Projected B1G Seeds

Here is what I posted on BWI with a couple additions for Iowa wrestlers.

Now that the Big 10 regular season is over, the information needed for seeding is in the books. While we await ROAR's unparalleled annual write-up of seeds, I thought I'd provide my early guesses on where PSU will be seeded at Big 10s along with the top 4 at each weight. This is based primarily on record in conference duals.

125 -- Ramos, Barnett, Ayala, B.Davis -- Ayala, Davis and DeAugustino all have 2 conference dual losses and each went 1-1 in the grouping. Ayala's other loss is to Ramos while Davis and DeAugustino lost to Smith. Ayala didn't wrestle Barnett when he had the chance so you could rearrange the circle. Caleb Smith has 3 losses but is 2-1 (plus a MF over DeAugustino) against this grouping.

133 -- Van Dee, Ragusin, Shawver, Bouzakis -- Nagao 8 but possibly up to 6th. This weight will test the seeding "rules" of the Big 10 of which there are none. Both Van Dee and Ragusin have 1 dual loss. Van Dee beat Ragusin. However, Van Dee also lost to Teske at the Soldier Salute (although he beat him at the dual). Nagao is 3-3 with losses to 2-4 and best win Schriever (9). Madrigal is 6-2 with wins over Van Dee and Wells, Wells is 5-2 with a win over Shawver and Brown is 5-3 with a win over Wells. Schriever - 9. Teske no idea.

141 -- Bartlett, Mendez, Woods, Hardy, Lemley -- 3-5 all have two losses in conference (a round robin) -- Hardy lost to Mendez at CKLV, Lemley did not wrestle the OSU dual due to a failed skin check and Woods didn't face Mendez.

149 -- Lovett, Gomez, Rathjen, Kasak, Miller -- Kasak could be 4 through 6 as he like Miller and Zargo have 2 losses. He only had 3 dual wins in conference. He has the best wins of the three of them.

157 -- Haines, Blockhus, Saldate, Franek or B.Lee -- Both Haines and Blockhus are undefeated. Both beat Franek and Robb. Haines also beat Saldate and Lewan while Blockhus beat Blaze and Chumbley. Interetsing call at 7-8. Robb is 2-4 with 2 wins over Lewan who is 3-3. You could make an argument for Franek or Lee at 3 since Saldate doesn's have any great wins.

165 -- Hamiti, Mesenbrink, Caliendo, Fish -- Hamiti and Mesenbrink both undefeated. Both beat Caliendo, Fish, Taylor, Hepner.

174 -- Starocci, Griffith, Kennedy, Ruth -- Starocci and Griffith undefeated. Starocci did not wrestle the Michigan dual so could be punished. Similar wins -- Kennedy, Welsh and Wilson. Ruth is 7-1 with loss to Kennedy but did not face Hamiti or Starocci. Kennedy is 6-2 only losing to top 2.

184 -- Salazar, Pinto, Truax, Rogotzke -- Rogotzke could move to 3 based on win over Truax. Truax is 5-2 while Rogotzke is 3-1. Riggins - 10.

197 -- Brooks, J.Smith, Glazier, Allred -- Smith/Glazier could go either way.

285 -- Kerkvliet, Feldman, Davison, Tabor. Hill anywhere from 5-9.

14. Hampton, Michigan St 0-7. Could flip with Adams.
Teske looked like a man on a mission Sunday. Aggressive from neutral and on top. Best he has looked all year (made an ok freshmen look completely dominated). Did Schriever actually take the spot or was Teske banged up and they limited his matches? He looked good even wrestling up for Real a couple weekends ago. I would love to see that version of Teske against Fix.

How many spots allocated at 133? If we wrestle to seed (#9), do we stay home?

174

1. Starocci, Penn St 5-0. You could technically put Griffith here since Starocci did not go against Michigan but Starocci is a 3 time champ and on a 60 something match winning streak. That’s probably not supposed to matter but it should.

2. Griffith, Michigan 6-0. See above.

3. Kennedy, Iowa 6-2. Beat Ruth head to head and only losses are to Starocci and Griffith who Ruth didn’t face.

4. Ruth, Illinois 7-1. See above.

5. Welsh, Ohio St 5-3. Losses are to Starocci, Griffith and Ruth. Beat Maylor and Turley so gets the higher seed even with a worse record.

