Except there is a criminal complaint. Most likely he was booking bets for other athletes and now some of them have flipped to save their asses. If that’s the case, he could be toast.

How many “recreational” gamblers do you know who could make 40k worth of bets starting with a couple of hundred, without reloading?
Actually not that difficult depending on the vet types. Betting favorites on the money line, especially baseball and basketball can easily keep your balance up while increasing the amount bet in total. Example…betting $100 on the Yankees at home to win straight up against the Royals to pay about $120. It’s not outrageous at all if that’s the gambling style. Of course, we have no idea.

Not quite. He basically can't redshirt until his suspension is up. If he wants to redshirt, it would be after the term of his suspension. Doesn't make much of a difference though. Also, he might be banned permanently considering he bet on ISU.
We don’t have all the details, but my initial thoughts are sympathetic towards the kid. He’s super young and it sounds like he did a dumb thing. I’m sure many of us did way dumber when we were his age. I know I did. Hopefully, this whole thing can be used as a tool to help these (and future) young men not ruin their lives.

I didn’t have a pot to piss in when I was his age, so playing a few nickel slots would be the extent of my gambling 😉. This NIL money in the hands of young kids with easy access to online gambling now is a disaster waiting to happen. The son of a friend of mine is good at it, and has made enough over the last few years to buy a new truck. When they see success like this , they think it’s easy money, but more lose than win.

It's just math. You could flip a coin to pick which bets to make and you will lose roughly 5% of the amount you gamble. Isn't that still roughly the house take? I haven't gambled in a few decades, but a google search confirmed it's still around 5%.

5% of 45K is $2,250, so that would be the best assumption for the amount lost.
Huh?? Just a few months ago I bet on sports for the first time in my life, so admittedly I'm not very experienced. But when I've bet and lost, I've lost 100% of the wager amount. I bet $10, lose the bet, and get nothing. I don't understand your assertion that a bettor will lose only 5% of the amount he gambles. On the other hand, if I win a $10 bet, the payout of course depends on the odds.

How many gamblers do you know who are that disciplined? All it takes is a couple of upsets to take away modest profits made from only betting prohibitive favorites.

I’m hoping suspensions and/or loss of eligibility is as far as it goes, it’s going to suck if any of these kids get kicked out of school over this.

I don't see how any university can kick kids out of school over anything we've heard so far.
You separate athletics and academics.
In certain instances, being out of athletics might mean loss of a tutor, for example, and from a social interaction perspective it might be pretty difficult to stay.

I have a 20 something nephew with a really good job who was showing me his betting app on his phone. He said he deposited $200 6 months ago and he now has about $3600 in the account. He said he scans the bets every day, picks the "best" ones in his opinion and bets $20 on 2 or 3 things and slowly keeps building his balance. Said he has friends betting thousands with tens of thousands in their accounts. Seems crazy to me, but I can see the appeal in the "easy" money right up until you are in big trouble financially.

This might a fun thing to do as a hobby…deposit a grand and make small weekly bets. It’s like anything else…in moderation it’s ok but know when to turn the lights out when the party is over.

I play $1 games (I know big spender) most every day but I do it for fun and competition, not trying to make money. My hatred of losing money just narrowly outweighs my want to gamble.

I make it a practice to only gamble where the payout is a lunch with a friend whose company I like or to a charity.

I think hearing over and over how they cast lots for Jesus' belongings during the crucifixion gave me a deeply held aversion to gambling. Also, I grew up somewhat poor, so paying the vig for the opportunity to gamble doesn't sit well with me. Part of my dependent arising, I guess.

Over time the odds and basic statistics favor the house. A certainty right up there with death and taxes. Very few 'sophisticated' gamblers can make a profitable go of it over the long term. Most amateurs that see early success will increase the amount they bet as their confidence increases, ultimately to their own peril.

To your point, we can all see the appeal, and to a 20 something student, there is the allure of what seems 'free money' in many places that proves hard to resist. Crypto is right up there as well. Time is the great equalizer.

As to your nephew, give us an update next year....

I only bet on football and never more than 20 bucks…… last year I ended up a couple hundred up that I probably lost the year before 😂

It’s fun……. like playing fantasy football it’s another way to “participate” in football season…….I’m a football junkie

Could never get into fantasy football. Too invested in the Chiefs to root for a guy on the opposing team because he's on my roster.

I agree with you on that point, however, it’s been a ratings bonanza for the NFL as the majority of FFL players watch more games because of it. I’ve watched MNF games just to root for a freaking kicker 😂.

I’m hearing Dresser is bringing in Chris “get a fall guy” Carter to speak to the team this year.

Just spoke w/ people familiar with the situation.

The program says this is 100% inaccurate and are pretty furious w/ DMR.

They tell me Paniro Johnson will have absolutely zero penalties.

i.e. - this is fake news
Paniro is going to be ok with the legal system.

Not so much for the ncaa I fear
