Over 10,000 tickets still for sale?

To each their own, extreme situation what if there is a game that impacts whether Iowa makes the championship game or a big upset or ISU with a big win or a big loss, I have an interest.
I find out when I leave the stadium, same as the players and coaches on the field. Finding out 20 min after a game isn't a big deal to me. Those scores aren't changing because derekd3408 couldn't get on his phone during the Iowa game.

Iowa needs a smaller stadium...problem solved...more enthusiasm, looks better on TV, less traffic...

Less tickets can be sold for higher prices...

An exciting product works wonders as well...

An exciting QB is as good as it gets...

It amazes me to see people failing to understand that 7,000+ people dropping season tickets means that attendance will likely be very low throughout the entire season, regardless of team performance.

It's a remarkably simple concept to grasp, yet here we are.

Purchased my ticket! I have a hard time believing there would be more people at an 11AM season opener against an FCS school than a 2-0 team, night game.. Hoping many buy tickets this week!

I think you misunderstood, there are already more than for the FCS team.

Kids happened to me. Was a season ticket holder for a few years and then a 3-game package and now have 3 kids (6, 4, and 1) and I'm just not going to take most of a weekend to leave them. When they get old enough, would love to take the entire family if it were cheaper.

Exact same ages of my 3. I haven't had season tickets before but it's a goal. Wife finally went to her first game for the opener and admitted she enjoyed it. She agreed to the Pitt game and we just plan on scalping all season. Prob cheaper.

I love when some Iowa fans get all riled up and think they are super fans because they are attending the games and for those who don't, well ... you really aren't a true fan and you should feel guilty for not buying tickets and driving to Iowa City.

For starters, yes, this team is 2-0. But let's not forget, this program has been heading south for a few years now. To expect fans to come back in masses after two games is shortsighted.

Yes, one can probably find tickets below face value. That being said, it's still an investment to make the drive.

Technology is indeed changing our world. Our attention spans are shorter. We want our smartphones. Kinnick is way behind the ball and is missing the boat big time by not having a strong wi-fi capability. I went to the Ill State game and texted my partner (also in the stadium) at the beginning of the game and she never got my text. I am still shocked Iowa has not made this a priority. Smartphones are the way of the world now and if people can't text, take and share photos, etc., well, that is a huge turn off for many.

I am proud of this Iowa team and its 2-0 mark. And yes, I attended the Illinois State game (I used to have season tickets for 10 years; ceased at the end of 2012). But, I will never call any Iowa fan out for attending or not attending a game. If I decide to go, that is my choice. Not your choice. If my next door neighbor decides to go, that is his choice, not mine.

So let's climb down off our soapboxes, enjoy the season and let's not try to chastise any Iowa fans for attending/not attending a game.

How the F is no WiFi for 3.5 hours a big deal? Why do people need fricken WiFi at sporting events? Is the game that boring? When I'm at a game I don't even think about my phone until maybe halftime when I check my texts.
Are you serious? Wi-Fi may not big a big deal to you but trust me, for many to go without their Wi-Fi connection for 3+ hours is a huge deal. I work in research and communications. Trust me, I know. Iowa needs to get the Wi-Fi issue fixed now ... not in 2 or 3 years. It's not the only issue keeping fans away, but it is a big one - along with the fact technology is simply changing our worlds in general (Big screen TVs, steaming of games, etc.)

I work in sales, I know. I can go without checking my email/phone for 3.5 hours on Saturday night, thanks. When I am at the game I am not working...and in sales, you are always working. Sorry, this is a sorry excuse to not attend a game b/c there is bad wifi. Give me a break

If you follow guys like Morehouse or Hawkeyegamefilm on twitter, having WIFI at the game is a huge bonus. You can get such great information from them while the game is going on.

It's truly sad that fans can't give up their phones for 3-4 hours to watch the team they (supposedly) love.

I don't think anyone would argue that WiFi would be a huge bonus, however it's ridiculous that a fan wouldn't attend a game because Iowa doesn't have it.

*Ridiculous. It may be ridiculous just for that one thing, but it's more than just 1 thing. There are lots of small things that add up to make the in stadium experience lackluster.

Before you play the card I'm sure is coming, I'll be there Saturday just like I was week 1 and every week before that for the last decade +.

I don't really care if you're going or not. I'm not going to be the guy that bashes anyone not in attendance. If you have multiple reasons for not attending, WiFi being one of them, then so be it. It doesn't really have any effect on me who does and doesn't go to games. If the sole reason for not attending is just WiFi then yes, I think it's ridiculous like you said as well.

We have season tickets and I go to the home games, but the reduction in attendance is complicated. For whatever reason, students don't want to go to the games. When we walk from downtown Iowa City to the stadium the morning of a game, we pass literally thousands of Iowa students, dressed in black and gold, going DOWNTOWN to watch the game. They do that because downtown is a big party where they can watch the game, eat, drink, and hang out. They are Iowa fans and they are behind the team, but the downtown experience is more exciting than being at the game. It is not about Wi-Fi, it is about ALCOHOL. Downtown they can drink, in the stadium they cannot. When I was a student at Iowa, we could drink alcohol IN THE STADIUM. Big difference. Students just aren't going to the games any more in large numbers. That really affects the attendance.

