Just saw this on Twitter. I expected the sales to be much higher for this game. 2-0, night, entertaining Iowa team, good opponent... Are people still not buying in on this team?

@ChadLeistikow: Iowa has sold 60,000 tickets as of this morning for Saturday's game vs. Pitt.

I'm not sure what's enticing about trying to walk out of Kinnick and fight traffic at 11pm

IMO It has more to do with other factors than the product on the field.
1. Game Day Costs - We spent $270 for a hotel in Iowa city, 4 tickets were $320, Parking will be $30 minimum, gas will be $75, food will be $200 - Without alcohol it is a $900 weekend!!
2. Length of game - The TV timeouts are killing the game. I went to the Iowa hs playoffs and hs basketball championship weekend for the past 25 years. I didn't go last year, because I can't handle all the breaks. It has totally taken away any flow of the game.
3. Wifi! Let's face it we are married to our phones. No Wifi for 4-5 hours is hard on many people
4. When I can sit in BWW or Sports Bar and watch 5 or 6 games on TV and the Iowa game is right in front of me. I have atmosphere, WIFI, food, bevarage, and during TV timeouts I can scan the other games, etc..

The night atmosphere at Kinnick is like no other. I guess if fighting traffic after the game is enough to keep you away thats up to you but I've never attended an event with crowds -for anything- where there wasn't traffic. Seems like a very odd thing to say.

Take the train, you are on the edge of Coralville so no traffic to worry about.

If you look on the Hawkeye Sports ticket site there are some seats available, but it's going to be pretty full. I don't think it's going to be embarrassing on TV.

This is sad. Should be a great day weather wise and tickets are cheap. No excuse for a primetime night game in Kinnick for this to not be sold out. Team has looked great so far

I just looked too. There are large portions of the end zones and corners that are available for sale. If things don't pick up, there will be some large gaps in the stands. I hate to say it, but it's looking likely that this team, despite their performance and the higher profile game time, will play for a less than full stadium.

And yes, I've already gotten my tickets (3) for this game.

People have spoken. While I agree if the team keeps winning the sell outs will come.

However, certain people seem to have grown tired of the this product. It's so strange to see the UI have to resort to all these little social media posts trying to "win"fans over. I've seen other B1G schools like Illinois and Purdue stoop to that level but I didn't think Iowa would struggle like this without a new coach or many losing seasons.

Times are a changing in Iowa City that's for sure.

Myself and 6 others are going. Sec 107. Wouldnt miss it. $65 for a ticket on the 35 yard line is a steal. I remember paying $125 for one game back in 2006 and that was in the student section. I think it will look pretty full by game time.

I would guess a few thousand more get sold but that it won't be a sellout. I'll guess the announced crowd will be 66,000

For me, it's all about cost. I would love to take my family to the game this Saturday, but at $65 ticket x 5 of us, $325 for tickets alone is a pretty big hit. Not to mention the additional cost of travel, food, etc., it adds up quick. Would love to see the $25 youth ticket option for this game, as that would tip the scales enough for me to buy tickets. And I know that last comment will bring out the "leave the kids at home" crowd. They're 14, 12 and 10, all love going to games at Kinnick and actually pay attention to the game.

1st home night game in a couple years. 2-0 to start the season. Fans will show up Saturday night can't wait. Good to be excited about iowa football again.

I can't fault you for that at all, I have 4 kids. Took my 3 boys to the Il St game and that youth price is very nice.

I am guessing we will see it be a sellout or close to it by game time

That's probably a good bet. My knee jerk reaction is that those who rationalize not going with traffic issues, the coaches suck, the team lacks talent blah blah blah haven't paid attention and frankly ought not be there in the first place. Cost issues are legit, but most of those folks haven't been going to games in years anyway. I know it's only two games in, but I guess I've been heavily influenced by two fake kicks and some solid D this early in the year.

Then again barring a zombie apocalypse I'd still be going so there's that.

It isn't a problem that is specific to only Iowa athletics. This is a trend across the country. People have less discretional income lately, ticket prices are high, and watching at home has become a much better experience.

I know it is hard to devalue a product by lowering ticket prices but I really feel that is the way they need to go. It is generally too expensive for a lot of people to take a family for the game and a night in IC. Couple those things with the product on the field the last 4-5 years and you have what we see now. Actually, with all of these factors in play, Iowa fans are still some of the most loyal out there.

hexumhawk is spot-on here. Economics (including cost of travel / lodging) and alternative viewing options (big screen HDTV, multi-screen sports bars) have eroded game day attendance. This is a national trend and not specific to any one school.

This almost qualifies as old news now. College game day attendance has been down from previous highs for almost a full decade now.

Its not the whole story - disgruntled fans chose not to attend for reasons other than cost - but a significant chunk of the downtrend is attributable to economics (and that is not KF's fault:p)

Well then we should have a vote because it damn well should be his fault. :)

The combination of the high cost, the great TV options, and the legacy of the last 5 years are all very real factors. Given all that, some posters are right that Iowa fans are still among the most loyal anywhere. It's not necessarily germane, but Northwestern had 36,000 for its opener against Stanford, and a pitiful 29,000 last week. Those two "crowds" combined are only a few more than Iowa drew for Illinois State alone.

As I said last year, college remodels in most places should be downsizing significantly. And I know Barta has said he wants the north end zone remodel to keep Kinnick at 70,000 minimum, but that may not be wise...unless ticket prices drop dramatically.

But I'll be there Saturday night, and I hope the place is close to full. It'll be my first night game at Kinnick, and I hope the Iowa Athletic Department makes it enjoyable, but most of all I hope the Hawkeyes do.

Congrats on this. You won't be disappointed if the team comes to play (which I'm confident they will).

I hope each and every person in this thread complaining about the fans are going to be at the game.

I criticize a lot about the fans but never about their attending or not attending the game. My general criticism is on their lack of accurate data when explaining what they are so angry about. :)

'Me' society, basically.....

It's a multi-faceted issue for most.
I did not renew my season tickets this year after many seasons of being at Kinnick.
It was a combination of enjoyment/results, cost and family priorities.

It's a big time and cost investment.
It was mentioned above that tickets are cheap. That's not my opinion for the middle class folks.

All that said, I'd bet it fills up plenty more by Saturday eve.

PS - if I could snag a couple decent $30 tix, I'd be there. At over double that, just cannot jump.

This borders on a personal question, so you may choose not to respond. If you were a season ticket holder until this year, then you're obviously used to dropping some moderate to serious cash on the Hawkeyes every year. If you've reduced your expenses this year by not renewing, I presume you'd be able to afford to go to one of the biggest home games of the year. With the team performing better than they have for most of the past 5 years (up to this point), I would think that covers the "enjoyment/results" issue you had.

Assuming you've not had some sort of catastrophic financial change since last season, why aren't you willing to pay for this game?

Good question. I buy with installment plans, so it makes the money disappear quietly in the night. I'm a cheapskate when I see the larger chunks of cash get dropped at once. Just paid up for bball too.

Also....as of now, no babysitting for the game.

Might wind up there yet....