6. Turley, Rutgers 6-2. Losses to Welsh and Griffith. Maylor’s losses are to Welsh and Ruth. Both beat Baumann, Sparks and Shannon. Turley beat Washington which is a better win than Maylor has. Also, Maylor didn’t go against Kennedy which he most likely loses.

7. Maylor, Wisconsin 5-2. See above.

8. Sparks, Minnesota 3-3. Losses to Maylor, Turley and Ruth. Wins over Baumann, Solis and Martin which are the exact same as Washington from Indiana. Washington lost to DJ Shannon who is 1-7 and lost to Michigan back up Walker. Advantage Sparks.

9. Washington, Indiana 3-3. See above.

10. Baumann, Purdue 2-6. Beat Wilson.

11. Wilson, Nebraska 2-6. Loss to Baumann.

12. Solis, Maryland 2-4. No significant results. Sat out against Starocci and Griffith.

13. Shannon, Michigan St 1-7.

14. Mielnik, Maryland 0-8.

197

1. Brooks, Penn St 8-0.

2. Glazier, Iowa 7-1. Gave him the nod over Smith since Smith sat against Minnesota and Glazier beat Joles. Also Glazier has best wins over Allred and Joles.

3. Smith, Maryland 6-1. See above.

4. Allred, Nebraska 6-2. Losses to Brooks and Glazier. Beat Joles and Bates. Head to head over Joles and Geog sat against Smith of Maryland.

7. Nevills, Maryland 2-1. Beat Slavikouski. Lost to Willham.

10. Jessen, Northwestern 3-4. Lost to Hutmacher.

11. Terrill, Michigan St 2-6. Beat Rosenfeld.

11. Desantis, Rutgers 2-4. Next best record.

12. North, Maryland 1-7. Beat Chumbley. Better win than Roberts.

13. Roberts, Illinois 1-4.

14. Mechler, Wisconsin 0-6.
Hope somebody challenges Haines at B10s or NCAAs. The kid is tough! Franek has to gain confidence in his offense against the top level guys. He's got the goods...just needs to put them on display before desperation time.

165 toss up for 1 seed between Mesenbrink and Hamiti.

1. Hamiti, Wisconsin 8-0. Both beat Caliendo, Taylor, Hepner and Fish. Mesenbrink beat Amine and Hamiti beat Buell. Better win for Hamiti based on this years results.

2. Mesenbrink, Penn St 8-0. See above. Wouldn’t be shocked if they flipped. Splitting hairs.

3. Caliendo, Iowa 6-2. Only losses to the top 2. Better wins than Fish. Beat Taylor, Buell and Brenner. Fish beat Amine.

4. Fish, Michigan St 6-2. See above.

5. Taylor, Nebraska 5-3. Losses to the top 3 only. Beat Buell, Amine and Brenner.

6. Buell, Purdue 5-3. Losses to Hamiti, Caliendo and Taylor. Beat Brenner.

7. Hepner, Ohio St 5-2. Losses to Mesenbrink and Hamiti. No good wins but Amine didn’t go against him so gave him the nod. Could flip with Buell. Toss up.

8. Amine, Michigan 3-3. Losses to Mesenbrink, Taylor and Fish. Beat 3 back ups and sat against Caliendo and Hepner.

9. Brenner, Minnesota 4-4. Losses to Hamiti, Caliendo, Buell and Taylor. No good wins. Gave the nod over Lillard based on level of competition.

10. Lillard, Indiana 3-2. See above.

11. Moore, Illinois 1-7. Beat Mayfield head to head.

12. Mayfield, Northwestern 1-5. Lost to Moore.

13. White, Rutgers 1-5. Beat Rodriguez and better record.

14. Rodriguez, Maryland 0-6.
I think Hamiti will get the nod based on rankings but Mesenbrink looks to be the best of the group based on the limited matches I've seen. I think Caliendo can give him a much better match the next time they meet if Cal gets on his offense. He does not have top tier TD defense in my humble opinion and looked to move in slow motion when Mes shot on him. Mes was dancing around like Ali, and when he jabbed, if you will, Cal had nothing for him. Going forward Cal needs to be the one dancing and jabbing.

