Peyton Robb

My goodness, sepsis and blood clots in the lungs- that is really scary,. Something you’d never see coming to turn your life upside down right when you’re at the pinnacle.

Also known as a pulmonary embolism.

Serious stuff, but given his youth and exceptional physical fitness, I expect him to do great.

Never been a fan of the NE program, but I’ve always admired Peyton. Hard-nosed kid, humble, never a showboat, and always a good sport. Wish him the best.

The NCAA needs to look into this. He's the second guy (that we know) that was hospitalized during/following the the NCAA tourney for serious bacterial infections. Is it the UV cleaners? Are they not monitoring and cleaning the warmup/practice areas? I know they had loading dock doors open with stuffing being moved in and out near the warm up areas during the tourney. Cleaning the mats while helpful, does not really do a ton of good when guys are picking up this crap on their shoes moving from one area to another.

Who was the other guy? I think I remember seeing something but I'm drawing a blank. I think Wittlake was in the hospital, was his an infection as well?

100% needs to be looked into. I don't trust those UV cleaners at all.

This happened while he was at the ncaa's. If he would have picked something up from one of the mats there, would it likely have come on that fast?

Yikes, that's awful. Best wishes to Robb, always have appreciated his toughness and style.. I'm still trying to figure out why the Robb family or any family for that matter, should be on the hook for costs of medical care for an athlete injured while participating for a university? Is that the norm?

Some of these strains attack and spread very quickly. While generally the incubation is 4-10 days, some of these really bad ones can incubate and really spread within a day or two. Keep in mind, these teams were already there and practicing on the mats the Wed prior.

Even if all of the medical bill are 100% covered which I would expect that they would be there are significant expenses around a situation like this that likely would not be covered. A few that come to mind are. I have no idea what the Robb family's financial situation but I know they are from Minnesota
  • Transportation to for the family between home and Lincoln
  • Lost wages for family taking care of their son
  • A place for Robb's family to stay in Lincoln so they can be with their son.
  • Meals in Lincoln for the family
  • Parking at the hospital
  • Accommodations and modifications for Peyton when he gets out of the hospital including wheel chair ramps etc
  • Likely lost wages from any sort of summer work for Peyton
  • I'm not sure what else but I'm sure it adds up in a hurry.

Hmmm...I recall a number of comments about how hard the Resilite mats were at Natty's. Is there a potential connection to skin abrasions and the reportedly hard mats????

I think the hard ones were at Big Tens. The nationals looked like the ones they've had for years.

Yep. I doubt he has any significant costs directly related to his care. Potentially quite a few indirect costs for him and his family in the process.

IMO, the main value of campaigns like this has to do with emotional support. Knowing that thousands of people are pulling for you, and dare I say praying for you, can make a world of difference for a patient and the patient’s family. I think the money is secondary in quite a few cases.

I never know for sure who actually gives to these things but some real wrestling famous people on that list. Warms my heart.

Not sure who advised them that running UV lights over the mats would be an effective process but my two degrees in microbiology make me doubtful that it works against bacteria. Or maybe even viruses with that short of an exposure. Looks cooler than mops though.

I think UV can be effective but it takes time. The exposure in this instance is literally seconds. Even bleach is supposed to dry for 3 minutes. Oxyvir has a quicker dry time.

How awful. I pray Peyton can make a full, speedy recovery.

Necrotizing fasciitis is no joke. My grandpa was (idiotically) splitting wood in the timber by himself one afternoon and a giant stump rolled off the splitter and landed on his leg, pinning him to the ground. Grandpa took out his pocket knife and dug the earth away from under his knee and thigh to free himself, which he did. Similar to Peyton, he soon took a turn for the worse. I remember how much pain he was in as they cut out more and more of his leg everyday. Miraculously, they were able to actually save his leg, but the NF took it's toll. He lived the rest of his life with large chunks of meat and tissue missing from his leg. I remember how adament the doctors were about how lucky he was to even be alive, let alone having his leg saved. Shits just brutal. Feel terrible for Peyton and the Robbs.

Some things worth considering…

Bacteria counts are usually way higher on a person than a surface. Person to person spread is a big deal and skin checks are important. First question would be, were the infected wrestlers in the same weight class or subject to this type of transmission? Seems like an easy case for Sherlock or the CDC.

Regarding UV light cleaners, they aren’t regulated by the FDA so claims of effectiveness typically come from manufacturers. Also, not all UV light cleaners are equally effective and over time the UV bulb can weaken. Finally, bacteria that survives UV exposure can evolve in a bad way.

If you’re interested in a “good source look” at the UV topic here you go….
