Back to school night at my kid's school, 7th grade. Private "Christian" School.

My wife attended with my 7th grader, and all the parents met in the English teacher's room, where he'd hung a flag like this one:

progress-pride-flag.jpg

My take is split:
My view against: How does this help the teacher teach 7th grade English better? How is it that I learned English without ever knowing the political or social views of my teachers.
This is unprofessional and inappropriate for the classroom. IMO there's no place for this, or maga flags, etc. In schools. The exception would be if a civics/social studies teacher had multiple flags of all sorts representing many viewpoints as fodder for discussion, etc.

My view for: My kid is going to be exposed to multiple viewpoints forever, and he needs to learn to work together with people of all kinds. Middle School is a reasonable time to start expanding those views understand things from multiple perspectives. This teacher is going to share things from a perspective he won't get at home, yet we'll have a chance to field those questions that arise from whatever influence/indoctrination this teacher tries (BTW the teacher isn't gay/trans/etc. He's a white male in his 40s married with boys the same age as mine. This is just virtue signaling).

What say you HBOT? Should I speak up to the school? Say anything? Or just kind of let it play out? What would YOU do?

Questions:

- How big/prominent is the flag and where exactly is it placed in the classroom? Is it large, dead center above the marker board? Or is it 3”x5” in a corner by the door?
- If this is a private-Christian school, what is the school’s policy?

I'm more with your view against. I do think it's important for kids to get exposed to multiple viewpoints but I don't necessarily think it's good to have a teacher to appear to endorse one viewpoint over another.

I'm as socially liberal as they come, but I don't agree with this. If you want to hang a pride flag someplace, hang it at your house. Not at your employer's workplace. I say that about any sort of "statement" flag as well. Back the blue, pride...really anything political should be done outside of the workplace.

What if the teacher put up a poster saying "No f*gs allowed" right next to it, that way kids got both viewpoints? Would you be cool with it then since neither side is getting endorsed.

Christ taught his followers to "go forth and SHOW love". I'd say this teacher get's Christ message and your kid has a very good teacher.

Agreed. If it is left to a teacher and their personal viewpoint as to what flag(s) they can fly in their classroom, then I assume everyone that supports this flag would also support any other flag that any other teacher may select. Keep your personal viewpoints personal IMO.

Politics has no place in school. The flag should be removed
Why does it have to be a political flag? It’s not like it is a Harris campaign poster. Very likely the teacher is letting the gay kids in the school know they have an ally. Apparently the school is a private Christian school. I imagine some gay kids might feel ostracised in that type of environment.

Oh the horror of a teacher who cares about those kids.

If it was a private school, I'd say a "statement flag" should be allowed if it doesn't fall outside of their own guidelines. Since private schools are now public schools in Ioway, I'd say the "statement flag" should be removed.

(I'm assuming you live in Ioway)

The viewpoints can be discussed without the flags or hate signs.

Fine. They can discuss LGTBQ+ rights right after they discuss how some people think puppies are good pets and how other people think that puppies should be burned alive. Just as long as the teacher treats both viewpoints as equal and doesn't endorse one or the other.

That's an excessive comparison. That flag also represents views such as hormone therapy for children and trans women playing women's sports.

Ummm..."love" doesn't mean "anything goes", in other words, people often confuse "love" with tolerance for anything...that isn't valid.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

New International Version

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Pretty simple shit here. You treat people with love. Love isn't a feeling, love is a verb. The Bible clearly teaches us that.

It is of sorts. A person being gay is a different life experience than a straight person.

The flag also represents some political goals.
It is not a viewpoint anymore than being straight is. Gay people had to put up with straight people wearing wedding rings and showing PDA for generations. If ours is, then yours is, too.

You said teachers shouldn't endorse one viewpoint over another so I was just finding that line. Apparently you do think some viewpoints should be endorsed over others.

Also I'm aware the flag represents LGBTQ rights including medical freedom and inclusion in sports.

Being gay isn't a viewpoint.
It's a mental disease though. Much less of a mental illness than trans though. Since when did the gheys have to get lumped in with the trans people. I've spoke to a few gheys who don't really like that team trans has been placed on their bench.

I'm not opposed to a gay teacher wearing wedding rings and having pictures of him and his spouse on his desk. PDA's in schools are another thing but it's sort of the same thing for straight couples as well.

The flag has a lot more meaning than just that though.

Whoa! Wait until you find out what else Paul had to say about this!

If being gay is a mental disease so is being straight. Only a mentally deranged person would see a vagina and think, "Hey, I wanna stick my penis in that until it shoots, I go soft, and then I roll over to go to sleep." That's serial killer stuff.
