How many points has he given away tonight in the first half. I was a huge fan of his back in his freshman here, but enough is enough. I feel sorry for the kid, but he just shouldn't be on the court right now.
I don't understand why Fran pulled Garza out for the last 2 minutes of the half for Pemsl.

It's crazy how much better Kriener is in every facet. Better passer, defender, shooter, and post moves. If Pemsl was better at even one of these things, it might justify his occasional insertion. Instead, he is a walking turnover. His TO per minute played has to be one of the highest in the country. His footwork and passes are just sloppy as heck for someone practicing with D1 players for years.

I feel for Pemsl, just always seems so out of place out there. God forbid he gets the ball in his hands and he immediately starts looking to pass it off. I think he would benefit from some schemes and playcalling that at least get him the ball closer to the basket instead of out in no man's land. Not saying we would should make a concerted effort to get him involved offensively, but running plays as if he is going to do absolutely anything with the ball out on the perimeter is foolish. He can't shoot out there and he's not going to generate any kind of offensive threat with his passing that far from the basket.

He needs to play some. The Big Ten is the toughest conference in the nation and Iowa is playing 8 guys. He’s a shell of himself and it’s obvious injuries have eroded his athletic ability. Still, there are times he has given good minutes. It’s necessary that he gives 5-10 minutes a game so that Iowa doesn’t have to play 4 guys 35 minutes a game in a brutal 20 game conference schedule.

Defensively, anyone can do better than Pemsl. Offensively, nobody does worse. Enough is definitely enough.

Good, accurate post

indeed. coaches have to think "big picture", not just 1 win.

of course I'd like to see RK take a few minutes from him. he's really stepping up this year and in a huge way.

I think its ok if Fran wants to play him since we only go 8 deep right now, but if he wants to do it he's got to find a way to hide him a bit better than throwing him in with some of those lineups where we have Bakari and Connor out with him at the same time. And when you've got such a competitive opponent like Rutgers, unless Kreiner or Garza is in foul trouble, you just can't afford to play him to be frank. Hopefully he is able to shake off some of the rust and injury and can find some confidence by the end of the season to make Fran look like a genius.

Good passer?

A few good passes don’t negate twice as many bad passes.
I really think that's part of the problem. He makes one nice quick pass in traffic, then believes he can do it all the time.

Then we turn it over trying to feed him in the post. Why?

Set some pics, rebound, and stay out of the way. Don't need anything flashy, just be solid and don't turn it over until your time is up.

he did have a pretty bad unit out there for a while, but I imagine that also allows us to put our best lineup on the floor more often during the game.

He's the equivalent to the Ironing board game piece in Monopoly...Jesus, maybe it's the Iron, all in all he just fills a space and sometime that space is to pass from the perimeter. Other than that, no..

I just want him to get a break away to see if he can still dunk...

All kidding aside (well I do want to see what would happen on a breakaway)....I feel bad for him. His freshman year I thought he had the best footwork around the basket than anyone Iowa has had in awhile. Now due to injuries he looks like a stiff low level player. Dude is a casualty of injuries. If he stays around another year, his minutes will be nonexistent outside of one or two games where the other team has a banger that can’t face up.

The last few games the announcers have talked about what a great passer he is. He does have a nice pass now and again but I feel like he gets it and he is gonna throw it to the post no matter what. I get that with our lack of depth down low he has to play some spot minutes but he needs to be reeled in a bit.

I've been critical of Pemsl far too often, but Fran has no choice but to play him in every game, it's just the way it's going to be. We all remember how he emerged as a low post player as a freshmen and that's an area that is occupied by Garza now so he would only fill an area that needs to be open for Luka.
Pemsl knows that and so he has to rebound and play as much defense as his body will allow. He makes mistakes but he's trying to help the team any way he can knowing he's limited. Lot's of games left to help this team make the NCAA tournament.

It’s hard to complain when we win and are on a streak. However, I think it’s odd that RK played 18 minutes and Pemsl plays 11 minutes. I sure think RK can handle more than 18 minutes. I personally think RK should eat up at least 4-5 of those minutes.

The one argument that is hard to quantify is that playing Pemsl for 10+ minutes may help him physically and emotionally down the road. You never know what substitution patterns will pay off to end a season.

My guess is Fran sat Garza so he didn’t pick up a 2nd foul before half.

Pemsl will have to play each game to give Garza some rest. That’s where Iowa’s bench is at this point. Just hope for Pemsl to provide 6-7 quality minutes a night. Tonight wasn’t one of them.

I’m plenty critical of Cordell and I cringe but he needs to scoop up a few minutes here and there.

But then it falls on Fran to make sure he has several starters out there surrounding him.

I cringe every time he checks in.
we have a numbers problem. we only have 3 coming off the bench (2 bigs and one guard). that's it. you can't expect the starting 5 to play all 40 minutes. I suppose you could give Till some minutes but is that the answer? Fran seems to not think so.

In the preseason, we had no idea CJF was this good; we had no idea Garza would do what he's doing. When you think about ti, it's kinda hard to believe that JoeT, Connor and CJF in the starting 5 and Pemsl & Evelyn coming off the bench is getting it done and has gotten Iowa to #19 in the country.
