Please, No more Pemsl...

He needs to play some. The Big Ten is the toughest conference in the nation and Iowa is playing 8 guys. He’s a shell of himself and it’s obvious injuries have eroded his athletic ability. Still, there are times he has given good minutes. It’s necessary that he gives 5-10 minutes a game so that Iowa doesn’t have to play 4 guys 35 minutes a game in a brutal 20 game conference schedule.

Yeah I get to an extent why he plays. Guys can't all play 40 minutes a game and I'm sure the hope has been that he could get in a rhythm playing every game. On the aggregate, it's amazing what Iowa has done given that the only real contributions from the bench has been from Kriener. On the season, both Pemsl and Evelyn has effective FG% of less than 40, and both of their turnover rates are sky high (36% for Evelyn, and 28% for Pemsl). They are far and away the most turnover-prone players on the team. To Evelyn's credit, he's had a couple of games where he has been real good (Northwestern and Cincinnati) and he played 30 minutes against Maryland and managed to facilitate and limit turnovers to 3.

The injuries have made Pemsl a shell of what he was. Against certain opponents, limitations really jump out. Rutgers being one of them.

I totally agree that Kreiner has been the only true bench player they have been able to count on consistently. Like you said, Evelyn’s had some big game but has been inconstant, as has Touissant. Against really athletic teams like Rutgers, I think we will see Pemsl struggle but they will still need him to contribute minutes and hope for the best in those games.

How many points has he given away tonight in the first half. I was a huge fan of his back in his freshman here, but enough is enough. I feel sorry for the kid, but he just shouldn't be on the court right now.
I don't understand why Fran pulled Garza out for the last 2 minutes of the half for Pemsl.
I can't believe anyone would ask when the bench is three and you don't want your All-American picking up a cheap foul.

It's crazy how much better Kriener is in every facet. Better passer, defender, shooter, and post moves. If Pemsl was better at even one of these things, it might justify his occasional insertion. Instead, he is a walking turnover. His TO per minute played has to be one of the highest in the country. His footwork and passes are just sloppy as heck for someone practicing with D1 players for years.
Actually. He has a positive assist to turnover ratio and the lowest turnover per game average amongst the 8 players in the rotation. He is the only one to averages less than 1 turnover per game. Just sayin.

He makes mistakes in judgment, like trying to force post entries, but a large part of the issues for him are the physical limitations he now has with the accumulation of injuries.
Realistically, they have to count on him for at least a few minutes per game on average and sometimes 10+. He's giving his all with the tools he has remaining. I can live with that.

Just a little fun with numbers:

Pemsl's numbers in virtually every stat, except for points, are very similar to Kriener's on a per minute basis. One area that is glaring for Pemsl is the shooting percentage, especially since his shots are generally 5' on in. No argument that he's inefficient as an offensive presence. But, to say he does nothing but bad things on the court is completely false.

Rebounds
  • Pemsl .214; Kriener .240
Assists
  • Pemsl .110; Kriener .061
Steals
  • Pemsl .024; Kriener .021
Blocked Shots
  • Pemsl .024; Kriener .027
Turnovers
  • Pemsl .076; Kriener .082
Points
  • Pemsl .190; **Kriener .462**

You aren't watching the game close enough if you think he isn't being physical. He's had huge rebounds for us throughout this year. Bag on him all you want for his lack of athleticism and poor decisions with the ball but calling him soft is complete BS

Kind of funny some people here call him soft. If they had experienced half the injuries Pemsl has, they would have quit a long time ago. Now THAT would be soft.

I hear you OP! I cringe when he comes in. Unfortunately, with Nunge going down he has to play.
He had a bad game last night, but he’s had some descent games for us this year. It’s a grind in the Big this year and we are going to need him for 10 minutes a game. I just hope that he doesn’t kill us with his stupid turnovers when he’s in there.

Per-minute stats are good, but don't tell the whole story. Pemsl's turnover % is at 28, with Kriener and Toussaint the next-worst on the team at 23%. The difference is that Toussaint and Kriener actually make plays. Turnover % is not a raw number. It's a % of the total plays initiated by a player that end in a turnover. Kriener and Toussaint actually score baskets and get to the line, in addition to turning it over too.

Kriener has been unreal quite honestly in terms of taking shots he can make this year. 70% on 2-pointers (on 70 attempts) and 41% on 3's on 24 attempts. Pemsl is at 38% on 2-pointers, which for a post player is almost unheard of.

I do hope that it clicks in for Pemsl down the stretch, really Fran has no choice but to keep playing 8 guys. But teams are going to play him like Rutgers did, harass him and force him to try to do something with the ball.

How much of that is Rutger's style of defense vs keying in on Iowa's 8th player in the rotation? Pemsl had an off night, but I'll never understand the need some fans have of identifying a yearly scapegoat.

Oh, I'm not saying Pemsl is as good as Kriener or any of the others in the rotation. My point is that those who say he is 100% detrimental to the team are not actually correct. No doubt in my mind he's #8 in the 8 man rotation and if Nunge, P-Mac, even Bohannon, he'd be #10 or 11 on the team and not playing at all. The point is that he is a big body who can be used for 8-12 minutes simply to allow others to catch their breath without being useless.

It was interesting seeing Garza, Kriener, and Pemsl in at the same time last night ... even for a little bit. :)

My recommendation would be to grow up.

I think we all have to admit that last night was a bad night for him. He played 11 minutes with 2 TOs and a +/- of -13. That is by far the worst of the 8 that played.

He has had decent games too. Sometimes his high/low action with Garza or Kreiner work great. He does get overconfident in has passing ability after making one or two good ones. But we need him for 10 minutes a night because who else do we have?

Good passer?

A few good passes don’t negate twice as many bad passes.

Facts:

Pemsl averages more assists per minute than CJF, Weezy, BE, Kreiner and Garza
Pemsl has a higher A/TO ratio than Toussaint, Weezy, BE, Kreiner and Garza

While not fantastic, he averages 1.4 Assists per Game / .9 Turnovers Per Game - not bad for a forward

Would Penal be eligible for a medical hardship scholarship next year, like the football player with chronic back problems?

I’ve been critical of him, and some of his bone headed passes, turnovers.

But he’s going to be a key to a victory or two this season. Be it due to foul trouble, an injury or something...he’s going to have a few moments in a big spot or two.

At least I hope he does. He’s fought back from too many injuries, too much adversity not to.

We've got a short bench so Pemsl has to be part of the equation,.. Athletically, he's lost a lot but he's still brings experience and attitude to the floor,... We are going to need good minutes from him to be successful...
Garza can’t play 40 minutes, so Pemsl is needed.

This game, he did look lost. He kept losing track of his man on defense and when setting screens he allowed way too much space instead of getting up close to the man he was setting the screen for. I don't know if he was afraid of getting fouls or just wasn't thinking. He always makes some very nice passes, but follows that up with a turnover. Cordell is a great teammate and cheerleader from the bench, but parts of his game make him seem out of his league.
