Pryce Sandfort Highlights & Updates. Iowa's Mr. Basketball

I’m very excited about Pryce, but I wonder how he will fit in for playing time next year. Hopefully he’s a little quicker than Payton and can defend the 2, otherwise I see him in a bit of a log jam playing behind PMac and Payton if he is strictly a 3. I remember Fran commenting once about seeing him as a 1, but i have a hard time seeing him being quick enough to defend a 1.

He is a little bit shorter and quicker version of Payton. I’ve watched him play many times, very good shooter, really high basketball IQ, and can bring the ball up the floor if he needs. He will probably play a lot of the three when in, as our front court will need Payton and Pat at the four. Perkins, dix, ulis and Bowen will man the guard spots. A transfer center is a must need.

Payton is probably going to have to play the 4 next year since Patrick can't.

They can't share a spot next year.

With Tony, Ulis, Dix, Bowen and Harding the guard spots are full.

Gotta make it to next season before we know if the guard spots are full. Christian Williams transferred out in August if memory serves me correctly, but most of the portal action is right after Iowa gets eliminated from NCAA tourney. Dix will stick around because he is Iowa kid and got a lot of PT. Ulis will stick around because he won't find a better situation elsewhere and he probably is happy at Iowa. Perkins can be retained with some NIL money........ Bowen---I would be surprised but very happy if he sticks around.

Fran will ask Sandfort to bulk up to be able to defend the opponent PF. PMAC isn't required to be able to defend the anyone in the paint. Of course Fran could go back and zone a lot more. Not like defense improved this year while playing mostly Man.

In Thursday's semi final game vs Waukee, Pryce had 3 fouls called on him in the FIRST QUARTER. He obviously didn't play in the 2nd quarter with 3 fouls. #3 Waukee Northwest beat #2 Waukee 66-46. Cade Kelderman had 26 points and 5 assists. Grant Tigges had 12 points; Pryce and Andrew Cose each finished with 10 points.

Fran was in attendance for last night's championship game between Waukee Northwest and West Des Moines Valley. Pryce finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds as Waukee NW fell 75-67.

I'm really warming up to the idea of Payton bulking up and playing the 4 spot the more I think about it. He has the height and looks like the frame to amass some muscle. That will address a few key needs...

1. An experienced, very effective shooter, stretch 4 in Payton
2. Allows Freeman and Ladij to gain valuable experience while brought along at the appropriate pace
3. Frees up the logjam at the 3 and will give Pryce a lot more PT which by all accounts is a great player
4. Payton at the 4 vs 3 improves our defense as he's not quite quick enough to defend the 3
5. Enables IA to focus on the 5 spot - and hopefully 1 spot - in the transfer portal.

All good points. But I have my doubts that Payton can add the muscle needed for the 4. Hoping that Mulvey can make huge strides for next year.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. I wouldn’t want him to add more than 10-15 pounds, but I think he can definitely bull up some without losing quickness. He has a nice feel around the basket. If he starts posting up more it’s only going to open up the 3 for him.

Bulking up and Iowa basketball don’t really go together; our teams always look under muscled vs other D1 teams

I just don't see how we can play both Patrick and Payton in the same lineup for long stretches.

As bad as we are defensively, they might be our two worst defenders. Teams would routinely use ball screens to switch Payton onto guards who would then absolutely abuse him. Patrick, on the other hand, just doesn't know where he's at sometimes.

That's a good consideration and I certainly agree with your point on Patrick. Something for the staff to assess.

Its Fran, there are no combinations that are too bad defensively for him.

Waukee Northwest loses in state final to champion Valley of West Des Moines which plays four sophomores in key roles.

Don't forget we have a pretty quick guard coming in from Moline. He's a player for sure and I've seen both play hard defensively. Hopefully it translates to college. Pryce has nice ball skills and is quicker imo than Peyton. But Peyton is a proven player with ice in his veins. Hopefully pryce hss the same competitive drive.
