a two-time All-American for the Hoosiers.

Maryland's write up is basically a link to the tweets about the dual and those tweets could be expired with the rest of twitter by Sunday AM, so I included Pitt's write up.

PITTSBURGH—Pitt super senior Nino Bonaccorsi earned the 100th victory of his remarkable college career on Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.

Ranked No. 9 by InterMat at 197 pounds, Bonaccorsi beat No. 13 Jaxon Smith by 8-2 decision with a trademark attacking performance with mat control throughout. Bonaccorsi's improved his career record in college wrestling matches to 100-25.

However, the No. 17 Pitt wrestling team dropped an 18-16 decision to visiting Maryland. The Terrapins (4-0) earned the win thanks to a pin by No. 26 Braxton Brown at 125 pounds and secured victory in come-from-behind fashion by taking the heavyweight bout thanks to No. 28 Jaron Smith.

Also winning matches for the Panthers were No. 8 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds, No. 1 Cole Matthews at 141, No. 14 Holden Heller by major decision at 165 and No. 24 Reece Heller at 184.

Close defeats at 157 and 174 pounds were also vital in the dual, including a takedown by Pitt's Luca Augustine at 174 that was controversially overturned upon review before No. 32 Dominic Solis won the match in sudden-victory overtime.

"It was a disappointing night," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "To start out with a pin for them at 125, that was a huge swing. I told Colton after he looked really good, but he has to be ready for that roll. Hopefully he stays positive because he was wrestling very well before that moment. But that was huge. The match at 157 was a big one too."

"There we some good performances, too," Gavin added. "The Heller brothers both looked great. Nino, too. But overall, we need to see a little more offense and scoring across the 10 weight classes."

Full results from Friday's dual are available below.

Pitt has a chance to respond immediately tomorrow with a 7 p.m. home dual with No. 13 Lehigh.

Saturday's dual with Lehigh – the 67th all-time wrestling matchup between the Panthers and Mountain Hawks – will serve as Pitt's Hall of Fame Recognition Night. Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro, a national champion during his career wrestling for the Panthers, and late great Pitt head coach Rande Stottlemyer will be honored as Class of 2022 inductees into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame.

Fans coming from Pitt's home football game on Saturday against Duke can also attain free admission to Saturday's wrestling match with Lehigh by showing their ticket from Acrisure Stadium.

Redshirt junior Danny Braunagel pinned Noah Grover (Buffalo) in the 165 pound bout at 4:42. Redshirt senior Matt Wroblewski picked up a bonus point for the Illini when he major decisioned (10-2) Greg Hodulick.

The Illini trailed NC State 0-3 early, but redshirt sophomore Lucas Byrd pinned Troy Hohman (4:34) to give them a 6-3 edge. The Illini lost the next three bouts before Danny Braunagel and redshirt sophomore Edmond Ruth rattled off back-to-back wins to keep them in it 12-15. That is as close as the Illini would get.

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team jumped out to an early lead and rode the momentum to a dominating 34-3 win over Wyoming in its home opener in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night.

The Cowboys took an early 9-0 lead behind a hard-fought 2-0 decision from Trevor Mastrogiovanni over Wyoming freshman Jore Volk, who won a U20 world championship in freestyle this summer. Following Mastrogiovanni, Daton Fix collected his 75th career win in style with a first-period fall over Aidan Noonan to extend the OSU lead to 9-0.

The only win of the night for Wyoming came in a close match at 141 pounds where Job Greenwood fought off a late shot from Carter Young to clinch a 4-3 decision.

From there, the rout was on for No. 10 Oklahoma State as it won the final seven matches to close out the dual. Wyatt Sheets won the lone ranked matchup of the night, defeating No. 21 Cole Moody, 6-2. After a scoreless first period, Moody took a 2-0 lead in the second period behind two stall calls against Sheets and an escape, but Sheets responded with a late takedown to send the match to the third period tied at two. The 16th-ranked Cowboy used an escape, takedown and ride out in the final period to secure his third victory of the season and 75th win of his career.

Luke Surber and Dustin Plott each picked up bonus-point wins in their matches. At 174 pounds, Plott recorded a pair of takedowns in both of the first two period before putting up seven points in the third period on his way to a 16-6 major decision over Brett McIntosh. Surber just needed one takedown and a turn to end his match as he collected his first fall of the season in 1:38 over Tyce Raddon.

Victor Voinovich, Travis Wittlake and Konner Doucet all moved to 3-0 on the season with comfortable decisions over their Cowboy counterparts, while Kaden Gfeller earned his first victory of the season with a 6-3 win over Logan Ours behind a second period that included a reversal and near fall from Gfeller.

