Playing not to lose has lost us more than our share. I don’t see this shit team getting to 6 wins. Not that recruiting can get any worse because we’re still at the bottom of the league. The future is not bright for this program.

Cade would have blown the throw or one of the OL would have gotten blown up and forced and early throw. Given Cade's stats in game, I could see why they preferred to run off the clock vs going for a 1st down. When you get 1st and goal inside the 5 twice and can't score a TD, that kept ISU in the game. This was an above average scoring game by past standards set by BF/KF. The defense is definitely down from past years. The result is this is a middle of the pack team in B1G.

This times a million

Why Iowa can get creative with the run game drives me nuts since qb and the passing game are beyond repair, and Brown getting no balls other than the missed td under throw is crazy

We keep blaming the defense but they were pitching a shutout

And the came out and shut them down on the first possession. ISU sideline was yelling at each other

Then Cade throws the pick and that fired up ISU in the positive manner.

We have been spoiled with a defense usually coming out with the opponent starting on the 1 yard line.

Once ISU got that confidence back it was over. Could the defense play better, sure…say that about any game

But having the Iowa offense do nothing for majority of the game eventually catches up

Agreed with you until your final sentence.

You need one more 1st Down to ice the game and you run 2 complete give up plays into the middle of the line, (Where you've been stoned all game long ) and a half-ass toss play into a phone booth.

They didn't even try to make the 1st.
Under Ferentz, we NEVER make that last critical first down to pocket the win.

Happened wayyy too many times in the last decade. B10 Champ game vs Sparty comes to mind.

The defense may be good, but they're not *that good*. Coaching like you can just coast to a win with a 1 or 2 score lead is incredibly antiquated.

The Citrus Bowl against UK. All we needed was a first down. They were selling out for the run. What do we do, play to THEIR strength and just run into the middle to just punt and hope the defense could hold on. Didn’t work out.

Indeed. And the irony of this game is that we were ultraconservative when we would have been well-served to get more aggressive (i.e., when one 1st down puts the game away) but then inexplicably aggressive when it would have served us to be more conservative (i.e., Cade chucking it across the field without even assessing the coverage while up 13-0 on a potentially game-sealing drive, and when nothing but QB sneaks would punch it in the end zone but we're chucking the ball all over the end zone). Granted, horrible execution by the QB had a lot to do with the pivotal interception, but damnit -- we were almost in FG range already and 16-0 in the 3rd quarter pretty much ices the game. That's one situation where burning some clock and getting into FG range makes a lot of sense, plus KJ was breaking off long ones and might have taken one to the house, himself.

The in-game IQ of our coaching staff has been a problem for many years now. Lots of inexplicable brain farts. It's not necessarily that we're always too conservative in our play-calling and clock management, but that we're sometimes unnecessarily aggressive when being more conservative would be the smarter move. Granted, all of this is easier in hindsight and good execution does make coaches look smarter and vice versa, but the point stands -- lots of head-scratching decisions from the Iowa staff over the years and most certainly on Saturday.

While it is necessary to have a good running game, you also have to be able to throw the ball. Iowa is no threat whatsoever with their passing game and hasn’t been for several years.

ISU knew the Hawks would not pass the ball that possession and could throw everyone at the line. There was almost zero chance of picking up a first down. Our qb can’t even be relied on to make a simple short throw to pick up 3-4-5 yards. That is insane. So we just play not to lose and give ISU one more chance.

If the situation were reversed and Iowa needed to pick up 40 yards in less than 40 seconds with no timeouts, does anyone honestly think they have a prayer of doing that? They couldn’t even get 15 yards with over a minute to play last year against Minnesota!

Kirk’s philosophy of keeping games close and hoping the other team makes a mistake might work against the poor teams, but not with good teams.

The days of statue qbs are over. But Kirk doesn’t understand that. Football today requires a mobile qb that can complete a high percentage of passes. We have a proven one on the roster. He sits on the bench, and will continue to sit on the bench no matter how poorly Cade performs. Kirk won’t even put him in up 33 points early in the 4th quarter….he only goes in with less than 2 minutes to hand the ball off a couple of times. In no other program does this happen. ISU benches Brock Purdy for a poor performance, but Kirk only rarely sits his starter down.

Once again we are going to waste a season because of poor qb play and a bad offense. Oh sure, the Hawks will probably make a bowl game and get beat there, and many fans will be satisfied. But they won’t be very satisfied starting next season when the schedule is more difficult and we lose a ton of starters.

Saturday night. OU in similar position against Houston and got TE on 3rd down to seal the W and not give the ball back.
