PGA player COVID positive at tournament

Saw earlier that the Lightning are shutting down training temporarily because a few players and staff tested positive.

I think this will have to be the way to move forward. Surgical vs shutting down everything. Hope it works.
This kind of represents what the mythical "indefinite/perpetual shutdown" folks have wanted all along—some reasonably adequate testing and tracing capability to operate like this—with the general thinking being that up and until that capability exists, a fairly consensus shutdown might be the best course of action. And this is the most extreme this contingent has ever been on this matter, which I find to be hardly extreme at all.

That is interesting that he tested negative prior to the tournament but then positive on Friday. Let's hope no one else on the course got infected, otherwise it could cause some major issues in getting sports going again as it would suggest you can test negative one day, not have symptoms, but still transmit the infection.

Spot on again as usual Art. They don’t share clubs and don’t really stand near each other. The caddy can wear gloves and there is very minimal chance of transmitting. I guess if he licks his ball, knocks it in, and the next players ball gets it from the cup and the next player licks the ball.

It’s friggin golf! It’s outdoors, it’s all people who are not at risk, and it’s damn easy to social distance. That we think it makes sense that he has to withdraw is a sign of our continued irrational fear.
I don't see it that way. I see it as better safe than sorry. The event has not been cancelled, has it? Nick is isolated. Medical experts are consulted. Where is the irrationality in the steps they're taking?

The fear is irrational. Of everything he does, spreading the virus while golfing is one of the least dangerous.

I know this won't register to you, but most people don't even want the flu and this is worse. And just because the golfer may not be at risk, there may be other family members who are. It makes zero sense to allow someone who knows they have the virus to be allowed to walk around and infect others. Many of the workers are older people. I know you wouldn't feel bad if you infected someone and they died, but most normal people wouldn't want to live with that.

I read something about public restrooms being a place you want to stay away from. I think it could make sense, if the virus sort of floats around in the air for a while, especially in contained areas, a public restroom would be a great place to catch it and when nature calls and you’re away from your house, what’s guy or gal supposed to do?

It’s outdoors, and he never has to get within ten or twenty feet of anyone but his caddy.

It’s their decision to make. If it was up to you, you’d force everyone to do everything and not care who gets hurt. Wow, you are selfish.

Bryson just got HUGE since before the lay off. His distance is prodigious! I think I heard last week his average “second shots” (into the green) was like 116 yds!
Yeah, he started right after the FedEx Championship I believe.

Yep, driver-wedge or even iron-wedge on these classic courses now.

Yay technology!

5.5 degree driver. His swing speed is just ridiculous now.

He is golf’s mad scientist.

Being able to make your own decisions is a great thing, isn’t it? Thank god people can make decisions for themselves again.

Sure about that? Trump and his supporters want to force people to do what they don’t want to. Art is having a cow because a guy dropped out of a golf tournament. trump originally shutdown the country, I bet you’re pissed at him.

I
But he will. That's the problem.
Remember the golfer, Jim Thorpe? He had the same issues 30 years ago.....tremendously long but he was really bad with a wedge in his hand....he once in frustration told folks he’d pay someone $1M if they could teach him how to hit a wedge within 15’ of the hole....
I have always believed that in golf it isn’t the hard shots that make it difficult to score..it was was phuquing up the easy ones that kill you and your score.

absolutely. Can’t stand trump as it is. Thought it was dumb as hell to shut it down.
