I rented a vehicle this pas week with one of these. Awkward, annoying and just a pain in the ass generally.

What is the point or the purpose?

I had a high school buddy whose old man had an old Chrysler (?) with push buttons for shifting. Thinking back on it, I don’t understand the way it worked.
There were no electronics used back then, but rather mechanical shifting.

Drove an old push button Chrysler in high school. I'd drive down the street and shove in the reverse button just to listen to the godawful noise it made.

Wife’s car has the buttons, mine does not. Always an adventure when switching from one car to the other. However, the push button sure came in handy when some crackhead tried to steal my car a couple years ago. He couldn’t figure out how to put the car in reverse but sure as hell had the turn signals and windshield wipers going by the time I chased him off.

My Palisade has a push button shifter. This being electronic instead of mechanical in nature frees up space, things aren't in the way of the shifter. It also frees up space under the shifter area for storage. Electronic components designed to last typically are very reliable.

It also adds additional built in safety functions when you think at a system level.
Example: If driving forward, do not allow the user to shift to park unless the following are met: brake is depressed and speed <.5 mph.
This can all be controlled with software.

i actually want to know the point or purpose of putting automatic shifters between the front seats. buicks in 90s had the shifter under steering and the nice sofa in front made driving with lady companions so much more comfortable

This is pretty much the reason(s). If the transmission is not mechanically shifted, why have an actual "analog" shifter?

I'd also ask whether the push buttoned vehicle has a CVT for a transmission - if so that may be a reason why an old school shifter setup is not needed.

Time, and technology, marches on. Another thing that is going the way of the dodo is a good ol' fashioned stick shifted manual. Those are getting exceedingly rare any more.

My dodge has paddle shifters but they're more for idiots like me to have fun with and not mess the car up too badly

Push buttons, oddly gated automatics, column shifting automatics, traditional center shifting automatics, paddle shifters....I've had them all. I will always have at least one manual in my garage though. Right now it's my Taco.

It’s to clear up space in the center console so us Americans can fit our big ass Stanley cups in the cup holders and have wireless charging for phones and giant compartments for our family size bag of chips
