We had the pleasure of having Tom Brands and Dan Gable on our podcast tonight at 2 Dogs Pub in Iowa City.

Great time talking wrestling and Grapple on the Gridiron with both Brands and Gable. Brands also talked about each weight class this season, so some interesting stuff for the fans here.

Here's a link to the podcast. Will also be up on hrpodcast.com in the morning, along with i-tunes and stitcher.

Really liked this interview with coach brands! Excellent job Tom.

A couple things:
-Loved how Brands talked about some of the young guys and logan ryan and some of the behind the scenes things
-Brands gave a lot of insight in his recruiting philosophy and made some comments about letting the programs out east know that we're not going anywhere. (I think in terms of wrestling and recruiting)
-Talked about the the trend of Juniors committing and how we had some, and the earlier commits. as well as how recruiting is completely different now compared to when he was being recruited back in the day.
-Said that if something doesn't work out between a potential kid its an agreement between the recruit and the coach. "I'll tell ya one thing, we're not gonna lose a recruit because of money." - Tom Brands.
-Talked about building relations with potential recruits club coaches or high school coaches.
-Talked about stalling and the rules, and the new rules for stalling with the potential problems they bring.

Also, Tom confirms more than 25k tickets have been sold.

And he confirms Bradley will return to Iowa this fall after completing his mission.

Only mentions Cooper at 157 and highlights Skyler and Paddock at 165.

And then there's Gable..."Putin isn't going to turn on the heat." This was said in reference to Grapple on the Gridiron and the weather concerns.

Good podcast overall, but I heard zero enthusiasm from Brands about Grothus at 141. He said, "We got a couple guys at 41," followed by a long discussion about Logan Ryan. TK had to specifically ask about Grothus. "Yeahhhhh...that's an opportunity for him and an option. Weight certifications are this week. We'll see what his numbers look like." He quickly added, "And you have Topher Carton. Kadel's also going down."

In other words, hardly a ringing endorsement.

Yes, he said he would be back from his mission in November.

Hopefully he only takes half a course load so he still has 5 full years left. That would put him 2 years behind Stoll. If he has a full course load, he only has 4 and is only 1 year behind Stoll.

He could go to Kirkwood in the spring and workout with the HWC. I have to imagine that is what he will do.

Yeah, that was my take too. My guess is Tom's not putting his eggs in that basket until he's making weight there Seemed pretty high on Ryan and the way he has handled his situation.

But wait there are people all over here saying that Grothus going to 41 is the best thing for the team and how it will make them so much tougher and how he can win it all. Could it be that everyone is way to excited about this and that maybe it's not what the coaches feel is the best move?

If Grothus makes 141 and is successful there, it is best for the team.

I have never heard any of the coaches say they don't feel its the best move-- I'm sure they hope and want Brody to win a national title at 141. With that said-- get down there and show us what you got stud!

My guess is, it's more of 'let's first worry about getting there, and certified first', at least that's the way I took it.

Me, too. It sounds like it may be close as to whether or not he gets certified and there is no reason getting overly excited about it until he does.

Are we sure this is true?

I liken Brands comments on Brody, or lack thereof, to coachspeak. He doesn't want to label Brody the savior of 141 this year when he hasn't certified yet and isn't even healthy at this point. Not putting all of his eggs in that basket, but I'm sure hes excited about the possibility.

Yeah, the Coaches think the best move is Grothus sitting on the bench behind Sorensen for his entire Senior Year. We really like to have solid depth, ya know, just in case, instead of proven starters out on the mat................