"I thought from a team standpoint, it kinds of reminds me of seeing guys getting their season started and finding a rhythm of how you want to wrestle, it takes some matches," head coach John Smith said. "It just seemed like we struggled a little bit with some sort of rhythm, and give credit to Wyoming, (Mark) Branch had his team ready to fight and they did fight. With that comes a few of them where they were satisfied to get a win rather than trying to stretch scores out, continuing to develop their offense in some of these matches."

Oklahoma State's next match will be on Dec. 4 back in Gallagher-Iba Arena when the Pokes host No. 12 Minnesota.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- No. 14 Wisconsin won the final two matches of the day to break a 13-13 tie and earned six victories from ranked wrestlers to earn a 19-13 win on Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Friedman Wrestling Center. The Badgers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Big Red fell to 0-1 after dropping the opener.

Vito Arujau picked up a huge 17-6 major decision victory at 133 pounds over No. 18 Taylor LaMont and Vince Cornella won his dual debut at 141 pounds over No. 18 Joe Zargo as Cornell bult a 7-3 lead. Unranked Brett Ungar gave No. 9 Erica Barnett all he could handle at 125 before falling 6-5.

In the highlight match of the day, senior Yianni Diakomihalis had his 75-match win streak snapped, losing for just the second time as a collegian after falling to No. 3 Austin Gomez at 149 pounds, 9-3. A big four-point move in the second period put Gomez up 5-0, and the three-time NCAA champion couldn't get anything going to fall to 94-2 in his storied career.

That win gave Wisconsin all the momentum and the Badgers claimed four of the final six matches of the day, including tossups at 197 and 285. Chris Foca and All-American Jonathan Loew picked up victories at 174 and 184 to momentarily tie the dual, but Wisconsin closed by scratching out narrow wins at the final two weights in matchups between ranked grapplers.

PISCATAWAY – No. 21 Rutgers wrestling (3-1, 0-0) defeated RV Stanford (0-1, 0-0), 20-15, on Saturday in Palo Alto, California. The Scarlet Knights won five bouts against the Cardinal outside at Taube Family Tennis Center, which included a pin from No. 15 Brian Soldano (184) and bonus-point wins from Dean Peterson (125) and No. 10 Sammy Alvarez (141).

"I'm proud of the way our guys wrestled today against a really good Stanford team and handled themselves during the first leg of this road trip," said head coach Scott Goodale. "We have another test tomorrow, so we get to see who's up for the challenge. That's what this sport is all about."

Rutgers opened the dual with three consecutive wins, which included a 11-2 major decision from Peterson over No. 30 Nico Provo, a 4-3 win by No. 18 Joe Heilmann (133) against No. 33 Jackson Disario and a dominant 17-6 major decision from Alvarez over Jason Miranda.

Stanford rattled off four straight wins to take its only lead of the dual at 12-11 through 174 pounds, but Soldano all but locked up the dual thanks to his first-period fall of Brooks Byers. Soldano's fourth consecutive bonus-point victory made it 17-12 Scarlet Knights, as a decision from Boone McDermott (HWT) over Seamus O'Malley secured RU's third dual win of the season.

No. 13 Lehigh Falls at No. 17 Pitt as Panthers Rally in Upper Weights

PITTSBURGH – A second period pin by senior Josh Humphreys gave No. 13 Lehigh a 12-6 lead at the halfway point, but No. 17 Pitt won the final five bouts to claim a 22-12 victory over the Mountain Hawks Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House. On a night in which Lehigh wrestlers defeated a pair of top 15-ranked opponents, Pitt had the upper hand in the upper weights to claim the victory.

The loss drops Lehigh to 3-2 on the season, while Pitt improves to 2-1.

The dual began at 125 with first-year Carter Bailey taking on Colton Camacho. Bailey trailed 3-0 after two periods and reversed in the third but could get no closer, as he dropped a 4-2 decision as the Panthers took an early lead.

Sophomore Connor McGonaglefollowed with a strong 5-3 decision over Pitt's eighth-ranked Micky Phillippi at 133. After a scoreless first period, McGonagle rode out the second. He escaped early in the third and added a takedown to go up 3-0. Phillippi responded with an escape and takedown of his own, but after cutting McGonagle loose, could get no closer. McGonagle added the riding time point to deal Phillippi a dual loss to a Lehigh wrestler for the second straight year.

True first-year Owen Reinsel stepped in for sophomore Malyke Hines at 141 and faced the tough task of taking on top-ranked Cole Matthews. Reinsel showed some skill on top, riding out the second period, but ultimately fell 8-2 as Pitt reclaimed a 6-3 advantage.

