Pat Likely to Play This Year

In non-Moss related news . . .

I would expect him to fit a Baer-type role. I know there's weight concerns, but we probably need him coming off the bench. I don't know who else could play the three 3 when Joe needs a break.
This obviously gives another in-game option at guard, moving JW to SG with Patrick at SF. Options gooood.

Only problem i see is rotation. This probably means a 10-man rotation (which is something Fran has taken a lot of flack for from the fan-base). I think its good to have options because we have several players with injury history. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think not. I see it more as a chance for the staff to plug in players to get better matchups. This team has more flexibility now.

This year I’m not particularly worried about rotation size. Up front, JW and Garza are established. In the backcourt, some rotation may be needed to work out who plays more- which may change through the season.

He needs to play Joe W 30+ MPG this year and not piss him off by forgetting about him on the bench as he seems to do from time to time.

Why can't Connor play the 3...? He has the size. Can defend. I see no reason why not.

Or we go with a 3 guard set. Which could include Connor, or not.... And occasionally a 3 forward set, when teams play big.

There was talk not too long ago about him redshirting.

Regardless of who a team has coming back, I can't believe a 4* recruit being considered for a redshirt at any program.

If you're given 4* coming out of high school, you're good enough to play your first year regardless of your weight, roster, position, etc...

At least you better be.

These kids have played against top national talent for several years. Yes, Patrick is skinny, but he can play. Stop if you've heard this before, but Iowa's biggest issue is guards.

Fran initially talked about Patrick redshirting....and I am certain that they seriously considered it. That said, I always assumed that with the exception of being injured, he was going to play. He's to good of a player not to. I think he backs up Joe W where he gets maybe 10 minutes a game...maybe more if Joe slides over and plays the 2G much.

I think it's important that he does play...gives him a chance to get the experience and learn how much stronger he needs to be. What works and what doesn't. This then sets him on the right path if Joe goes pro after this year.

Patrick has been playing against college age players for probably the last 4-5 years at least. Pretty sure he has a good idea of what he can and can't do against them physically. He'll be just fine.

Given the flux of the roster since April, it makes sense to not rule out any of the scholarship players when it comes to potential rotations.

I've never been enamored of the whole short bench/rotation philosophy espoused by some. Particularly before play has even started. It sorts itself out as the season progresses; minutes shrink or grow as needed and as players are available or not available.

Yep, I think this is right on. Iowa’s 3-5 is as good as most any team in the Big Ten with great skill, experience, depth, and diversity. That is great for Patrick to get his feet wet next year because he probably will only be playing about 10 minutes a game.

He is the only true back-up to Wieskamp at the 3 and we know Joe is going to get 30+ minutes. There won’t be heavy expectations and pressure in Patrick and he can slide into that Baer role and get acclimated to the physical style of college ball with limited minutes.

I think PM will be fine on the offensive end. It remains to be seen what kind of liability he might be on defense. I expect he’ll play with great effort and that’s all we can ask for.

Some people are expecting/hoping for big weight and strength gains, but ignoring his health history. I’m sure he’s been working hard on both issues and hope that he’ll become the best version of his himself health allows.

I see a lot of things he does well and I expect him to understand and execute the system. I hope he’s able to earn significant minutes

I think he will be successful at the 3 and offers an interesting option at the 4 if teams decide to play small. I could see him being an option at the end of games to add another ball handler. We can hide him in a zone if his weight is a real issue. He will make this team much better. I’m on the PMac train.

you do realize Joe averaged 27.7 mpg last year and there was a stretch in BigTen play where Joe was dealing with some back issues that limited his playing time? After that stretch he averaged 33.6 mpg

This. I ran the numbers for B1G, BTT, and tourney play. He played 72.6% of the available minutes. Poor kid, just languishing on the bench.

As several posters have pointed out, more options among the 3 perimeter players is a really good problem for Fran to have. Assuming our new guards can play, using PMac as JoeW's main back up seems most likely, but it can depend on match ups and how the rotations set up, once everyone has shown what they can do. I hope we can keep Joe primarily at 3, and don't have to slide him to two very often.
