This team was not nearly as talented as the the BJ, Marble and Horton teams. They made the Elite 8, one Sweet 16 and eliminated in the 2nd and 1st rounds in their 4 years. I would say this year's team overachieved in a lot of ways and Davis' teams may have underachieved their Jr and Sr year. If this group was more on par with the athleticism of 87-89 teams, they probably would have advances to the Elite 8 and possibly the Final 4.

If Fran ever decides to change his style of coaching and improves recruiting, then maybe Iowa can advance further. But until Iowa has elite or close to elite level guards, it won't happen. Even if you have the NPOY on your team, if your guards are not as athletic as the other team, you will not win at the level you want.

Yeah everyone needs to calm down. Yes this season is a disappointment the poll is dumb like everything else op does. But everyone saying there goes the last chance at the sweet 16 in my lifetime is just as dumb. Who knew what Garza was going to be when he was a freshman? No one saw that coming. Who's to say keegan won't blow his accomplishments out of the water? And we have another one of him maybe we have 2 that blow his accomplishments out of the water and we roll to a natty.

It's disappointing that Connor has been playing hurt, that CJ has been playing hurt and that Jack isn't playing at all.
Throw in Joe's ankle and yes it has been disappointing.

I’m one of the few that voted no. They went beginning-to-end ranked in the Top 5 and when everyone was healthy we were really tough to beat. Oregon was a tough matchup given our guards were a bit hobbled and not 100%. I know the game got away from us and maybe I’m stubborn but I would love to play the game again against Oregon tomorrow. Today they were hot from 3 and we weren’t, it easily could have went the other way.

In general I’m one of the few that kind of hates how a whole team and whole season is judged a success or failure based on one game, ignoring the 30 other games we had to judge whether it was a good team or not. Upsets happen so often in basketball and a one-and-done format makes it hard to judge. There’s a reason the NBA does best of 7 series.

but for the last 20/30 years the same old same old? There has been something like 89 teams around the country that have made the sweet 16 and shockingly Iowa hasn’t done squat ... there’s absolutely no excuse for this failure of a season... all the hype everything.. down the toilet. I do agree with the best of 7 though

Totally agree on that point. You would have thought eventually we would just get lucky and be the team that upsets a team that’s legitimately better than us. As you point out, most other teams eventually do it. I think a lot of fans were hoping to make up for 20 years of disappointment all at once with this team and it didn’t happen.

The question I have is “if they were hurt than why in gods name didn’t we start and play healthy guys?”

That’s crazy talk. Why start Murray, Perkins, and Tousiant when Fran can March out guys that are hurt and can’t defend. Be the coach Fran and stop worrying about feelings.

That’s why we need tougher dudes.

You think all of these other teams aren’t every bit as banged up as us??

The Weiskamps & Fredericks of the world aren’t the types of players that you need to go where we all want to go.

Both fine players. But we need some tough dudes like all of these other teams blended in with those type of players.

It’s painfully obvious.