Sophomore Max Brignola returned to the lineup with a 7-6 decision over Tyler Badgett at 149. Brignola scored the first takedown and added reversals in the second and third periods plus a stalling point.

Humphreys recorded his first fall of the season, pinning 11th-ranked Dazjon Casto in 3:47. Casto scored the first takedown but Humphreys came back late in the first period with a takedown to take a 3-2 lead. In the second, Humphreys worked his way into a reversal and trapped Casto on his back, securing the fall to put Lehigh up 12-6 halfway.

Pitt's comeback began at 165 as Holden Heller defeated junior Brian Meyer 6-0. Luca Augustine then tied the dual at 12-12 with an 11-6 decision over Jake Logan at 174.

The Panthers went in front for good following Reece Heller's 7-6 win over graduate student Tate Samuelson at 184. Heller emerged on top from an upper body position for a takedown and two point near fall to lead 4-1 after one. Samuelson tried to erase a 5-1 deficit in the third with an escape and two takedowns, but it was a late escape by Heller that provided the deciding point.

A top 10 showdown at 197 also went the Panthers' way as ninth-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi won a 10-4 decision over eighth-ranked sophomore Michael Beard. Bonaccorsi racked up four takedowns in the victory, including two in the second period, giving Pitt a six-point lead heading into the final bout.

At 285, first-year Nathan Taylor surrendered an early takedown and never recovered as Pitt's Dayton Pitzer posted a 10-1 major decision to account for the final margin.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 4 when they host top-ranked and defending national champion Penn State at Stabler Arena with match time set for 2 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.

Not only that but I have a feeling they could be dangerous at Big Tens as well.
Other than Sasso not sure they have any legit title threats.
Heinselman- no
Mendez not beating RBY
Decatur no
Sasso will have his hands full with Gomez, Murin and Yahya
Paddy is solid but Brayton Lee, Will Lewan and Peyton Robb are big hills to climb
Kharchla will have his hands full with Amine, Hamiti, and Kennedy
Ethan Smith has a rough road vs Star, Labriola, Nelson Brands and Ruth
Romero hasn’t shown that he has the ability to upset Brooks.
I don’t see Hoffman beating Dean or JWar
Orndorff is maybe the 5th best Heavy in the B10 behind Cass, Kerk, Parris and Davidson.

I don’t see them as much of a threat in a tournament format.

MINNEAPOLIS - After trailing 12-6 at the break, the University of Minnesota wrestling program won four of the last five bouts to down Binghamton by a score of 19-15.

The comeback for the Maroon & Gold was fueled by a pair of debut wins in the second half, as both Troy Spratley and Aaron Nagao earned pivotal wins in their first career starts. The Gophers would finish the dual winning six of ten matches.

"It was a slow start for sure, but I thought the second half of the lineup did a really good job for us," coach Eggum said. "We fell into a little bit of a trap where we had a hard time engaging, and we struggled taking shots from distance and getting into scrambles. The goal is just to get better every week. We did some things well today and there's things we definitely need to work on. We had some guys wrestle well when we needed them, and we'll look to improve in some of these positions as the season rolls on."

The dual would kick off at 165 pounds, as Andrew Sparks opened the dual with a 3-2 decision win over Dimitri Gamkrelidze. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Sparks elected to go neutral and converted a takedown in the final frame to take the decision win.

At 174 pounds, Jared Krattiger would get a decision win of his own, knocking off a ranked foe in No. 33 Brevin Cassella. Krattiger started the match off strong with an opening takedown, which would prove to be the difference in his contest.

"[Krattiger] seemed really focused on this one and he did a really good job of capitalizing on his attacks early. He nearly had a couple more takedowns there late in the period but it's a big win for him, and obviously in the dual it was very important for us," said Coach Eggum.

Following three-straight decision losses to close out the first half, the Gophers decided to run out true freshman Troy Spratley to make his first career start against former NCAA qualifier Micah Roes. Again, it was the Gopher grappler who executed on the feet, as Spratley fired off the opening takedown and didn't look back en route to the 4-3 decision win.

"Spratley has looked great in the room and we know he's going to be a great Gopher for us in the future," coach Eggum said. "To get the chance to come out and wrestle as a redshirt, something that he's able to do this year because of the new rule, he took full advantage of the opportunity so it was exciting for us to see him in the Maroon & Gold."

Aaron Nagao followed that performance up with an impressive debut performance of his own, defeating Binghamton's Ivan Garcia by 8-2 decision. Nagao rattled off a takedown in each period, and tallied well over two minutes of riding time to secure the victory.

"I don't think this was my best, I think I have a lot more to show the fans but I'm happy with the win," Nagao said. "If anything I was excited to go out there and put this guy's head in the mat. I wanted more points and I think I could have gotten to his legs any time I wanted, but I'm happy to get my team's heads back in it and show how dominant we are."

