at IU. They are really good. Edey is hard to stop. They beat the Hawks also but we had no answer for him.

If I were coaching against Edey, I would be trying to get the ball to Freeman early and often and have him take it right at him. Might not work, but get a couple of foul calls, and it can change the game...

Good, I hope they crush them - worst thing that happened was Purdue losing to northwestern right before we played them! Would rather have Purdue fat and happy before coming to Iowa city Saturday.
We played at Purdue after they lost to NW... they should be fat and happy coming to IC on saturday.

Refs really give Edey the benefit of a doubt a lot of the time because of his size. At least from the games I’ve watched, it’s damn near impossible to foul him out

If he wasn't a former Knight player, he'd likely be gone after this year. But former players always get a little bit of leeway with administrations.
Another year or two before it gets hot for him. He has a solid coaching career, but he's prickly. I don't think he'll create a lot of goodwill for himself as coach. And, he's fairly old. It will be fairly easy for them to cut ties. IU has churned through a lot of coaches.

Hoiberg's strategy against Edey was pretty good. I think he was playing zone and then telling the farthest defender from the ball to come off and keep Edey doubled to deny entry passes and post moves. This resulted in a lot of open 3s for Purdue, but they mostly missed them. Then on the other end, Nebraska shoots lots of 3s and made more. They were swarming Edey all game like a bunch of wasps. Not sure we have the team speed make such a strat work ourselves.

And knowing Iowa's luck, Purdue would be hitting those 3's and not missing them.

Edey has 30. Also 10.10 from the line and 11 boards.

Dude is gonna be a problem for the Hawks.
Rotate Brauns and Dembele on him most of the game, hack-a-shaq style.

Use Freeman and Krikke to pressure offensively and try to get him in early foul trouble.

Hopefully Perk and Payton both o off this game

Get the W here and it will go a long way to getting an invite in March.

This is the corruptness of college referees. There is a different whistle for stars and upperclassmen.

Eddey used to be a foul magnet his first two years when he was a nobody. Last year when he became a star, all the calls go his way. I remember Keegan getting a lot of clean blocks/steals his Freshman year and getting the foul called on him because he was a nobody. The next year he was nearly player of the year and he got an entirely different whistle.

"Hack-a-shaq" worked because Shaquille O"Neal was a 50% free throw shooter.

Edey is close to 80%.
I should have elaborated a bit on that, I meant only in the sense it wears him down having guys hanging and banging with him for 30 mins. He won't be nearly as effective with 10 mins to go in the game.

I don't think hacking Eddey will work. The last time we played Eddey was 9/10 from the field and 7/9 from FT line. You can no longer intentionally foul in college game---it becomes a flagrant. Any time Eddey got the ball last time, it was a FG or 2 free throws or FG and 1 ..If anything, just concede the basket if Eddey is in position. He only played 24 min last time...being tired wasn't an issue.

The best strategy is to try to keep Eddey from getting the Ball in 1st place and try to keep him off the boards. Whatever Fairleigh Dickinson did to Purdue in NCAA tourney---thats what I want.

Guarding Edey man-to-man is not going to work. A zone might help deny the ball, but depends on their shooters to be off. I like pressing in spurts, but that is not likely to work for long stretches. I still like the idea of taking the ball at him on offense early, and see if we can get some foul calls. He is a mismatch for everyone, but Iowa' interior defense is worse than most.

Pretty sure that was hanging and banging....wearing him down.

Again, making him exert maximum effort on both ends all game long.

Doing what Fran typically does, which isn't much on defense and offensively not really taking it directly at Edey, is not going to get it done.
