Local CR radio station recently did a poll about what it would take to drive you away from being an Iowa fan.
My answer would be the Iowa fans. Iowa fans are becoming exactly like Nebraska fans, with the exception of at least Nebraska fans still go to the games. They are irrational, obnoxious, and have extremely misguided thoughts about Iowa athletics.
I stopped going to Kinnick years ago after 10+ years of season tickets because the atmosphere in stands. Much better experience watching on TV away from the idiots.
Still go to basketball games, but seeing a portion of the fans supporting the play-by-play announcer with more passion than the athletes is sad.

Have the last few bball games been disappointing? yes. Has Iowa had a successful year to this point? yes. Is Fran an excellent coach? yes! He has taken 4 different schools to the NCAA tournament. You have know idea how difficult that is. 3 of those schools were 1 bid leagues.

1-8 vs the top half of the conf. 1 really good win all year.
How many times have we been straight up blown out in those losses? All but 1 i think.
You call this "successful" and then question other fans?
GTFO. LMFAO!

FM a excellent coach? That sure as **** is debatable at this point. His teams lack discipline, bad fundamentals in ball handling, passing, shooting, and rebounding, loaf/lazy about half the time, lack consistency, bad recruiting, etc. Really do not care what he has done in other places. I personally only care about what he is doing at Iowa and it reeks of average at best in his ninth year. Look at what new coaches have done in the last few years and they are blowing by FM's teams. Of course IMO.

I read five message boards, Iowa, Nebraska, one other BIG and two Big 12. It's not a close contest. All the boards have their detractors but the Iowa board has the whiniest, most obnoxious mud slinging fans of the group. Iowa fans could learn a lesson from the others, especially in irrational elitism, but hisseys are hisseys.

I’m giving up my season tix after this year. I cannot supper a program that continues to do the same thing over and over again. Most universities in year 9 a coach is axed if they miss the post season. Also no top 4 finishes and basically a first weekend team.

Hell even KF made coaching changes. Fran has to change one single thing. His style is not fit for Power 5. He’s like a McDermott who can find success at the mid majors, but the big boys can adapt and scheme against your team.

Just one dudes opinion...

My opinion is debbie fans are the most fickle, spoiled rotten, most delusional stuck in the 90s fans of any fanbase, pricks..so there.....

Now, go win something...oh ya that's right...one more game bball is over for you..debbie wins by one or 20, Hawks still make the dance...

Under .500 in baseball to, too bad...

Go home...oh you cant can ya...stuck in eastern Iowa?

Move..

hahahaha going to NCAA tourney is mediocre?
When you play hardly anyone good in the non conference and get to play 3 of the top 5 teams in the conference only once and have a PATHETIC record vs top half of league....yeah, mediocre. Schedule helped us a lot.

If we do make the field of 64 it will be only 3rd time in 9 seasons. You're just gonna have to accept that much of the fanbase isn't as enamoured with underachieving as you are

If you have been watching how we've been playing for the last month and are fine with it I question if you are even a fan at all

Made me laugh... but I laughed more when I realized you actually believe it.

Yes, we all do get emotional at times. But I have to say, much of it is justified. People are tired of late season collapses, bizarre substitution schemes, inability to get guards. Dr. Tom got fired for not landing top players of his time, nobody raised an eyebrow with losing Harrison Barns or some of the other in state greats. So my question is, are we too linient with Fran?

Also, if you’d like to see what real overreaction looks like come over here to Los Angeles. Despite all those sweet 16 appearances and landing multiple 5 star players, everyone was asking for Alford’s head. He deserved it, but Bruins fans make us look like as if we are on Prozac.

So my question is, are we too linient with Fran?

Three things:

1) His contract is an albatross of sorts... but I can't blame Fran for that. (Barta sucks)

2) I mean, we probably are going to make the NCAAs so for all the bad things I can say, it is hard to axe a coach that gets you to the dance 4 out of 6 years.

3) Everybody remembers the downward spiral from Davis -> Alford -> Lick and then finally saw Fran "resurrect" the program from its darkest days... and the assumption is that even if we might be able to do better, we could always do worse.

Fran will make the dance 4 of 6 years after this season. Not 3 in 9 years as some fan misstated above.
As a 57 year fan I can be satisfied with last 6 year run. ...not ecstatic but realistically, making the dance at that clip is as goo.d as it gets for our program

Nah, Iowa fans are pretty tame compared to Nebraska fans. AINEC

I understand your point to an extent but it's rather myopic. A lot you're overlooking in the way of facts.

If being here for 9 years and still not making it past round 2 in the NCAA tournaments is being an excellent coach, than maybe he is. IMO, that isn’t cutting it. Especially when 3 of his 4 best teams have completely fell apart down the stretch.

9 years
No big ten titles
No big ten tourney titles, and I believe only 1 or 2 total wins but not 100% sure
4 NCAA tourney appearances (IF we make it this year)
2 NCAA tourney wins

I understand where the program was when he took over, and I admit, I was a huge fan of his when he was hired, but at this point I’ve seen enough. I’ve seen enough of his run and gun, fast paced style without the athletes to run it. I’ve seen enough of the laziness and lack of effort on defense. I’ve seen enough of the late season collapses. It’s clear by now where his peak is, and it shouldn’t be good enough.

I’m an old hawk fan, and been watching them for over 4 decades. So trust me, I remember the Alford, Lick years really well. I wouldn’t put Davis in that category. If Fran is an “excellent” coach, then Davis was the best coach ever.

I honestly think that Fran would do irreprable damage to his legacy at Iowa if this turns out to be a one-and-out Tourney year, and as much as it pains me to admit it, the way they’re playing now, it might very well turn out to be a year like that.

Yes, Iowa has THE only fan base who offers criticism of its programs...

Iowa is one of the few Power 5 schools who would keep an AD who should have been fired 5x over... We kept Alford 5 years too many, and we gave an extension to a coach in his 9th years who has only won 49% of his Big 10 games...

Iowa fans and the university are some of the most patient people you will find... (Ever listen to SEC football fans call in and talk about their football programs? You will discover a new meaning of irrational and obnoxious.)

I think it's awesome that reading thru the comments here proves your correct! Last year we just wanted to dance ...now we are and people are still complaining. If we had 25 wins we would still have complainers......never enough....never happy!!

Fire all the fans.

Everyone.

This is not fair. People have legitimate reasons to be complaining. We just lost by 20 points to Ohio St, by 14 to Rutgers at home, and 20 points to Wisconsin.
Once you raise people’s hope, dashing it feels far more painful. At one point, there were speculations of Iowa securing one of the top four seeds in the Midwest. We’re now down to 8 or 9 and possibly worse. You can’t blame people for feeling let down after the last 4 losses, which started with Maryland at home.

Complaining about the result is fine. The constant calling for coaches and AD to be fired, saying that the coaches are idiots, personal attacks on the athletes, siding with the play-by-play guy instead of the the athlete, are all things that are not OK. Those are the things that fan bases that we make fun of do.

The argument that every fan base is like this is both not true and a horrible defense. It didn't work back when you tried to use that excuse back when you were 10 years old, and it doesn't work now either.
