PBP #53 Chattanooga vs#2 Iowa

Yeah it’s too bad. But it’s Joel Jesuroga who’s redshirting and will never be expected to first string. And he took a ranked guy to OT. Damn near had him. So who cares?
I’m good with all that. Ultimately there results don’t matter per say, but I do think they both could have taken a more aggressive approach. Lose like Cullan did. No one expects them to win. So take a shot and see what happens.

They’re backups. They got matches in, but damn. Ya know?

Mathews, not sure what he was doing. Bizarre.

Agree for most. However cobe needs to do more against a mid level kid
Unfortunately I'm not sure about Cobe once we get into the meat of our schedule and March. While he can definitely score with his funk and he's a decent rider he doesn't have a lot of offense to fall back on.

I do love that he's willing to open up and let it fly and I hope that carries over into March.

But they are backups for The Hawks. I just expected more.

Did anybody else find the ending of 149 strange? Almost like we didn’t know that we were losing at the end of the overtime’s based on riding time? Maybe just a little inexperience, I don’t really know.
That's a new rule and obviously Jesuroga didn't know it. I'd hope the staff knew but they may not have been able to properly relay it to him with limited time left in the match.

You'd think that is something that would have been discussed in the room at some point.

Didn’t seem like the coaching staff was up in arms over this as it was happening. Odd and unfortunate ending. Promising looking kid tho

This was not as horrid a showing as some are saying. Starters (mostly) did their jobs. But disappointing that we lost all the close ones. Makes for a bummer of a dual.

125: I had zero expectations here and Matthews still managed to disappoint
133: If Schriever learns to finish a shot he majors this guy...but why can't he finish a shot?
149 Jesuroga hung tough against a decent wrestler, but, man, you gotta have the will to win
174 Sigh...the ghost of Cash Wilcke

Three of the four losses were backups. Duly noted. But every match was winnable.

It's like going to a Broadway show with understudies in a few key roles, and it's not a good show. It's perfectly reasonable to understand why and still be disappointed.

125 NA
133 c wish the refs would have helped here.
141 a
149 c this guy has some potential
157 b+ I'm on the Cobe Train
165 PK looking very good here
174 c-
184 B looking good over an overmatched opponent
197 b Warner looking like career Warner
285 Tony is a bad man

Someone needs to add the gif of "F*** and find out"
Tony’s class is in session…

Just an opinion from what I've seen on this forum today. To be at the University of Iowa as a Hawk on the mat you are one the best in the Nation. Like most of you I wrestled once upon a time also. I was fortunate to have been coached by a National Champ and two of his sons were also National Champs. When I entered the armed forces as child (age 17), during the the Viet Nam Conflict, I was good enough on the mat to be offered the opportunity to wrestle for the US Air Force around the globe. I turned that opportunity down in favor of the US Special Forces (Para Rescue Diver) at a really difficult period in US history. But call any Iowa wrestler a turd is insane. I'm not happy with some of the results on the mat either. But you half to support these young men regardless of the results. Would any of you calling the wrestlers today turds, want to meet them at the center of the mat? I doubt it. Go Hawks!!!

I just love it when guys get dominated in the match, do nothing to try to win, then have the energy to get up and run their mouths after the whistle blows.
Rewatched some of the dual. I was curious what happened there. In the last few seconds Warner is riding him hard with his head. It sure does look like the opponent pulled Warners hair. I might be crazy but that’s what it looked like. Weird.

Iowa leads 13-9
#14 Brands vs #16 Rocky Jordan (formerly of tOSU)
rubbing foreheads
Chat singlet has a bird head on it. Mocs are a bird?
not many shots but Brands has tried
under a min.
From Wikipedia: Moc is the shortened version of the original nickname, "Moccasins". It also refers to the northern mockingbird, Tennessee's state bird

My wife "we usually don't lose this much."
My wife came into the family room several times during the first half of the dual when I was talking rather loudly to the TV. When I mentioned that we were losing her comment was, if we're losing why isn't he (Iowa wrestler at the time) trying to do something? Regardless of who we're putting on the floor, when our opponent's highest ranked wrestler is 16th, there's no reason for losing more than one or two matches. A grand total of zero TDs over four weights is absolutely atrocious. We are Iowa. We are the greatest ambassadors for college wrestling. Wherever we wrestle there is an expectation that we're going to put on a show...at every weight. We might not win at every weight, but we should definitely be giving the audience a show. We had zero TDs at 25, 33, 49 and 74...that is not the show we should be bringing to the wrestling fans. Our job is to win, first and foremost, but also sell the excitement of college wrestling - of Iowa wrestling - to every fan out there. We failed to do that tonight. We failed to bring a quality show to Chattanooga.

Interestingly enough, the ESPN announcers were all over this. If in fact, it was an oversight on the rules, I'm glad we figured it out on a Saturday in December in TN than a weekend in January or February.

Thanks for your service!

You live in the "Teton Valley"? Beautiful area. Shot a moose in that area, near Driggs, back in the 90's. To stay on theme, saw alot of big bear turds while there and was hoping not to fill my shorts with turds.

The 133 for UTC is notoriously difficult to score on for almost anyone. He thrives in those situations so honestly I wasn’t at all surprised by how that went.

You know when we signed Ybarra I was pretty pumped... Thought he had a good chance to develop into a strong wrestler... As he was fairly well sought after. Maybe I'm not as smart as I generally think I am. I'm still holding final judgement on that though 😉.

Oh I’m discounting Real. Points are points, but 4 takedowns through 5 matches I think speaks to the quality of wrestling through the first half of the dual.

Pk will have more takedowns than that by himself.
We didn’t score a single point until the final period of 133. But CS was the aggressor the entire match.

Lots of big bears.

Mike: I was in Airborne School back in the mid 80s with a couple AF Para Rescue guys (we were all in the same chalk). Those boys were some bad men. No matter what the Blackhats threw at them those boys were unbeatable. Just wow! We also had a couple Rangers in our chalk, and as bad ass as the Rangers were physically, they couldn't hang with the Para Rescue boys. Again, a couple bad men.

Thanks for the reply and the info. A lot of training involved. Probably one of the reasons I still workout with weights at age 76. I was a child in those days ... a highly trained child. I often wander how I ever accomplished that goal in life. Jump school, Navy diving school, medical training, all four survival schools (high mountain dessert and prisoner of war training, jungle, sea and artic), the endless hours of learning how to be a field surgeon without a medical degree, the numerous parachute jumps in all the conditions with heavy equipment. A unit originally set up to rescue returning objects from space, suddenly involved in rescuing pilots shot down in Viet Nam. You are first person that has ever recalled our unit. Thanks. Airborne. Go Hawks!!!

And somehow I forgot all the running we did. The pullups and pushups. I remember in jump school when a drill seargent said drop and do twenty pushups, we replied which arm sir.

AMEN on the filling of your britches. They trapped a problem sow and her cub out of the north end of Teton Valley this fall. She had been relocated twice for causing trouble. I ran into her one evening. All I can say is first I said it then I did it.

Well, at least you were able to type that and aren't a (bear) turd. Maybe a turd when it comes to your sports allegiance 🙂