After yet another Gopher debut fell short at 141 pounds in Vance VomBaur's 9-7 decision loss, Michael Blockhus earned himself a 5-3 decision win over Michael Zarif to knot up the dual at 15-15.

That led to a deciding contest at 157 pounds, where fans saw the highly-anticipated season debut for No. 2 Brayton Lee, who rolled to a 14-5 major decision to clinch the dual for the "U".

Lee was firing on all cylinders early and often, securing three takedowns in the opening period and continued to put points on the board with three more takedowns and a riding time point to close out the bonus-point victory.

"The first match of the season, there's always a little bit of nerves but I was excited to go out there and wrestle again," Lee said. "I tried to soften the guy up a little bit in those first couple minutes, and if the opening was there, I was going to take it and not hold anything back."

Following the win, the Gophers will head to 1-0 on the year while Binghamton drops to 0-3 on the season.

The Gophers will now look ahead to South Dakota State, as they will battle the Jackrabbits next Sunday, November 27 inside Frost Arena. Minnesota will then return home to compete against Augustana on Thursday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m.

HUMBOLDT, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State put on a show inside Humboldt High School, the alma mater of head coach Kevin Dresser, blanking NAIA powerhouse Grand View, 40-0. The Cyclones won all 10 matches and earned bonus points in five.

ISU has now won 18 consecutive duals, the fourth-longest streak in school history. The Cyclones snapped Grand View's 116 dual win streak, the longest ever at any level of collegiate wrestling, which began in 2013.

"It felt great to be back in Humboldt," Dresser said. "This place is home and they have always treated me and our program well. We wrestled well but this team has to get better in the next couple of weeks. We're still making technical mistakes that needs to be cleaned up. Our guys had to come out and wrestle as heavy favorites today which can be hard to do when they're coming after you with everything they have."

How it Happened
No. 19 Kysen Terukina started things off with a decision over reigning NAIA national champion Esco Walker, 5-2, at 125 pounds. Terukina notched a pair of takedowns in the match, including one with five seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Ramazan Attasauov made his first appearance in the Iowa State lineup this season at 133 pounds and defeated Grand View's Carson Taylor, 7-3. Attasauov racked up two minutes of riding time in the win.

At 141 pounds, No. 15 Casey Swiderski gave up a first-period takedown to Shea Ruffridge but got stronger as the match went on. The freshman picked up five third-period takedowns in a 14-8 decision for the Cyclones.

No. 11 Paniro Johnson won a tight match over Blake Gonzalez at 149 pounds, recording the only takedown of the match in SV-1 to come out on top, 3-1.

Jason Kraisser and Giovanny Bonilla had several great scrambles throughout their 157-pound bout. Kraisser found himself behind, 2-1, early in the third period but reversed Bonilla to his back for the fall, his second in his last two matches.

Out of the intermission, No. 3 David Carr was dominant in a 17-1 tech fall over Marty Margolis. Carr registered three takedowns and 10 near fall points in the victory, his 13th career tech fall.

No. 25 Julien Broderson kept things rolling at 174 pounds with a 4-2 decision over Isaiah Luellen which included 1:28 of riding time.

At 184 pounds, No. 5 Marcus Coleman picked up his fourth bonus-point victory of the season with a 15-6 major decision over Ben Lee at 184 pounds. Coleman secured six takedowns and 2:15 of riding time in the win.

No. 6 Yonger Bastida continued his strong start to the year at 197 pounds, improving to 5-0 with a 21-8 victory over Garavous Kouekabakilaho.

Sam Schuyler led the afternoon's final match, 4-0, in the third period before Greg Hagan injury defaulted out of the match. Schuyler put together a tough ride, lasting the entire second period, in a solid showing at heavyweight.

Some nits news, following there 44-3 win on raise the banner night, the nits sent a squad with 3 national Champs missing and a soon to be national champ not in the lineup, to the west Point open. They went 5 Champs, 3 seconds, 2 thirds, and a 5th. Starters from 141 to 165 ahem the holes in the lineup were undefeated and yes I'm counting Haines as a starter.

Let's pump the brakes a little bit. The competition was not anywhere near B1G levels (except for Indiana being there FWIW). Had any of these young guys not won, we would have been disappointed as PSU fans. It's not even December yet and neither Iowa nor PSU have faced any tough competition.
Schreiver, Murin, and Assad have looked good. Siebrecht, Kennedy, Warner, and Cass look great. We haven't seen Lee, Woods, Brands, or Swafford yet. Everyone can get excited in November.
Let's see when things get sorted out on January 27th.
