During his career he was a major factor in some big wins.
Played his ass off his whole career. A player you never had to question if giving it his all.
I remember his freshman year where he game in and had some games where he really contributed, the guy rebounded and could stick shots. True Hawkeye and wish him the best.
He had a rough year; but, you wonder how much that wrist injury affected him. Fran kept making him the go to guy when he shots weren't falling. That was bad coaching. PS always gave it his best. He is a very good player that wasn't used correctly.
As frustrating and maddening as many of the games this season have been, players like Payton are why I still love and watch every Iowa game
If Payton were playing on the two UCONN teams that won National Titles, he would have fit in as a 3pt specialist, guy off the bench and been a stud. He gave great effort all the time. Needed a different supporting cast. and different coach.
That’s the truth.
Just didn’t have great ability and was an average player but he played hard & loved Iowa.
Got to commend him for that.
We get mad at Sandy for some deficiencies, especially on the defensive end. However, I think he was a good captain of this team and kept this team together. He ended on a high note, personally. I thought he was a good Hawk and a great representative of Iowa.

i'll admit as a fan we are highly emotional when it comes to wins and losses.
I'm as frustrated as all of you when it comes to the wins and losses but win or loss I admired Payton.
Gave everything he had and that's all you can ask of a player.

You have to be proud of the way he went out. That was leaving it all on the floor.
