With Veteran's day coming up my company listed the people whom are Veteran's. The company is about 800 people. The percentage was around 6 or 7 percent. Kind of surprised me. I thought it would be higher.

Well, I'm in the Army, all of us have (at least) one National Defense Medal and almost all of us have at least one combat patch, most of us are authorized for more than one of those.

So...100%

6-7% seems to be a solid number for most companies. I think veterans make up about 8% of the workforce and a lot of them end up working for the federal government. My workplace is heavy on scientists with advanced education degrees. We're probably around 4% or lower.

I would think that if they are all still working there, then the percentage of veterans would be %0.;)

Just a guess, but I’m going to say under 10%. My company is about 70 people, 50% are female. Not saying they couldn’t be vets, but that percentage is less with females. I don’t know a single co-worker who spent any time in the military, but I don’t know all 70 very well. If it was 7 out of 70, I wouldn’t be shocked.

I would guess around 15-19%. Much higher than you might anticipate from a group of instructors and professors. There are some innovative programs to get military medics, engineers, and officers into the field. Great guys and gals, all of them.

Technically speaking, anyone who has served on Title 10 status for a minimum of 180 days and has a DD Form 214 qualifies, as does someone who has served for 20+ years in the RC (even without the DD214). Everyone I work with full time meets one of those requirements.

Now, does anyone still serving in the military really consider themselves a vet? I don't know of any.

The union mechanics have a large % of veterans. In the office, we have probably have 10%. The service operations manager was in the marines and was on Presidential detail for Bush 41. Also 1 year with Clinton. My new hire last year was a radar specialist in the special forces. Super cool guy. One of the other service supervisors was a small arms specialist in the marines.

The stories these guys have are mind blowing.

In a csb, the guy who was part of the 41 POTUS detail told a story about a trip to the vacation home in Maine. Bush 41, Jeb, and W wanted to play a game of horse shoes and 41 asked him if he would be his playing partner.

We have quite a few retired military at my workplace, several of whom are constantly decked out in their 'I SERVED IN THE MILITARY, ACKNOWLEDGE ME' garb.

The others - who actually served in the sh*t in Nam - kind of roll their eyes at the guys who need the attention.

I am retired, but my last job on Wall Street was for a company with about 400 employees. I probably knew half of them well enough to know their backgrounds.

I only knew of about 6, including a couple of really old WWII vets.

So I would estimate about 10-12 of the 400 ... or about 3%.

Not a lot. I've only had a couple requests for the free day off for vets so far

Is the day paid or unpaid? Our company it is unpaid so there will probably be 6 or 7 who take it off. Maybe 3 or 4 more who will take a few hours to participate in Veterans day activities.

I'm now retired. I served 28 years in the Army and I'm one of the few with three NDSMs. Also a service-disabled veteran, which sounds like the beginning of a war story, but actually I have a compressed disc between my 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae which I received while playing football during unit PT.

We give vets one paid day off of any day in November.

The WWII vets, when a very high percentage of men were in service, are gone or retired. Korea had a rather high percentage, too. Gone or retired. Many don't realize that the draft went on for quite a while, which is why Elvis went into the military. Now it is volunteer. Also, maybe the percentage of women employees is higher, and they were not drafted (should be?).
