Over on gopherhole they have a poll

I am a Viking fan and was on their board two weeks ago and I was surprised at the vitriol for the Hawks and all things Iowa.

Did Minnesota hate us this much before our ownage of the Metrodome in 2002?
yes. well, they were always THE big rival. all through the hayden years and even before. Iowa had one rival. one trophy. one thing to do, which was beat Minnesota. years ago it might have been notre dame, like in the 20's or 30's, but it's always been Minnesota

think about it: years ago there was but one bowl to go to and if you did not go to it, you had your last game as your rival game and it was always Minnesota. making the last game Nebraska really really bites

you know the hate is strong when they chant Iowa hate slogans while getting run by North Dakota State

It's almost disturbing until you realize that most of the people in the Twin Cities don't give a rat's ass about the Gophers or college football at all.

That being said...it's very odd. That's just one game versus a team that usually isn't very good. Kind of a compliment that they think about us that much. Last week with all the Ahole trolls I hated Nebraska. Now I don't really care. They have a crappy coach and suck and I won't think about them until we play them next year.

ehh I wouldn't root for gophers over the Big Ten East champion. Screw the gophers. Luckily this won't be a dilemma any hawk fans have to deal with anytime soon

If no one hates you... you're doing something wrong. The Gophers have been a non-factor in most sports not played on ice for several decades now.

The goalpost thing still sticks them wrong. When it is the lead story on most sports channels... like it was that nite, it exposes just how lousy they are/were.

BTW: To our Rodents friends, congrats on likely getting a bowl bid with a 5-7 record. Shows just how desperate bowls are to accept teams.

Just in case the Gopher fans are wondering... MSU plays on Sat. nite on your favorite Fox sports channel.

on who to root for, Iowa or MSU. 89% for MSU and lees than 11% for Iowa. I find that a little strange since the East division needs the respect. If the shoe were on the other foot I know I'd root for someone in our conference side. Seems a little odd but maybe that's the little brother coming out in them.

You'll have that after getting your goal posts ripped out and paraded around your house.

And all they could do is sit and watch it happen. I don't believe there has ever been a more demoralizing and embarrassing thing happen to a home team in history. If it isnt, I don't what would be ahead of it.

I moved to Minnesota my senior year of high school and graduated there. I was surprised at how demeaning Minnesotans were towards Iowa. They definitely thought they were better than us.

this was back in 1985 / 1986.

I can understand why they hate us. Imagine if Illinois finished their Big Ten season undefeated by romping on Iowa and then their fans tore the goalposts down at Kinnick and parading around the field with the pieces. It would be embarrassing.

They're on their 9th coach since 1979. We're on our second since '79. They will probably be on their 10th when we still have Ferentz. I think it's more jealousy than hatred. The children of the Corn aren't suppose to do better than the big city boys in the Twin Cities. Some Hawkeye - Gopher trivia .... Minnesota leads the series 62 - 45. They like to say they have dominated Iowa. They won the first 12 games from 1891 - 1916. So, actually in the past 100 years, it's been a pretty even matchup.

I always have fun at Minnesota vs. Iowa games and the night before/after. Their fans and ours can give and take a lot of mutual shit without it ever escalating. Floyd of Rosedale is to me the best trophy in the game, and in an alternate world I'd love for it to be the end of the year rivalry where both teams are relevant and playing for something extra. That being said, I hope I'm never in a situation where Minnesota is one of the options to cheer for in the Big 10 championship game.

I'd root for the goofs before anyone in the east in a ccg. Nebraska? Nope.

Sorry, that trophy and date on the schedule are already taken. :D

Anyone that thinks the fans of all West division teams need to root for whoever the West champion is for the title is a fvcking retard.

Well the PIG is one of the oldest trophies in college football. So it goes back a ways. And IIRC years before the PIG Minnesota KILLED an Iowa State player. So I'm gonna say they have hated all things Iowa for quite a while.

I think it's jealousy more than anything. I browse that board on occasion, and believe it was last year they had a poll or discussion who the disliked more, Iowa or Wisconsin. Overwhelmingly it was Bucky they hate more. When I first moved up in back in 80, I couldn't believe how they acted towards Iowa. Then, I started to realize they have an inferiority complex in some ways. The "Minneapple" and during the world series there was a sign "We like it here". I will say there was a discussion on there after our game with them, and they were talking about how good Iowa fans have been overall the past fifteen years or so.

I left at halftime of this year's game because the situation did escalate and it was not pretty. Two MN college girls were escorted out by cops and I pulled an Iowa fan back by his collar as he went down to get in a college girls face for the 2nd time. The 1st time his 10 year old son brought him back up to sit down. Between the atrocious Minny fans and our idiot fan, the game wasn't enjoyable any more.

Rookies..... Only inexperienced fools who don't understand the fun of the contest act that way. Hey, I'm hyper competitive, but that kind of stuff is nothing short of mental.