14. Martin, Northwestern 0-3. He has wrestled the last 3 duals. Ferrante is 0-5 so either way they are the bottom seed.
Would love to see Lewis or Griffith take out Star at NCAAs, but Star just seems to have their number...along with everyone elses. Hope one of them gets the 4 seed so Star has to beat them both to win NCAAs. Any way Vito Arujau can wrestle at 74? LOL! :)

1. Salazar, Minnesota 7-0.

2. Pinto, Nebraska 7-1. Lost to Salazar.

3. Ryder Rogotzke, Ohio St 3-1. Beat Truax, Bullock and Malczewski.

4. Truax, Penn St 5-2. Lost to Pinto and Ryder Rogotzke. Beat Bullock and Malczewski.

5. Bullock, Michigan 4-3. Losses to Truax, Pinto and Ryder Rogotzke. Beat Soldano and Malczewski.

6. Malczewski, Michigan St 5-3. Losses to Truax, Bullock and Ryder Rogotzke. Beat Liegel and Soldano.

7. Soldano, Rutgers 4-3. Losses to Bullock, Malczewski and Minnesota back up McEnelly. Beat Ryder Rogotzke.

8. Shane Liegel, Wisconsin 4-3. Losses to Pinto, Malczewski, and Gabe Arnold. Beat Fisher.

9. Fisher, Northwestern 3-4. Beat Roman Rogotzke.

10. Roman Rogotzke, Indiana 3-5. Lost to Troy Fisher.

11. Connell, Illinois 2-5. Beat Rowley and Riggins.

12. Rowley, Purdue 2-6. Beat Riggins.

13. Riggins, Iowa 2-5.

14. Mielnik, Maryland 0-8.
Would love to see Riggins suprise the field and finish in the top 7. I know his chances aren't good but would like to see him rewarded for the outstanding effort he put forth this year!

Even multiple matches against the same opponent? Like Ayala beat McKee twice so he gets credit for 2 wins?
not exactly sure what you mean by 'credit'

it's not a formula; it's a vote based on head to heads of conference opponents.

the Ramos win counts for Caleb Smith and there's zero chance Smith is seeded behind McCrone.

141 is pretty straight forward. 3-5 is a little tricky but Lemley gets the nod for most wins since they each went 1-1 against each other. W

1. Bartlett, Penn St 8-0

2. Mendez, Ohio St 7-1

3. Lemley, Michigan 5-2. Lost to Bartlett and Hardy. Beat Woods.

4. Woods, Iowa 4-2. Lost to Bartlett and Lemley. Beat Hardy so after putting Lemley 3, he wins head to head over Hardy.

5. Hardy, Nebraska 4-2. Lost to Bartlett and Woods. Beat Lemley.

6. Pucino, Illinois 5-2. Lost to Mendez and Hardy. Best win is Vombaur.

7. Fongaro, Indiana 4-4. Lost to Bartlett, Mendez, Lemley and Miller. Gave him nod over Vombaur due to stronger opponents.

8. Vombaur, Minnesota 4-4. Lost to Woods, Hardy, Moore and Pucino. Could put him 7 over Fongaro if you use common opponent Miller from Maryland. Vombaur beat him and Fongaro lost to him.

9. Hamdan, Michigan St 3-5. Beat Moore head to head.

10. Moore, Rutgers 2-3. See above. Beat Miller head to head.

11. Miller, Maryland 2-5. Next best record.

12. White, Purdue 2-3. Beat Wisconsin’s back up Fugitt and McLain from Northwestern who hasn’t won a Big 10 match

13. McLain, Northwestern 0-7.

14. Lettini, Wisconsin 0-5. Could flip with McLain.
My guess is Real is the 3 seed. He’s the returning big ten champ and is ranked 2nd nationally. I think that matters in the coaches minds and puts him on the top of the 3-way. Same reason Hamiti will be 1 and Mesenbrink 2. Hamiti won big tens last year and is ranked higher nationally.

I don’t know how you seed him higher than Lemley when Lemley beat him by major decision. But we will see.

I do to. The question is where will he be seeded? He could be a tough first round matchup for somebody with a high seed.
I could see him as high as 7 and as low as 9. He did split with Van Dee. But a big 10 dual win would override a tournament win

If those seeds told true, we could potentially be looking at first round bonus points at eight weight classes.