The other season ticket holders not renewing? It's a combination of cost; ease of watching on TV in HD; and the fact that Iowa really hasn't been very good since 2009

this is absolutely right. When I was at Iowa everyone went to the games my freshman year. and by the time i was a junior or senior a good majority of my friends would tailgate on melrose and walk to the bars to watch the game. I will say it can be a blast watching the games at the ped mall. but it is more for the party

They are working on the WiFi issues. Not only the Verizon tower that went but also US Cellular @TheIowaHawkeyes Tweeted a photo of them putting a tower on the side of the press box yesterday.

My wife and a group of others we tailgate with do this. I think they are nuts.

If that Verizon tower was working for the first game it did absolutely nothing for Verizon phones in the West stands.

Already had my tickets, but just got my hotel room for Saturday. Should be a great day.

A stadium can be half full and still look full on TV. Depends on where the gaps are and what the cameras do.
Not if it is Heinz Field. The yellow seats stand out like a sore thumb, and 10,000 empty seats can make the place look half full. We wish we could draw the crowds you guys do on a consistent basis.

Sorry to seem to talk down to you, but WiFi will not be improved by cell towers. WiFi is a direct internet connection for data only, while the cellular towers (Verizon, US Cellular) will be for phone, text, and data (3G, 4G, etc.). The towers may improve internet reception, but phone users will still be using their data connection, and not WiFi.

If the stadium were to install WiFi, it would be quite a big deal. However, that's a lot of traffic to handle, and I'm guessing it would take a fair amount of new infrastructure (cabling, access points, etc.) to make it work sufficiently to handle the demand. I know some stadiums have WiFi, so I'm sure the U of I Athletic Dept could make it happen at some point.

The only thing more ridiculous than someone not going to a game because of no wi-fi, is not going to a game because they can't go 3 hours without alcohol.

You don't even have to go 3 hours without alcohol at the game, just go prepared. The group next to me last year smuggled in 30 minis to the game, they were a blast.

I've seen plenty of people (who are far from sober when they walk in) pull out a can of beer, a flask, or pair of ~1.5 oz liquor bottles. It's apparently easy to bring them in.

Me and my wife each bring in 3-4 minis. They aren't hard to get in as long as you don't have them in a pocket or purse. Put mine in my shoe when I get close to the stadium. Students might get searched a little harder for alcohol.

Good to know. I don't think I'll be bringing anything in as long as we've got a teenager (step-son) with us. I'm guessing cargo pockets are probably also pretty easy to use, because I've carried non-alcohol items in mine before (phones, food, etc.) and no one has ever even asked to look. I've also carried a bunch of hand and foot warmers in a bulging sweatshirt pocket and never been looked at twice.

I would avoid putting alcohol in cargo pockets, they pat down my friends every time. Could be because of our age as well. I do notice the older you are the less they seem to do.

I'm sure the age is a factor, though I'm not too much older than you. In any case, thanks for the good tips.

You complain endlessly on this thread about people who can't go 3.5 hours without wifi but you're such a drunk that you can't attend a game without sneaking in alcohol. Hypocrite.

Just saw this on Twitter. I expected the sales to be much higher for this game. 2-0, night, entertaining Iowa team, good opponent... Are people still not buying in on this team?

@ChadLeistikow: Iowa has sold 60,000 tickets as of this morning for Saturday's game vs. Pitt.
I can remember the days when you had two choices; go to the game or listen to it on the radio. These days you have other ways to follow the team and most of those are more comfortable and easier on your wallet and your backside. Filling stadiums is problem all over college football, not just Iowa. I'm confident Kinnick will look just fine on tv.

I see your point, but this isn't the definition of hypocrisy. He can attend games and still feed his "addiction" (used loosely), while some folks bitch because they can't feed their own "addiction" to WiFi while at the game. If you can attend the game while still doing what you like, then go for it. Just don't ruin anyone else's experience.

Nice try, not even close though. See one thing there is no chance of having, WiFi. The other you can smuggle in like a lot of others do. If they stripped searched you before each game I would still attend l, even though I couldn't bring in alcohol. I don't NEED alcohol to attend a game. Huge difference, again nice try though.

I have to ask this question and hopefully Stephy Patrick or some other well heeled, high society world traveler can impart wisdom on this.

What is it actually like in other stadiums as far as twitter, texting and generally internet connections on your phone? I've been to ISU games last year and remember having the same problems as at kinnick but haven't really been to too many other stadiums the last 2 years or so.

Is Iowa REALLY that bad compared to other stadiums as far as connectivity?

Complaining about one addiction while feeding your own is indeed hypocrisy.
How is taking some alcohol into a game an An "addiction"? Either you're trying to hard or trolling. Now, had I said I couldn't go to games without booze, that may qualify.
